Jacob Artved Quartet feat. Louis Hayes • Live at Jazzhus Montmartre

 

 Jacob Artved is the youngest of a very talented new generation of Danish jazz guitar players. At the age of 20 he has already been a working musician for years, being introduced on the scene by Danish guitar legend Jacob Fischer at the age of 15. He was admitted to the Royal Academy of Music as the youngest student ever, but chose to drop out, move to New York and spent the long nights jamming instead.
 
On this live-recording from the legendary Jazz club Montmartre in Copenhagen he is featured by one of the greatest drummers of all time, Mr. Louis Hayes. Commenting on the experience, Jacob says: “To play this music with someone you feel so much admiration for can almost be an intimidating experience and, in some cases, make you hold back your creativity in utter respect and fear of doing something wrong. This feeling is something that I think most young musicians, including myself, have experienced at some point in their career. Of course, those situations are what make you stronger, practice more, and think even harder! Although sometimes you’re lucky enough to find someone that you admire and feel all the same respect for, yet don’t feel the big gap between you in age difference, experience, mindset and accomplishments.”
 
In a very special way Hayes is the connection back to the most legendary period of jazz when he in 1962 sat behind the drums backing Bud Powell and Nat & Julian “Cannonball” Adderly. The creators of Bebop and modern jazz. It is great to see that in the year 2020 this is still relevant to the youngest of talents in the business. On this release, Jacob Artved bridges multiple generations and shows us why this artform is more alive than ever.
 
Elaborating on the subject, Artved says: “You just seem to have a common understanding of how to express yourself both musically and personally. This is what I felt when meeting these three extraordinary men - David Wong, Jeb Patton and a personal hero of mine, Louis Hayes, whose music I’ve been listening to all my life. I sincerely hope that this shines through the music we play and in the selections of tunes that I have picked out. Enjoy!”
 
The album was recorded during three sold out shows during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2019. The opening track, the upbeat Exodus, is a track that showcases both the albums bebop roots as well as Artved’s signature cut-through guitar tone. Exodus has plenty of space to showcase both Hayes as well as pianist Jep Patton. On track three, the ballad Nelia, Artved showcase a more sensitive side written for his girlfriend of the same name – Fittingly she’s one of the best young drummers in jazz.
 
All in all, the album has loads of live energy while retaining a crystal clear sound field. The instrumentalists are some of the best on.

It is always a joy when a young musician decides to focus on passing on a strong jazz-tradition. Guitarist Jacob Artved lives in the tradition, but has definitely obtained inspirations from guitar players of today. His playing is skilled and honest, and he has a fine career ahead of him. These three days Artved is heard with no other than a legend; the American drummer Louis Hayes, whose strong playing was the driving force in groups led by Cannonball Adderley, Horace Silver and Woody Shaw. What a scoop! The group is completed by two incredible musicians from NYC; pianist Jeb Patton and bassist David Wong.

 Jacob Artved es el más joven de una nueva generación de guitarristas de jazz daneses de gran talento. A sus 20 años ya es un músico en activo, introducido en la escena por la leyenda de la guitarra danesa Jacob Fischer a los 15. Fue admitido en la Real Academia de Música como el estudiante más joven de la historia, pero optó por abandonar los estudios, trasladarse a Nueva York y pasar las largas noches improvisando.
 
En esta grabación en directo desde el legendario club de jazz Montmartre de Copenhague cuenta con la colaboración de uno de los mejores bateristas de todos los tiempos, el Sr. Louis Hayes. Comentando la experiencia, Jacob dice: "Tocar esta música con alguien por quien sientes tanta admiración puede ser casi una experiencia intimidante y, en algunos casos, hacer que retengas tu creatividad por absoluto respeto y miedo a hacer algo mal. Esta sensación es algo que creo que la mayoría de los músicos jóvenes, incluido yo mismo, han experimentado en algún momento de su carrera. Por supuesto, esas situaciones son las que te hacen ser más fuerte, practicar más y pensar aún más. Aunque a veces tienes la suerte de encontrar a alguien a quien admiras y por quien sientes el mismo respeto, pero sin sentir la gran brecha que os separa en cuanto a diferencia de edad, experiencia, mentalidad y logros".
 
De una manera muy especial, Hayes es la conexión con el periodo más legendario del jazz, cuando en 1962 se sentó detrás de la batería respaldando a Bud Powell y Nat & Julian "Cannonball" Adderly. Los creadores del Bebop y del jazz moderno. Es estupendo ver que en el año 2020 esto sigue siendo relevante para los talentos más jóvenes del negocio. En este lanzamiento, Jacob Artved tiende un puente entre varias generaciones y nos muestra por qué esta forma de arte está más viva que nunca.
 
Al profundizar en el tema, Artved afirma: "Parece que tienen un entendimiento común de cómo expresarse tanto musical como personalmente. Esto es lo que sentí al conocer a estos tres extraordinarios hombres: David Wong, Jeb Patton y un héroe personal mío, Louis Hayes, cuya música he escuchado toda mi vida. Espero sinceramente que esto brille a través de la música que tocamos y en las selecciones de melodías que he escogido. Que lo disfruten".
 
El álbum se grabó durante tres espectáculos con las entradas agotadas durante el Festival de Jazz de Copenhague 2019. El tema de apertura, el optimista Exodus, es una pista que muestra tanto las raíces bebop del álbum como el tono de guitarra de corte característico de Artved. Exodus tiene mucho espacio para mostrar tanto a Hayes como al pianista Jep Patton. En la tercera pista, la balada Nelia, Artved muestra un lado más sensible escrito para su novia del mismo nombre - apropiadamente ella es una de las mejores bateristas jóvenes del jazz.
 
En general, el álbum tiene mucha energía en directo, pero conserva un campo sonoro cristalino. Los instrumentistas son de los mejores.
