Cal Tjader • Amazonas

Cal Tjader crafted one the sleekest and most distinctive sounds in Latin jazz. His cool, shimmering, jazz vibes, gliding fluidly atop fiery, hot Afro-Cuban rhythms, made for a sonic signature that helped introduce the genre into a mainstream audience.
Cal Tjader’s mother was a concert pianist, his father a vaudeville performer. He grew up with them on the road, tap- dancing his way through early childhood. Later, the family settled down in San Mateo on the San Francisco Peninsula, and his father opened a dancing school. After high school and a stint in the Navy, Cal ended up at San Francisco State College, where he first met up with Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond.
Tjader graduated in 1950 with a B.A. in education and a minor in music. With Brubeck, Tjader hit the big time and he liked it. The years between 1949 and 1951 were spent with Brubeck. Then, after a short stint as leader of his own group, Cal joined George Shearing’s Quintet as featured vibraphonist and percussionist. While with Shearing Cal made frequent trips to New York and began listening to the Latin New York bands of Tito Puente and Machito.
When Tjader left Shearing, he formed his own group again and began to record prolifically for Fantasy. Between 1954 and 1962, Tjader cut a series of over 20 albums for Fantasy. The list of people who recorded with him during that time is truly impressive. Some are Eddie Palmieri, (on whom he had a major influence) Vince Guaraldi, Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, Stan Getz, Al McKibbon, Armando Peraza, Latin percussionist Johnnie Rae, and saxophonist Paul Horn. Many of those albums are still in the Fantasy catalog. He then signed on with Verve in 1963, and continued on a roll.

Herbie Mann & Phil Woods • Beyond Brooklyn

Review by Scott Yanow
Flutist Herbie Mann's last record date brought him back to his roots, playing bop-oriented jazz. Actually, he co-led the session with an old friend, altoist Phil Woods, who he did not have many opportunities to play with after the 1950s. The results are delightful, with some bop standards, a few Latin tunes, and some basic originals comprising the program. The instrumentation changes from track to track, with two different rhythm sections being used and guest appearances from Gil Goldstein on accordion and trombonist Jay Ashby. Mann, who spontaneously recorded the closing "Time After Time" at a slightly later date when he was already seriously ill, sounds in prime form throughout this happy set. His final musical chapter is well worth savoring.

Herbie Mann • Gagaku & Beyond

This is easily the strangest record Herbie Mann ever made -- and that's saying something.  Released as an import-only in 1976, Gagaku & Beyond had Mann working in the world music fusion genre with great success long before new age or "world music" were ever marketing catch phrases.  This set puts the "family of Mann" -- that included bassist Tony Levin, drummer Steve Gadd, guitarist Sam T. Brown, as well as Pat Rebillot on keyboards -- in close proximity to the stellar Japanese ensemble Minuro Muraoka.  Muraoka's group concentrated on performing the royal court music of Japan, gagaku, with original instruments that include samisen, koto, riu teki, kakko, shoko, shakuhachi, and the big drums, taiko o-daiko and the wa-daiko. In addition, on track one, "Shomyo," the two bands are joined by Modern Shomyo Study, a quartet of chanting zen monks.  Exotic, huh? Yes, and so stirring and beautifully textured it's a wonder that hundreds of recordings were not modeled on its subtle ambiences, gloriously rich charts, and tasteful engagements.  Mann's group doesn't try to be Japanese, nor do the Japanese musicians try to be jazzers. They engage each other in a place of respect, frankness, and hauntingly similar intentions: to articulate inner spaces using spare structures to illuminate timbre, breath, space, and tonalities.  Yes, the music is melodic, though some may find "Shomyo" a little jarring with its chants, but they are seamless, edgeless, warm, and full.  The two ensembles don't play together all the time -- there are various configurations at work over the album's five cuts -- but those details are for listeners to sort on their own.  For now, this is, along with Mann's more soul- and bossa-oriented recordings, one of his most essential works: groundbreaking, heartrendingly beautiful, and full of deep, contemplative soul. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

///////

~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

Willie Bobo • Talkin' Verve

Review by Richard S. Ginell
Whatever the meaning of the word "talkin," this is still a most valuable release because it succinctly sums up Willie Bobo's Verve recordings, most of which have yet to see the light of the laser. By this time, Bobo had followed Mongo Santamaria into the marketplace as an energetic exponent of the Latin boogaloo, even scoring a minor hit with "Spanish Grease."
But Bobo went even further than Mongo toward an accommodation with the '60s scene, adding the R&B-oriented electric rhythm guitar of Sonny Henry, dropping the piano, incorporating strings and even an occasional graceful vocal now and then. While there are a few covers of '60s standards here, like "The Look of Love" and "Grazing in the Grass" -- and he had the great sense to seek out and record a hip-shaking version of Eddie Harris' "Sham Time" -- Bobo's biggest contribution on these tracks was in providing the inspiration for the Latin rock boom to come. "Evil Ways" is almost an exact blueprint for Carlos Santana's career-launching hit version; "Spanish Grease" reappeared uncredited six years later as Santana's "No One to Depend On," and Santana also played Bobo's lowdown "Fried Neck Bones and Some Homefries" in the band's early days. With Bobo's galvanic congas and timbales swinging at all times, few CDs by a single artist capture the ambience of late-'60s jazz radio in the evening as well as this one.

