The first of several tribute albums issued just after Antonio Carlos Jobim's death, this one generally sticks to his most famous songs as interpreted by several Brazilian and American artists from PolyGram's archives. Jobim himself appears on such obvious choices as the best-selling Stan Getz, João Gilberto, and Astrud Gilberto hit "The Girl from Ipanema," and with Astrud on "Agua de Beber" and "Dindi," and again with Elis Regina on an "Aguas de Marco" that nearly breaks up with laughter. The American contributions are a mixed bag; Sarah Vaughan's "Corcovado," for example, is rather inappropriately overwrought but Wes Montgomery's "Insensatez" is a beautiful recording, with Jobim's favored arranger, Claus Ogerman, in top wistful form. The other jazzers on the CD are Billy Eckstine, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Shirley Horn, and Dizzy Gillespie, proving that Jobim's timelessly aching music attracted quite a diverse cross-section of admirers.

Drawing on original documents, interviews, and new information, Nicholson draws a complete picture of Fitzgerald's professional and personal life. Fitzgerald rose from being a pop singer with chart-novelty hits in the late '30s to become a bandleader and then one of the greatest interpreters of American popular song. Along with Billie Holiday, she virtually defined the female voice in jazz, and countless others followed in her wake and acknowledged her enormous influence.

Parker's 1949 appearance at Norman Granz's annual Jazz at the
Philharmonic concert is less legendary than his 1946 debut there, but
listening to this magnificently remastered 68-minute document of his
set, it's nearly impossible to understand why. Surrounded by an
astonishing group of sidemen, including Ella Fitzgerald, Roy Eldridge,
Hank Jones, and Buddy Rich, Parker is at the top of his form throughout.
Even when he's trading choruses with his foremost influence, tenor
Lester Young, on Young's signature piece "Lester Leaps In," Parker's
passionate, powerful alto pretty much blows Young off the stage.
Elsewhere, Parker plays around with standards, transforming "Perdido,"
"How High the Moon?" and "Embraceable You" from well-worn set pieces to
exciting and innovative bop showcases. JAZZ AT THE PHILHARMONIC 1949 is a
breathtaking example of live jazz at its most transcendent.
