Larry Carlton • The Warner Albums

Biography by Richard Skelly
A hugely successful guitarist and composer, Larry Carlton emerged from the Los Angeles studio scene of the late '60s, eventually becoming a popular contemporary jazz artist in his own right. Noted for his lithe technique, sweet-toned, blues-inflected sound, and distinctive use of volume pedals, Carlton first came to prominence as a member of crossover jazz and R&B outfit the Crusaders. From there, he developed into an in-demand session player, recording on up to 500 albums a year and appearing on over 100 gold albums. His studio credits from the '70s and early '80s include work with musicians and groups like Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Michael Jackson, Sammy Davis, Jr., Herb Alpert, Quincy Jones, Bobby Bland, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and literally dozens of others. Although he recorded a number of LPs under his own name as early as 1968, he didn't land a major-label contract until 1978, when he signed with Warner Bros. and began a long stretch of releasing his own albums. Along the way he also expanded into film and television work, and picked up his first of four Grammy Awards for his work on the Hill Street Blues theme. With over 30 of his own albums and a regular touring schedule, Carlton remains a well-respected, highly sought-after performer.

A native of Torrance, California, Carlton began taking guitar lessons when he was six. His first professional gig was at a supper club in 1962. After hearing Joe Pass on the radio, he was inspired to play jazz and blues. Wes Montgomery and Barney Kessel became important influences soon after he discovered the jazz guitar stylings of Pass. B.B. King and other blues guitarists had an impact on Carlton's style as well. He honed his guitar-playing skills in the clubs and studios of greater Los Angeles while he attended a local junior college and Long Beach State College for a year until the Vietnam War ended. Carlton toured with the Fifth Dimension in 1968 and began doing studio sessions in 1970. His early session work included studio dates with pop musicians like Vikki Carr, Andy Williams, and the Partridge Family.

In 1971, he was asked to join the Crusaders shortly after they'd decided to drop the word "Jazz" from their name, and he remained with the group until 1976. In between tours with the Crusaders, he also did studio session work for hundreds of recordings in every genre. But it was while he with the Crusaders that he developed his signature, highly rhythmic, often bluesy style. Carlton delivered his self-titled debut for Warner Bros. in 1978, shortly after he was recognized for his groundbreaking guitar playing on Steely Dan's Royal Scam album. (Carlton contributed the memorable guitar solo on "Kid Charlemagne.'')

He released four more albums for Warner Bros., Strikes Twice (1980), Sleepwalk (1981), Eight Times Up (1982), and the Grammy-nominated Friends (1983), before parting ways with the label. Also during this period, he branched out into writing for TV and films, composing music for Against All Odds, Who's the Boss, and the theme for Hill Street Blues. The latter won a Grammy Award in 1981 for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. He continued studio session work and toured in between, emerging again in 1986 on MCA Records with an all-acoustic album, Discovery, which contained an instrumental remake of Michael McDonald's hit "Minute by Minute." The single won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance in 1987. Carlton's live album Last Nite, released in 1987, got him a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance.

While working on his next album for MCA, On Solid Ground, Carlton was the victim of random gun violence, and was shot in the throat by gun-wielding juveniles outside Room 335, his private studio near Burbank, California. The bullet shattered his vocal cords and caused significant nerve trauma, but through intensive therapy and a positive frame of mind, Carlton completed work on On Solid Ground in 1989. He formed Helping Innocent People (HIP), a nonprofit group to aid victims of random gun violence.

Despite the tragedy foisted on him in the late '80s after he was shot, with a long period of hospitalization and rehabilitation, Carlton continued his active recording and performing schedule over the next two decades, beginning with a number of albums during the '90s on the GRP label: 1992's Kid Gloves; 1993's Renegade Gentleman; 1995's Larry & Lee (with Lee Ritenour); and 1996's The Gift. Carlton also released the 1995 holiday collection Christmas at My House on MCA. And in 1997 he replaced Lee Ritenour in the popular contemporary jazz outfit Fourplay, first appearing on the group's 4 album in 1998.

The 2000s found Carlton as active as ever, recording live and in the studio as both leader and collaborator for a variety of labels. Two albums on Warner Bros. began the decade, Fingerprints -- including guest appearances by Michael McDonald, Vince Gill, Kirk Whalum, and Vinnie Colaiuta -- in 2000, and Deep Into It in 2001. A popular concert draw in Japan, Carlton could be heard as a collaborator on two live recordings from that island country during the decade, Live in Osaka (with Steve Lukather), issued in 2001 on the Favored Nations label, and Live in Tokyo (with Robben Ford) on 335 Records in 2007.

Meanwhile, his albums as a leader continued, with Sapphire Blue and Fire Wire released by Bluebird/RCA in 2004 and 2005, respectively, and The Jazz King -- with Carlton leading an all-star band performing music he composed on commission to celebrate the 80th birthday and ascension to the throne of Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej -- issued by Sony BMG in 2008. In 2009 Carlton appeared as guest guitarist on selected dates during Steely Dan's U.S. summer tour. Take Your Pick (with Tak Matsumoto) appeared in 2010.

