Ingfried Hoffmann [feat René Thomas] • Hammond Tales

Hip Hammond from Ingfried Hoffmann -- one of the coolest musicians to ever play organ on the European scene, and one with a resume that includes loads of great soundtrack and easy sessions, plus key work with reedman Klaus Doldinger ! This early session has Hoffmann working in surprisingly soulful territory -- hitting the Hammond with a feel that's a mixture of US soul jazz and some of the groovier styles he was working out in the Doldinger combo -- all with a really cool tone on the instrument, one that's unlike anyone else we can think of! Ingfried goes for a really clear, clean touch on the keys -- but there's also a bit of echo at the back too -- a way of holding onto the notes that makes things almost sound a bit spacey at points, even when there's a punch to his playing. There's also a bit of piano on the session -- and other players include Rene Thomas on guitar, Helmut Kandlberger on bass, and the mighty Klaus Weiss on drums -- always a treat on a date like this! Titles include the killer "Midnight Bossa Nova", plus "Ingfried's Blues", "Jada", "TV Swing", "Soul Twist", "Au Clair De La Lune", and "Love For Sale".

Sonny Criss • Mr. Blues Pour Flirter

Biography by Thom Jurek
Alto saxophonist William "Sonny" Criss was an anomaly of the jazz musicians who came up during the bebop era. Criss moved to Los Angeles from Memphis at the age of 15, and at 19 played in Howard McGhee's band with Charlie Parker and Teddy Edwards. As was the norm for every alto player, Parker exerted a huge influence on Criss' playing. His beefy, earthy tone can be heard on a number of Savoy sessions beginning the next year. Criss drifted, playing in jazz and R&B groups, including those led by Johnny Otis, Billy Eckstine, and Stan Kenton. After joining Buddy Rich in 1956, Criss recorded Jazz U.S.A. for Imperial as a leader; it's one of the true underground classics of the hard bop era. Imperial -- mainly an R&B label specializing in New Orleans acts such as Fats Domino -- put no promotional push behind it. Nonetheless, he was able to cut two more sessions for the label: the excellent Go Man! and Sonny Criss Plays Cole Porter. Still playing with Rich, Criss cut At the Crossroads while on tour in Chicago for the Peacock label; the set featured Wynton Kelly and was critically well received. The saxophonist continued to work, fronting his own band in Los Angeles and gigging with others for brief out-of-town jaunts. He signed with Prestige in 1965 and issued a host of fine recordings, This Is Criss! and Sonny's Dream among them. Criss also cut various sessions for Xanadu, Muse, and ABC/Impulse near the end of his life. He committed suicide in 1977 due to the painful consequences of stomach cancer. His fine Crisscraft and Out of Nowhere albums were reissued on CDs, as were his complete Imperial recordings.

Note of egroj:
Certainly this cover is a clear example of covert racism. Fortunately Blue Note, Prestige and a few other labels changed this story.

Artist Biography by Scott Yanow
One of the finest European jazz guitarists to emerge during the 1950s, René Thomas appeared on many sessions with Americans during the next few decades. Influenced as one might expect by Django Reinhardt, Thomas was mostly self-taught and by the 1950s he was a greatly in-demand cool-toned guitarist, playing in a style similar to Jimmy Raney's. In addition to performing with the top European jazz musicians, Thomas worked with Chet Baker (1955), lived in Montreal during 1958-1963, played with Toshiko Akiyoshi and Sonny Rollins, was back in Europe by 1963, and during the next few years worked with Kenny Clarke, Lou Bennett, and Han Bennink among many others. During the 1969-1972 period, Thomas was a member of Stan Getz's European Band (with whom he recorded Dynasty). He died of a sudden heart attack in Spain when he was 47. As a leader, Thomas recorded for Vogue (1954), Barclay, Polydor, Jazzland (1960), RCA, Royal Jazz, and the Italian Vogel label (1974).

René Thomas • The Real Cat

Review by Ken Dryden
Rene Thomas was a Belgian guitarist who hoped to make it big on the international jazz scene following his move to Paris and a flurry of recording activity in the 1950s and early 1960s, though his goal ultimately eluded him. This CD in Verve's Jazz in Paris reissue series combines two separate dates originally made for Barclay and Polydor. For the most part, Thomas' approach to the guitar is rather laid back, particularly in his spacious arrangement to "All the Things You Are." As a result, the music throughout both dates is enjoyable though it falls short of being an essential purchase.

Review
by Nathan Bush
European guitarist Rene Thomas made his debut as a leader with this 1960 date for the Jazzland label. Residing in Quebec at the time, Thomas is joined by an American cast of characters on Guitar Groove. In the bass chair is Teddy Kotick, one-time member of the Horace Silver and Bill Evans groups. Tenor saxophonist J.R. Monterose joins the quintet, fresh from the dates for his own The Message. Albert "Tootie" Heath, then in between stints with J.J. Johnson and the Jazztet, lends his drum work, and Hod O'Brien fills in the gaps on piano. These are session musicians of the highest order: skilled improvisers who always know when to make concessions to a group setting. In addition to the three original numbers on hand, the quintet dips into the book of jazz standards, rendering Burke and VanHeusen's "Like Someone in Love," Gershwin's "How Long Has This Been Going On?," Thelonious Monk's "Ruby, My Dear," and Miles Davis' "Milestones." At times the players are almost too polite, though the spark provided by Heath's snare punctuation and vibrant fills generally keep the band on the ball. "Thomas" himself is in fine, refined form, his sound an exquisitely enunciated flow of cool tones. He reserves "How Long" for himself, stretching out over six minutes, accompanied only by Heath's brushwork and Kotick's reserved bass playing. Though he's made substantial contributions to dates with Chet Baker, Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, and others, Guitar Groove is arguably Thomas' strongest date as leader.

Eddy Louiss • Eddy Louiss Trio

Review by Scott Yanow
Eddy Louiss is one of the most underrated organists of all time, probably because he has always been based in his native France. This 1991 CD puts the focus on the talented and fairly original organist, whose style falls between Jimmy Smith and Wild Bill Davis. Joined by guitarist Rene Thomas and drummer Kenny Clarke for a studio set (the only one by this particular trio), Louiss performs two basic originals (including Clarke's "Don't Want Nothin'," awhich uses the "Ja Da" chord changes), Miles Davis' "Nardis," a heated version of "Hot House," Horace Silver's catchy "No Smoking" and "You've Changed." An excellent all-around showcase that serves as a fine introduction to the very viable organist.
