El saxo es uno de los instrumentos emblemáticos del jazz, tocado por una mujer por estos días no es más que un detalle, pero hace 50 años esta dama no sólo tocaba el saxo y cantaba sino que también tenía su quinteto y además en la escena de jazz inglés, años antes que los melenudos de Liverpool enfrentaran a la flema inglesa con sus irreverentes locuras, esta dama rompía los cánones no escritos del jazz.
De familia de músicos fue metiéndose poco a poco en el jazz, por la influencia proveniente de Estados Unidos más que por músicos locales, en tiempos de la preguerra, durante y en etapa posterior a la segunda guerra mundial, participando a veces en funciones para los soldados y en la radio también, donde adquirió notoriedad como cantante y saxofonista. Continuó su carrera en forma intermitente hasta los 90, falleciendo a principios de 2011.
