The Hamburg-based Tingvall Trio have longevity on their side. They've been around since 2003, toured in some 30 countries and have collected five German jazz awards. They are popular tourists with a fanbase across Europe but are yet to crack the UK and US markets. While in the past their music might be said to have had plenty of surface gloss with accessible melodic hooks and a love of working towards heroic, hammering climaxes, they have always appeared to be a group with great potential, yet without quite realising it – a case in point their 2013 album In Concert that revealed moments of profundity often undone by lighter, more easily accessible offerings. Clearly it's a balance that has found favour with their fans, but a feeling has persisted with some that if their urge to please their audiences was held in check, greater emotional gravitas might be realised. They are a group that certainly make friends for jazz, breaking down barriers to audiences beyond the music, and Cirklar will certainly do that – a dozen well-crafted originals – but pieces like ‘Vulkanen’, the title track and ‘Sjuan’ suggest a greater depth to their performances is within their grasp.https://www.jazzwise.com/reviews/tingvall-trio-cirklar

Around a long time you know what you are going to get with a Tingvall trio album unless you haven’t been paying attention. The song remains the same from the Swedish-German-Cuban combination. Tunes are by pianist Martin Tingvall and as ever they convey a certain unedgy euphony. When it works there is a sort of catharsis and that transfers into selling a lot of units in Germany especially. But blandness can set in even their biggest supporter would admit. I’m definitely in that camp, having heard the band live at the Pizza about 12 years ago and interviewed the band. They’re great guys.

But things don’t get off to a brilliant start here. That’s in terms of being gripping. Maybe it’s only me. But I didn’t get interested until the 5th track and ‘Life Will Go On’ where the bassist Rodriguez Calvo has more of a role and the tune has a little more ruggedness to it. Later on ‘Cruisin” – and again it is Calvo-led – grit is writ large.

Tingvall trio can be too nice although to their credit they aren’t slick or overly manicured and the quality of the musicianship is high. Drummer Jürgen Spiegel keeps a firm grip on proceedings. But tunes do come at the expense of improvisational freedom and I find myself inwardly urging them to break free a little more. The title track that makes use of Calvo’s bowed work comes late in the album and its folkiness is harnessed effectively and the tune becomes a big, lush ballad.

I think they reached their peak with 2011’s excellent Vägen and only ‘Goodbye’ and the title track on this latest reach the same remarkable levels of enchantment found on that release also issued like all their work by the good folk at remarkable German indie Skip. Nevertheless omit to know about this remarkable trio and their substantial body of work at your peril.

Hace mucho tiempo que sabes lo que obtendrás con un álbum de Tingvall Trio a menos que no hayas estado prestando atención. La canción sigue siendo la misma de la combinación sueco-alemán-cubano. Las melodías son del pianista Martin Tingvall y, como siempre, transmiten cierta eufonía poco edgy. Cuando funciona, hay una especie de catarsis y eso se traslada a vender muchas unidades en Alemania, especialmente. Pero la suavidad puede instalarse incluso en su mayor partidario, admitiría. Definitivamente estoy en ese campamento, habiendo escuchado a la banda en vivo en The Pizza hace unos 12 años y entrevistado a la banda. Son grandes chicos.

Pero las cosas no tienen un comienzo brillante aquí. Eso es en términos de ser apasionante. Tal vez sea solo yo. Pero no me interesé hasta la quinta pista y 'Life Will Go On', donde el bajista Rodríguez Calvo tiene más protagonismo y la melodía tiene un poco más de solidez. Más tarde, ' Cruisin–, y nuevamente es Calvo, el grano está escrito en grande.

La canción principal que hace uso del trabajo inclinado de Calvo llega al final del álbum y su folklore se aprovecha de manera efectiva y la melodía se convierte en una balada grande y exuberante.

Creo que alcanzaron su punto máximo con excellent Vägen de 2011 y only 'Goodbye' y la canción principal de este último alcanzan los mismos niveles notables de encanto que se encuentran en ese lanzamiento también emitido como todo su trabajo por good folk en remarkable German indie Skip. Sin embargo, omita conocer este notable trío y su sustancial cuerpo de trabajo bajo su propio riesgo.
