The Cult • The Singles

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Fronted by vocalist Ian Astbury and featuring guitarist Billy Duffy, the Cult evolved from a Gothic post-punk outfit in 1984, transforming themselves into England's leading hard rock revivalist act. Their image combined the pseudo-mysticism and Native American cultural obsessions of the Doors with the guitar orchestrations of Led Zeppelin, and the three-chord crunch of AC/DC, with blended traces of post-punk goth rock. Their 1984 debut Dreamtime performed well, but follow-up Love amplified their hard rock direction and chart success with breakout single "She Sells Sanctuary." 1987's Rick Rubin-produced Electric, was their hardest record yet and went Top 40 stateside thanks to the smash singles "Lil' Devil," "Love Removal Machine, and "Wildflower." 1989's, Sonic Temple became their most successful album, peaking at ten in America behind single "Edie (Ciao Baby)." The spoils of success began tearing at the members, and they disbanded in 1995. Astbury and Duffy resurrected the Cult for 2001's Beyond Good and Evil. Subsequent efforts included Born Into This (2007), Choice of Weapon (2012), and Under the Midnight Sun (2022).

The origins of the Cult lie in the Southern Death Cult, a goth rock outfit formed by vocalist Ian Astbury (born May 14, 1962) in 1981. Astbury was the son of a merchant navy man, which meant he moved frequently during his youth; at one point in his childhood, his family lived in Canada, where the young Astbury became fascinated with Native Americans, who would become a recurring theme in his songwriting. Astbury eventually settled in Bradford, Yorkshire, where he met a group comprising David Burrows (guitar), Barry Jepson (bass), and Haq Quereshi (drums). Ian joined the group as its lead vocalist (performing with the last name of "Lindsay," which was his mother's maiden name) and had the group renamed the Southern Death Cult. By only their fifth concert, the band was attracting audiences of 2,000. In December 1982, the Southern Death Cult released their first single -- the double A-side "Moya"/"Fatman" -- and the following month, they supported Bauhaus on tour. Though the group's future was looking bright, Astbury pulled the plug on the band because he was frustrated with the positive articles he was receiving in the press. The remaining three members joined Getting the Fear, which eventually became Into a Circle; in the late '80s, Quereshi became a member of Fun^Da^Mental. All of the Southern Death Cult recordings were eventually released in 1986.

Following the breakup, Astbury shortened the name of the group to Death Cult and recruited guitarist Billy Duffy -- who had previously played with Morrissey in the pre-Smiths band the Nosebleeds, as well as Theatre of Hate -- and drummer Ray Mondo and bassist Jamie Stewart, who had previously played with Ritual. Death Cult released an eponymous EP in the summer of 1983; on the EP, Astbury reverted back to his given name. Later in the year, Mondo was replaced by Nigel Preston, who had previously played with Duffy in Theatre of Hate; coincidentally, Mondo became the drummer for Preston's previous group, Sex Gang Children.

In early 1984, the bandmembers decided to excise "Death" from the title, fearing that the word gave them the misleading appearance of being a goth band. Where both Southern Death Cult and Death Cult had been overtly influenced by post-punk, the Cult were a heavy hard rock band with slight psychedelic flourishes. Dreamtime, the group's first album, was released in the fall of 1984, accompanied by the single "Spiritwalker." Dreamtime reached number 21 on the U.K. charts. In the spring of 1985, Preston left the group. For the group's summer single, "She Sells Sanctuary," the band was joined by Big Country's drummer, Mark Brzezicki. "She Sells Sanctuary" became a major U.K. hit, peaking at number 15. During the recording of the group's second album, drummer Les Warner joined the group. Love, released in the fall of 1985, continued the hard rock direction of its teaser single and became a number four hit in Britain.

For their third album, the Cult shuffled their lineup -- Stewart moved to rhythm guitar, while former Zodiac Mindwarp bassist Kid Chaos joined the lineup -- and hired Rick Rubin as producer, and the result, Electric, was their hardest, heaviest record to date. The first single from the album, "Love Removal Machine," became a number 18 hit in the spring of 1987, while the album itself reached number four in the U.K. upon its April release. Later that year, Electric gained the Cult a fan base in America, and the album cracked the U.S. Top 40.

