Johnny 'Hammond' Smith • Storm Warning

Biography
Actually nicknamed after his instrument, Johnny "Hammond" Smith was perhaps one of the more underrated soul-jazz organists of the style's heyday. Born John Robert Smith in Louisville, KY, on December 16, 1933, Smith began learning piano as a child, idolizing Bud Powell and Art Tatum early on. After moving to Cleveland, Smith heard jazz organ pioneer Wild Bill Davis and decided to switch instruments; he made his professional debut on the organ in 1958, around the same time he was working as an accompanist for vocalist Nancy Wilson. In 1959, he began recording as a leader for Prestige, an association that would last through 1970 and produce highlights like That Good Feelin', Talk That Talk, Black Coffee, Open House, Ebb Tide, and Soul Talk, among others. As time passed, Smith's style got progressively funkier, and in 1971, he shortened his name to Johnny Hammond and moved to producer Creed Taylor's CTI label family. Hammond recorded five jazz-funk albums over the next three years, including Breakout, Wild Horses/Rock Steady, and the Mizell Brothers-helmed Gambler's Life. In 1975, Hammond moved to Milestone and recorded the culmination of his move into jazz-funk, Gears, another collaboration with the Mizell Brothers that was reviled by purists and canonized by acid jazz fans. After a few more sessions for Milestone, Smith largely retired from jazz, settling in Southern California and investing in real estate. He began recording sporadically again in the '90s, but was stricken with cancer and died on June 4, 1997. ~ Steve Huey

~ Steve Huey

Larry Coryell, Badi Assad & John Abercrombie • Three Guitars

Review
by Ken Dryden
It's rare for three guitarists of this caliber to be assembled for a recording date. John Abercrombie claimed that he hadn't touched his acoustic guitar for three years prior to receiving an invitation to make this recording, though he was obviously ready when the tape rolled. Larry Coryell has made a number of acoustic recordings prior to this disc. Badi Assad's three previous CDs for Chesky have all merited high praise.

Assad contributed five compositions to the session, though the stunning opener, "Seu Jorge e Dona Ica," is hard to beat. She initially accompanies her fellow guitarists on a percussive instrument called a kalimba, which sounds like it originates from Africa. This six-minute work has several distinctive sections, including a bit of her mouth percussion. Her "After the Rain" showcases the intricate interplay between the three guitarists. The moody, march-like "Metamorphosis" also proves compelling, while her switch to copper flute with an interspersing vocal transforms the piece into borderline avant-garde.

Assad's body percussion introduces Abercrombie's challenging "Descending Grace," a piece full of surprising twists. His "Ralph's Piano Waltz" is every bit as difficult, but the players seem to tackle it effortlessly.

Coryell also brought several of his pieces to the sessions. "New Lute Prelude" was inspired by the late Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida, it serves as a brief introduction to the much more laid-back "New Lute Interlude." He also composed two duets to play with Assad. The wild "No Flight Tonight" features her vocals and incredible mouth and body percussion as the sole accompaniment for Coryell. They also walk a musical tightrope together in his "Exercise in Fourths" without any slips. Highly recommended.

Royce Campbell • 6 x 6

Review by Michael P. Gladstone (All About Jazz):
These sessions appeared on Campbell's own Paddlewheel Records, which was a subsidiary of the Japanese King label. They were released in the United States on Evidence. At that time, Royce Campbell was approached regarding a new project that would team the guitarist with five leading jazz plectrists of his choice. The resulting album, 6 X 6, featuring Campbell in performance with John Abercrombie, Larry Coryell, Pat Martino, Bucky Pizzarelli and Dave Stryker, was released in 1994 in Japan and later in Europe to critical praise. One decade later, the album is finally being made available in the US, retitled Six By Six. Each of the guest guitarists is given two tracks apiece with, essentially, their own bassist and drummer, and Royce Campbell is the second guitarist on each of the selections, providing rhythm and the opportunity to trade fours with the respective players.

Gil Evans • Plays The Music Of Jimi Hendrix

Gil Evans was a huge admirer of the music of Jimi Hendrix – so much so, in fact, that he resolved to collaborate with the guitarist on projects. A meeting between the two had been arranged for September 1970 but Hendrix overdosed just before his trip to New York and with that impetus obviously faltered. Four years later, however, Evans returned to Hendrix’s music to record a tribute album with a 19-man orchestra. He presented the music at a Carnegie Hall concert, part of the New York Jazz Repertory Company’s programming for that year, and took it into the RCA studios the following day.

The band included such heavyweights as guitarist John Abercrombie, trumpeter Marvin Peterson and saxophonists David Sanborn and Billy Harper. The orchestrations involve a wide range of instrumentation but of the nine songs, only two are definitively Evans’ arrangements.

John Abercrombie & Ralph Towner • Sargasso Sea

Review by Michael G. Nastos
John Abercrombie and Ralph Towner have forever been tied to the ECM roster as leaders and individualists, and initially it was hard to imagine their styles being compatible. As an amplified electric guitarist, Abercrombie's steely, sometime unearthly sound was an uneven puzzle piece alongside the graphic, stoic, classically oriented style of Towner. Yet on Sargasso Sea, there are several instances where they merge together as one, feeling their way through pure improvisations, angular and colorful motifs, or thematic nuances and a certain strata of consciousness that makes a world of common sense. There are selections where they both play acoustic guitars, but it is mostly Abercrombie's hopped up sound through an amp over Towner's bold and beautiful unplugged instrument, tossing in a piano overdubbed on two tracks. Where selections such as "Fable" are folksy and far from overwrought, "Avenue" lopes gracefully and the exceptional "Parasol" is semi-lyrical. Abercrombie's guitar stands in stark contrast on the near macabre title track, and more so during "Elbow Room" with heavier moans, cries, vibrato, echoplex slide incursions, and Towner as an afterthought. The best track "Staircase," with twin acoustic guitars, sports tricky intricate lines and changes only virtuosi can achieve. In laid-back surrender for "Romantic Descension," and in passive voicings on "Over & Gone," Towner need not strain to make his brilliant voice heard clearly. An uneven recording for many listeners and critics, Sargasso Sea deserves a second chance, not as an absolutely flawed, imperfect, or unbalanced effort. Like a tale of two cities, it stands as a unique project, perhaps deserving a more refined approach. Though there was a follow-up album released, a third-time's-the-charm contemporary revisit from these masterful guitar geniuses would be welcome.

