Tom Jobim & Sérgio Mendes • Tom Jobim & Sérgio Mendes

This is described on the cover somewhat disingenuously as a collaborative album, when in fact it is a compilation. Five of the tracks (not one continuous side, as suggested by the liner notes) are taken from Mendes' 1965 album Bossa Nova York/The Swinger From Rio. The other six tracks are from second session with Caymmi and his son Dori. The Mendes tracks alternate with the Caymmi tracks. Jobim is the only constant.

Mendes and Brasil '66 • Four Sider

Review by Stephen Cook
Covering the extent of Brasil '66's output from 1966-1972, Four Sider is the best available retrospective for those new to Mendes' successful Brazilian pop outfit (the 45-song Very Best of Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 offers a more comprehensive, yet potentially daunting overview). Typical of the band's original albums, Four Sider includes a mix of Brazilian material and '60s pop hits. Also on display is Mendes' winning blend of bossa nova rhythms and lounge-a-go-go elements (churning organ riffs and rock basslines), complimented by a variety of percussion, airy vocal harmonies, and his own jazz-informed keyboard contributions and horn charts. Highlights include renditions of the Beatles' "Nowhere Man" and Joni Mitchell's "Chelsea Morning," in addition to several Brazilian hits, like Jorge Ben's "Mais Que Nada" and Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave." Other Brazilian luminaries are represented as well, including Edu Lobo, Dori Caymmi, and Oscar Neves, not to mention Mendes himself ("Look Around"). Wrapping up the set are a few Brasil '77 cuts, which spotlight the post-bossa nova sounds of tropicalismo (Ben's "Pais Tropical" and Mendes' "Promise of a Fisherman"). This is a fine collection; one that shows Mendes wasn't simply another space-age bachelor, but an innovative musician and arranger as well.

"Comin' Home Baby" is a song originally written as an instrumental by Ben Tucker and first recorded by the Dave Bailey Quintet in 1961. It was then recorded by Herbie Mann, and lyrics were written by Bob Dorough. The vocal version became a US Top 40 hit for American jazz singer Mel Tormé in 1962, and the song has since been covered numerous times.

Review by Richard S. Ginell
The sound and band that served Sergio Mendes well on Fool on the Hill remain intact on Crystal Illusions, with few modifications. Dave Grusin is right there with a lush, haunting orchestral chart when needed; Lani Hall is thrust further into the vocal spotlight, as cool and alluring as ever in Portuguese or English. Mendes remained on the lookout for fresh Brazilian tunes, and he came up with a coup, one of the earliest covers of a Milton Nascimento tune to reach North America, "Vera Cruz" (with Hall's English lyrics, it became "Empty Faces"), as well as Dori Caymmi's "Dois Dias." The two singles, the perky "Pretty World" and sax-streaked cover of Otis Redding's "The Dock of the Bay," are nice slices of Mendes pop, though they were not significant hits. And yes, Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 did take a large risk on the title track, a lengthy, kaleidoscopic treatment of an Edu Lobo tune that, inspired perhaps by "MacArthur Park," shattered radio's time barrier at seven minutes and 50 seconds. Yet while Grusin goes into a psychedelic freakout, we get a rare chance to hear Mendes stretch out a bit on electric piano. Weird and overblown, but wonderful.

VA • Bossa Jazz The Birth Of Hard Bossa, Samba Jazz And The Evolution Of Brazilian Fusion 1962-73

Review by John Bush
Elenco wasn't notable only for the packaging and design of its album covers -- a strident black-and-white color scheme, leavened only by occasional reds and grays. The label also produced most of the best Brazilian music of the mid-'60s, that fertile time just after the bossa craze had kicked off worldwide and before psychedelia and fascism were about to force the unlikely birth of tropicalia. This two-disc reissue of all things Elenco is a treasure for fans of Brazilian music; for the record, Bossa Jazz has a companion volume called Brazil Bossa Beat!, but the crossover between jazz and beat is liberal. Here are many, if not most, of the figures who were in the process of making Brazilian jazz one of the most potent and fertile scenes in post-bop jazz, with Airto Moreira, Eumir Deodato, Sergio Mendes, Baden Powell, João Donato, Tamba 4, and of course, Antonio Carlos Jobim. (Even the artists less familiar to those outside the Brazilian sphere, such as Zimbo Trio and Sambalanço Trio, produced top-flight work.) Soul Jazz has done many favors to Brazilian music, but this labor of love belongs near the top.