In 1988, the group fired Chaos and Warner, replacing the latter with Matt Sorum; the band failed to hire another bassist. The new lineup released Sonic Temple, which would prove to be the band's most successful effort. The hit single "Fire Woman" helped propel the album into the American Top Ten, and within no time, the Cult were seen hanging out with the likes of Mötley Crüe and Aerosmith, as well as supporting Metallica on the Damaged Justice tour. Though the group was experiencing its best sales, it was fraying behind the scenes due to infighting and substance abuse. By the time they recorded their follow-up to Sonic Temple, Sorum had left to join Guns N' Roses and Stewart had quit; they were replaced by drummer Mickey Curry and bassist Charlie Drayton. The resulting album, Ceremony, was released in the fall of 1991 to weak reviews and disappointing sales.

Following the release of Ceremony, the group took a break for the next three years. In 1993, the band released the U.K.-only hits compilation Pure Cult, which debuted at number one. By summer 1993, the Cult had a new rhythm section, featuring former Mission bassist Craig Adams, second guitarist Mike Dimkich (Channel 3), and drummer Scott Garrett. This lineup recorded The Cult, which was released in late 1994 to poor reviews and sales. In spring 1995, the Cult disbanded, with Ian Astbury forming the Holy Barbarians later in the year. Billy Duffy briefly played with Miles Hunt's Vent 414 before leaving to pursue a solo project. In 2000, the band's catalog was remastered and reissued, and Pure Cult was released in the U.S. (despite a similar compilation, High Octane Cult, having appeared four years earlier). It was followed by Rare Cult, a six-disc box set of rarities.

A new Cult, with Matt Sorum, Martyn LeNoble, and Chris Wyse joining Astbury and Duffy, made their debut in June 1999 at the Tibetan Freedom Festival. This band produced the 2001 album Beyond Good and Evil before the Cult were retired again, as Astbury joined former Doors members Robbie Krieger and Ray Manzarek in the Doors of the 21st Century (later renamed Riders on the Storm). In 2007, it was announced that Astbury had left the band to rejoin Duffy in a new version of the Cult, with Chris Wyse on bass and John Tempesta on drums. They signed to Roadrunner and released Born Into This in 2008, which they promoted over the next few years on their highly publicized Love Live tour. They returned to the studio in 2011 after inking a deal with Cooking Vinyl Records and released their ninth studio album, Choice of Weapon, the following year.

In 2013, Duffy announced in an interview that the Cult were working on new material for 2015. However, personnel changes put a bit of a damper on the band's plans: after 20 years, Dimkich left to play with Bad Religion and Wyse left for Ace Frehley's band. Longtime friend James Stevenson took the second guitar chair, while Grant Fitzpatrick took over on bass to play the band's 2014 world tour. Jane's Addiction bassist Chris Channey came on board in the studio for the band's tenth studio album. With Bob Rock producing, the Cult completed Hidden City in 2015. The first two singles, "Dark Energy" and "Deeply Ordered Chaos," were issued in November and December, respectively, with a third, "Hinterland," appearing in January of 2016. The album followed in February of that year.

Following two world tours, and summers spent playing sheds and festivals on both sides of the Atlantic, the Cult took a well-deserved breather extended by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. In July 2022, they quietly released the video single for "Give Me Mercy." In October they released the full-length Under the Midnight Sun. Produced by Tom Dalgety (Pixies, Ghost) it appeared from hard rock indie Black Hill Records, offering eight tracks that also included a second single in "A Cut Inside."

The Hoochie Coochie Men Feat Jon Lord • Danger White Men Dancing Retail

Well a what a surprise this was. I thought it would be good having already heard the live offering from a few years before but honestly never expected it to be as good as this. Right from the very first note of Jon Lord’s swirling hammond organ you get top quality blues played by some highly experienced musicians at the top of their game.