Delightful introduction to the guitar duo of Abercrombie and Towner, whose strikingly different styles prove remarkably compatible. Towner: “With Abercrombie I can play as much as when playing solo and still get to ply my skills as accompanist.”

Abercrombie-Nussbaum-Mraz-Laverne • Farewell

Review
by Ken Dryden
This 1993 recording is a follow-up to an earlier duo session by Andy LaVerne and John Abercrombie, although they add bassist George Mraz and drummer Adam Nussbaum for this date. Following a rather upbeat, introspective arrangement of the standard "Beautiful Love," they stick to originals by either the pianist or the guitarist. LaVerne's "Mother of Pearl" is a shimmering post-bop work that is full of surprises, while "Opal" is a treasure of a different sort, prominently featuring Abercrombie's brittle-sounding electric guitar. Abercrombie's "Monk Like" has a quirky line much like its namesake might employ, and the unpredictable ballad "Farewell" serves as an appropriate conclusion to this enjoyable CD.

Copland-Abercrombie-Wheeler • Brand New

The second release of this marvelous trio. Each of these men are well established leaders in their own right. Kenny Wheeler, giant of European Jazz, composer, truly original improviser, with an individual sound and approach to music that will enter your soul instantly; John Abercrombie, a remarkable guitarist, well known for his collaborations with Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette, known for his work as a leader since many years, but also known from groups with Charles Lloyd and many others. The pianist that initiated the trio: Marc Copland, one of the real poets of the instrument. These three men created a transparent music that balances on the edge, that is strong at some times, vulnerable at other moments; many times surprising, mostly lyrical, often melancholy, but always real. The linear, counterpoint approach is strengthened by the absence of bass and drums. Three instruments, weaving their lines together into an intricate patchwork of golden melodies.

This time, producer Hein Van de Geyn took the band into a lovely little church in Tilburg (Holland). Here they found the right atmosphere, a truly exceptional Steinway, and the acoustics to record the music in the best way. During two relaxed, yet intense days the music was put down on tape and was later mixed in the excellent studio LeRoy in Amsterdam. Similar to the first recording of the trio, we have a repertoire that gives us compositions of all three players, and a very special rendition of Nat Adderley’s famous song “Work Song” as well as one tune from the standard repertoire: “Taking A Chance On Love”. A magic band, a magic recording.

Enamorado". Una banda mágica, una grabación mágica.

Joseph Tawadros • The Hour Of Separation

Biography
by James Manheim
Joseph Tawadros is among the world's greatest players of the oud, a stringed instrument characteristic of the art music systems of the Arab world. He is especially notable for the range of his collaborations with classical, jazz, and pop musicians.

Tawadros was born in Cairo in 1983. His family moved to Australia when he was three, but he has maintained connections with the eastern Mediterranean region, serving on prize juries for oud competitions in Damascus, Syria, and Istanbul, Turkey. At first, Tawadros wanted to play the trumpet, but when he was eight, he saw a film about Egyptian popular singer Sayed Darwish and decided to take up a more characteristically Egyptian instrument. Tawadros studied at the University of New South Wales, earning a bachelor's degree in music. He also took lessons on various instruments on trips to Egypt, including the violin (in an Arabic style) with Esawi Dagher, the nay bamboo flute, the qanun zither, and the cello, as well as the oud. He is also a composer who has written music for four films, including the 2017 hit Ali's Wedding. Tawadros has toured on four continents, generally collaborating with musicians from other spheres. His collaborators include classical ensembles (the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Academy of Ancient Music in London, where he became the only Australian composer of any type to have his music performed, and the Sydney Symphony); jazz (Jack DeJohnette, Roy Ayers, and Joey DeFrancesco); and the pop sphere (the eclectic banjoist Bela Fleck). He has often performed and recorded with his brother, percussionist James Tawadros.

Tawadros has been widely acclaimed for his recordings, which began in 2004 with his solo oud album Storyteller. At Australia's ARIA Music Awards, he won the Best World Music Album award in 2012 for Concerto of the Greater Sea, in 2013 for Chameleons of the White Shadow, and in 2014 for Permission to Evaporate. On his 2016 album World Music, Tawadros played no fewer than 52 different instruments, with his brother adding 11 more. In 2019, he released the album Betrayal of a Sacred Sunflower, featuring electric guitar, violin, trombone, and piano, and the following year he was heard on the Twilight People album of countertenor Andreas Scholl, performing on his own song composition Beauty is Life. Tawadros lives in London but has continued to perform frequently in Australia.

John Abercrombie-Dan Wall-Adam Nussbaum • Tactics

Review by Scott Yanow
This set is a little different than most ECM releases, because the trio (guitarist John Abercrombie, organist Dan Wall and drummer Adam Nussbaum) performs a couple of fairly straight-ahead standards -- "You and the Night and the Music" and "Long Ago and Far Away" -- in addition to six originals, including Wall's rhythmic "Bo Diddy." Not sounding at all like a typical soul-jazz organ group, these musicians take more advanced improvisations, with Wall (whose accompaniment of Abercrombie is quite atmospheric) emerging as the top soloist.