Astrud Gilberto • Look To The Rainbow

Review from AllMusic (by Bob Rusch):
This was a beautiful bossa nova record of Astrud Gilberto's vocal stylings...All the material (32:13) here, with the exception of "Learn to Live Alone" and "Pretty Place," which were arranged by Al Cohn, were arranged by Gil Evans. With the exception of a Johnny Coles trumpet solo, the personnel was uncredited on this 1966 recording. Discographies have credited Bob Brookmeyer (valve trombone), Kenny Burrell (guitar), and Grady Tate (drums), but except for a few bars of sax, there was no solo individualism in this large Creed Taylor-produced orchestra.

Candido • Latin Fire

One of the great Cuban conga players and percussionists to come in the wake of Chano Pozo, he has been a constant source of authentic Afro-Cuban rhythms since his arrival in the early ‘50’s.

Born Candido Camera, 22 April 1921, Havana, Cuba, with no formal musical training, Candido is largely self taught. He originally started playing on bass and guitar, and later began playing bongos and conga drums. He was with Station CMQ Radio Havana for six years, after which, in 1947 to 1952, he worked with Armando Romue at the Tropicana Club in Havana, Cuba. In Oct. 1952, he emigrated to the USA, and after a six week engagement at the Clover Club in Miami (with the 'Night In Havana' show), he traveled to NYC.

There, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie took him to the Downbeat Club on New York's famed 52nd Street where he sat in with pianist Billy Taylor's group, and worked for the next year with Taylor. The fall of 1954 found him touring with Stan Kenton's band. During 1956-57, he free-lanced in NYC, and was back playing with Dizzy Gillespie's combo in 1958.

Subsequently, Candido was often seen on TV and in nightclubs, both in the US and in Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. He has recorded with a great many big names in jazz, pop and Latin fields including Shearing, Kenton, Gillespie, Dinah Washington, Tito Puente, Machito.

He put out three albums under his own name on ABC-Paramount in the late 1950s, playing alongside Dick Hyman, and had later albums on Solid State (mid-1960s), Blue Note (1970), and Polydor (1973). He signed on with the Salsoul label and put out two for them including the 1982 “Jingo,” which was a dancehall hit worldwide. He collaborated with Patato Valdes and Giovanni Hidalgo for the 2000 outing of “The Conga Kings.” This is Candido playing with two other conga masters and the results are excellent, highly recommended for percussion fans.

Now in his eighties, elder statesman Candido Camero shows no sign of slowing down. His touch on congas is sure, his time is solid, his sound is uniquely his own, and his execution is as nimble as that of a man half his age. Heralded as the father of the technique of coordinated independence, Candido has further accomplishments. For one, he pioneered the use of two congas and later three, whereas in past congueros were content with a single drum.

From Wipipedia
... Camero recorded several albums as a leader for ABC-Paramount in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In the early 1970s, he recorded for the independent jazz label Blue Note Records, before joining the dance music record company Salsoul. With the latter, Camero recorded two albums which were relatively successul and remain in rotation by DJs in the US. In 1979 he released Jingo, a disco-oriented track written by Babatunde Olatunji and recorded on Salsoul Records. This track was also released as a 12" single in June, 1981 in the UK on the Excalibur Record label, running for over 9 minutes, and reached #55 in the BBC Top 75 chart. It was his most successful hit in the UK discos becoming a huge floor filler at that time. In the 2000s, Camero was a member of the Conga Kings alongside Patato and Giovanni Hidalgo. They recorded two albums for Chesky. He recorded another album for Chesky in 2004, Inolvidable, with Graciela, the long-time lead singer for Machito. This album earned a Grammy Award nomination. In 2014, Camero recorded his last album, The Master, also for Chesky. He continued to perform in jazz clubs in New York until the late 2010s.
Death

Camero died on 7 November 2020, at his home in New York. He was 99. His is survived by a daughter, Emerita Camero Dradenes, and a grandson.

Herbie Mann & Machitos Jazz Orchestra • Super Mann

The original recording appeared in 1958 as an album by Machito & his Jazz Orchestra where, although Herbie has an important participation, he appears as a guest musician of Francisco Raúl Gutiérrez Grillo also known as "Machito", musician and orchestra conductor since the end of the '30 of the latin-jazz style, or at that time (1958) "Machito" was much more important than Herbie so it is understood that not appear as a co-author of the album. Years later in 1978 before the increasing fame of Herbie and the hunger for more money of the recorder recycle this recording under the title that of "Herbie Mann & Machitos Jazz Orchestra - Super Mann".As they suspect this is a record quite different from others by Herbie, who throughout his career has not disguised his taste for Latin sounds, in which we must value so much Herbie for his vision ahead of his time of interpretation Of the flute, as well as "Machito" by excellent arrangements and orchestral ensemble.