Opening track ‘The Blues Just Got Sadder’ is a perfect start with the swirling Lord organ leading into a peice of solid blues rock. My only complaint is that it is too short. The second cut ‘Gotta Find Me Some Fire’ is almost Deep Purple meets Thunder in a bluesy kind of way and features a great guitar solo from Tim Gaze who also delivers another excellent vocal. (I am now more than a little concerned as to why I have never heard of him before by the way).

‘Twisted System’ sees the first guest vocalist in the shape of Jeff Duff who does not sound unlike David Clayton-Thomas. This and the fact that the song is very reminiscent of ‘Spinning Wheel’ gives it a real ‘Blood Sweat & Tears’ feel. But nonetheless it’s a cracking track. Jon Lord’s old Deep Purple cohort Ian Gillan takes the mike for the next track ‘Over and Over’. This would not have been out of place on one of the more recent Deep Purple albums and Gillan delivers one of his trademark vocals. The track veers between soft acoustic and hard hitting rock with a great explosive guitar before drifting back into a soft piano ending. A song which would surely have been a classic had it been recorded by Purple in their heyday. In fact the early Purple sound is all over this album just with a little more hint of the blues. ‘Let It Go’ sees Tim Gaze, who does not sound unlike Elmer Gantry (Velvet Opera/Stretch etc) at times, return to the mike and deliver another great vocal over a riff not unlike Purple’s early instrumental classic ‘Wring That Neck(Hard Road). The fourth vocalist on the album Jimmy Barnes takes his first song next on the cover of The Rolling Stones ‘Heart of Stone’. More great organ and guitar interplay and a class vocal make this another great track. Gillan is up again next for ‘If This Ain’t The Blues’ and although this is a more standard blues type song, with that Lord organ in the background it is hard not to think of Deep Purple.

The title track is up next and is a nice foot tapping instrumental with the obligatory organ and guitar solos and more great interplay between the soloists. This is as good a time as any to extole the virtues of bass player Bob Daisley, a figure well known to rock fans from his time with Rainbow, Uriah Heep, Ozzy Osbourne etc and drummer Rob Grosser who provide a good solid rhythm section throughout. ‘Dead Presidents’ follows and is a great peice of swingtime blues with a clever lyric and more swirling Lord organ. It is a song I had not previously heard but was co-written by Willie Dixon so there are probably numerous other versions about. Jimmy Barnes is back for the next track a hard hitting version of the Muddy Waters classic ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’. It may have been a predictable choice of cover but is, you have to admit, certainly appropriate and the performance is good if hardly original. ‘Bottle O’Wine has a really great groove to it and the vocal is delivered by Jeff Duff again in his David Clayton-Thomas Blood Sweat & Tears style. It really is uncanny how similar they sound. The best track on the album though is the penultimate one, the Don Nix penned ‘Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven’. It is just perfect blues with a great vocal, great guitar, meaningful lyrics that are easy to identify with …… “everybody wants the truth but everybody wants to tell a lie” …….. “everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die”…. and of course that classic Lord organ. The final track is actually the weakest on the album but is still pretty good without living up to the quality of earlier tracks. Maybe it suffers from following ‘Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven’ which for me would have been a better closer.

To summarise then this is a great blues album, it’s a great blues rock album and it is probably the best rock style organ playing Jon Lord has come up with since ‘Burn’. Seriously, it is that good. If you are a fan of blues rock and more specifically pre 1975 Deep Purple you simply cannot afford not to hear this album.

Jeff Beck • The Best Of Beck

Review
by Steve Leggett
Ever restless as a musician and constantly changing directions and trying new things, guitarist Jeff Beck is difficult to reduce to a 14-track overview, although this set probably does as well as one could at sketching in the portrait. Beginning as a guitarist for the Yardbirds in the 1960s, Beck hit his stride with the Jeff Beck Group (which featured a then relatively unknown Rod Stewart as lead singer) later in the decade, and "Shapes of Things" (initially a radio hit for the Yardbirds), "Plynth," and "Beck's Bolero" are represented here from that era. Also here are several of Beck's mid-'70s fusion tracks, including "Freeway Jam" and "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," as well as his 1980s reunion with Stewart, “People Get Ready.” Again, Beck is a difficult artist to capture in a single-disc drive-by, but for folks curious about this fine guitarist and wanting a quick sampler of his work in several of his various guises, this set works fine as an introduction.

Focus • Moving Waves

Review by Paul Co
The album that boosted Focus into at least semi-fame outside of continental Europe, Moving Waves blasts off with their hit single, "Hocus Pocus." Built around a killer guitar hook by Jan Akkerman and a series of solo turns by the band, this instrumental replaced "Wipeout" as a staple of FM radio. The bizarrely hilarious vocal and accordion solos by Thijs van Leer -- one of which absurdly concludes with rousing stadium cheers -- have to be heard to be believed. After this over-the-top performance, the other tracks seem comparatively constrained: the gentle "Le Clochard" features some gorgeous classical guitar over Mellotron strings. The album concludes with "Eruption," which while mimicking the multi-suite nomenclature of Yes and King Crimson, is essentially a side-long jam session. Stop-time Emersonian organ solos alternate with languid sections of jazzy guitar redolent of Santana, while still other sections are flat-out electric blues-rock stomps. It's impressive playing, though it comes off as a bit meandering after the tightly structured solos that began the album.

Note by egroj:
Mr. Paul refers to Emerson (ELP) indicating his influence or that he borrowed riiffs from the great progressive organist, being that this Focus album was recorded before the second ELP album, and being that Focus was formed a year before ELP; "Santana" and "Abraxas" are contemporary albums of Carlos Santana and I sincerely don't think they are a strong influence; the same can be said of Yes or King Crimson. While everyone took something from everyone, symphonic or progressive rock was composed and performed by musicians of enormous talent and knowledge, along with experimentation with new horizons and fusion with other genres.

PS: Mr. Paul also forgets "Janis" a beautiful and melancholic ballad that alone is worth the album.

Focus • Hamburger Concerto

Review by Ben Davies
Focus had well proven their ability to write rocking instrumentals by the time of this release. Their catalog, although consisting of four albums, rarely had a dull moment between them. Hamburger Concerto is equally consistent, much of it being prime Focus material. The Akkerman-written "Birth" and "Early Birth" are examples of Focus fully flexing their muscles, featuring superb guitar work and amazing all-round musicianship, as well as sporting some superb riffs. The usual lengthy instrumentals are present also, as well as some manic vocals from the manic but genius Thijs Van Leer. Although Hamburger Concerto is not as unerring as Moving Waves or Focus III, anyone who enjoyed the previous releases would undoubtedly find great satisfaction from this album.

 Artist Biography by Jason Ankeny
Best remembered for their bizarre chart smash "Hocus Pocus," Dutch progressive rock band Focus was formed in Amsterdam in 1969 by vocalist/keyboardist/flutist Thijs van Leer, bassist Martin Dresden, and drummer Hans Cleuver. With the subsequent addition of guitarist Jan Akkerman, the group issued its debut LP, In and Out of Focus, in 1970, earning a European cult following thanks to the single "House of the King." Dresden and Cleuver were replaced by bassist Cyril Havermanns and drummer Pierre Van der Linden for the English-language follow-up, Moving Waves; the record generated the hit "Hocus Pocus," a hallucinatory epic distinguished by Akkerman's guitar pyrotechnics and van Leer's demented yodeling. Easily one of the flat-out strangest songs ever to crack the American pop charts, the single peaked at number nine in the spring of 1973, by which time Focus had already exchanged Havermanns for bassist Bert Ruiter and issued their third album, Focus III, which yielded the minor hit "Sylvia." In the wake of 1974's Hamburger Concert, the band streamlined the classical aspirations of earlier efforts to pursue a more pop-oriented approach on records like Ship of Memories and Mother Focus; though roster changes regularly plagued Focus throughout the period, none was more pivotal than the 1976 exit of Akkerman, who was replaced by guitarist Philip Catherine for 1978's Focus con Proby, cut with British pop singer P.J. Proby. Focus then disbanded, with the original lineup reuniting in 1990 for a Dutch television special. After splitting again, they reunited for one-offs in 1995 and in 1999. In 2002, Van Leer reformed Focus with a new line-up releasing the albums Focus 8 (2002), Focus 9 / New Skin (2006), and Focus X (2012). In 2010, Nike used "Hocus Pocus" in its Word Cup commerical, Write The Future, renewing global interest in the band. In 2016, Van Leer shifted personnel again to include drummer Pierre van der Linden, guitarist Menno Gootjes, and bassist Udo Pannekeet and released the studio album Focus 8.5 / Beyond the Horizon and Live In England. A year later, Cherry Red issued The Focus Family Album compilation.

Grand Funk Railroad • We're An American Band

Review
by William Ruhlmann
Having made several changes in their business and musical efforts in 1972, Grand Funk Railroad made even more extensive ones in 1973, beginning with their name, which was officially truncated to "Grand Funk." And keyboardist Craig Frost, credited as a sideman on Phoenix, the previous album, was now a full-fledged bandmember, filling out the musical arrangements. The most notable change, however, came with the hiring of Todd Rundgren to produce the band's eighth album. Rundgren, a pop/rock artist in his own right, was also known for his producing abilities, and he gave Grand Funk exactly what they were looking for: We're an American Band sounded nothing like its muddy, plodding predecessors. Sonically, the record was sharp and detailed and the band's playing was far tighter and more accomplished. Most important, someone, whether the band or Rundgren, decided that gruff-voiced drummer Don Brewer should be employed as a lead singer as often as guitarist Mark Farner. Brewer also contributed more as a songwriter, and the results were immediate.
The album's title song, an autobiographical account of life on the road written and sung by Brewer, was released in advance of the album and became a gold-selling number one hit, Grand Funk's first really successful single. Despite the band's previous popularity, for many, it must have been the first Grand Funk record they either heard or bought. Elsewhere on the album, Farner contributed his usual wailing vocals and guitar, singing of his heartfelt, if simpleminded, political concerns. But We're an American Band really belonged to Brewer and Rundgren, and its success constituted a redefinition of Grand Funk that came just in time.

Easy Riders, Rolling Stones On the Road in America, from Delta Blues to 70s Rock

Easy Riders, Rolling Stones delves into the history of twentieth century American popular music to explore the emergence of 60s “road music.” This music—which includes styles like blues and R&B——took shape at pivotal moments in history and was made by artists and performers who were, in various ways, seekers after freedom. Whether journeying across the country, breaking free from real or imaginary confines, or in the throes of self-invention, these artists incorporated their experiences into scores of songs about travel and movement, as well as creating a new kind of road culture.

Starting in the Mississippi Delta and tracking the emblematic routes and highways of road music, John Scanlan explores the music and the life of movement it so often represented, identifying  “the road” as the key to an existence that was uncompromising. He shows how the road became an inspiration for musicians like Jim Morrison and Bob Dylan and how these musicians also drew stimulus from a Beat movement that was equally enthralled with the possibilities of travel. He also shows how the quintessential American concepts of freedom and travel influenced English bands such as the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. These bands may have been foreigners in the US, but they also found their spiritual home there—of blues and rock ‘n’ roll––and glimpsed the possibility of a new kind of existence, on the road.

Easy Riders, Rolling Stones is an entertaining, rich account of a key strand of American music history, and will appeal to both road music fans and music scholars who want to “head out on the highway.”

Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers: The Rise of Motörhead

“Motörhead, remember me now, Motörhead, alright!” Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers is the first book to celebrate the classic-era Motörhead lineup of Lemmy Kilmister, “Fast” Eddie Clarke, and Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor. Through interviews with all of the principal troublemakers, Martin Popoff celebrates the formation of the band and the records that made them legends: Motörhead, Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades, No Sleep ’til Hammersmith, and Iron Fist. An in-depth coda brings the story up to date with the shocking recent deaths of Taylor and Kilmister. Motörhead comes to life in this book as bad-luck bad boys ― doused in drink and drugs, most notably speed ― incapable of running their lives right, save for Fast Eddie, who is charged with holding things together. Popoff also examines the heady climate of music through the band’s rise to prominence during the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, with detailed reflection on Motörhead’s unique position in the scene as both originators and embattled survivors who carried on the renegade spirit of those times.