In 2011, he paid homage to Philly soul pioneers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff with Larry Carlton Plays the Sound of Philadelphia. Also that year, he played on vocalist Michele Pillar's holiday album I Hear Angels Calling. Four Hands & a Heart, Vol. 1 appeared in 2012, followed by the holiday-themed Four Hands & a Heart Christmas in 2014. Over the next several years, Carlton remained busy touring, and he recorded with Paul Brown, Fourplay, and the SWR Big Band. In 2018, he joined actor/comedian/musician Harry Shearer on the Derek Smalls album Smalls Change (Meditations Upon Ageing).

Take Your Pick (con Tak Matsumoto) apareció en 2010.

Biography by Matt Collar
An acclaimed fusion guitarist, Al Di Meola first rose to prominence in the 1970s as a fiery jazz-rock pioneer before embracing a globally expansive mix of sounds. A key member of Chick Corea's landmark fusion band Return to Forever, Di Meola established his reputation on many of the group's classic dates before coming into his own on albums like 1977's Elegant Gypsy and 1980's Splendido Hotel. Along with tours in his all-star guitar trio with John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia, Di Meola has collaborated on projects with luminaries like Stanley Clarke, Larry Coryell, Paul Simon, Luciano Pavarotti, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Charlie Haden, and others. He has continued to expand his sound on albums like 1990's World Sinfonia, 2011's Pursuit of Radical Rhapsody, and 2018's Opus, balancing his fusion roots with forays into Argentinian tango and Spanish flamenco, as well as Middle Eastern, North African, and Afro-Cuban traditions.

Born in 1954 in Jersey City, New Jersey, Di Meola started playing guitar at a young age, inspired by bands like the Ventures and the Beatles. A diligent student, he progressed quickly and by his teens was already a gifted player. It was during high school that he discovered jazz, listening to artists like Kenny Burrell and Tal Farlow. However, it was his exposure to innovative fusion guitarist Larry Coryell that sparked him to blend jazz, blues, rock, and more. In 1972, he enrolled at Boston's Berklee College of Music, where he joined a quartet featuring keyboardist Barry Miles. A tape of the group eventually landed in the hands of keyboardist Chick Corea, who quickly offered Di Meola a chance to replace outgoing guitarist Bill Connors in his fledgling fusion ensemble Return to Forever. Di Meola left school prior to finishing his degree and hit the road with the group, which then included bassist Stanley Clarke, and drummer Lenny White. It was with Di Meola that Return to Forever achieved their greatest commercial success, releasing albums like 1974's Where Have I Known Before, 1975's Grammy-winning No Mystery, and 1976's Romantic Warrior, all-of-which cracked the U.S. Top 40.

After Return to Forever disbanded, Di Meola (then only 22 years old) embarked on a solo career, starting with 1976's Land of the Midnight Sun. In many ways a continuation of his work with Return to Forever, the album included contributions by Corea and White, as well as drummer Steve Gadd, bassists Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke, Barry Miles, and others. A string of successful albums followed and some remain the finest jazz fusion recordings of the era, including 1977's gold-certified Elegant Gypsy, 1978's Casino, and 1980's Splendido Hotel, all of which found Di Meola further expanding his fusion skills and incorporating elements of Spanish, Latin, and world influences.

More genre-crossing followed in the '80s as Di Meola united with fellow guitarists Mahavishnu Orchestra's John McLaughlin and classical star Paco de Lucía for 1980's Friday Night in San Francisco. De Lucia was also on board for Di Meola's fifth solo album, 1982's Electric Rendezvous, which also featured keyboardists Jan Hammer and Philippe Saisse, Steve Gadd, and others. A similarly star-studded affair, Scenario, arrived in 1983 and found Di Meola playing with Genesis' Phil Collins, Yes drummer Bill Bruford, bassist Tony Levin, and keyboardist Hammer. Still more explorations followed in 1985 as Di Meola embraced Brazilian sounds, pairing with percussionist Airto Moreira for Soaring Through a Dream and the duo album Cielo e Terra.

Throughout the '80s and '90s, Di Meola earned yearly top honors in Guitar Player magazine polls. He also found himself in-demand as a collaborator and showcase performer, playing on albums by Paul Simon, Stanley Jordan, and Stomu Yamashta, among others. Into the '90s Di Meola shifted almost entirely away from fusion, concentrating more on acoustic-based music that found him incorporating yet more global traditions. Tango rhythms especially played a role in his sound, as on 1990's World Sinfonia, Di Meola Plays Piazzolla, and 1993's Heart of the Immigrants. There were also further all-star dates, as he joined Stanley Clarke and Jean-Luc Ponty for 1995's Rite of Strings and reunited with McLaughlin and de Lucia for 1996's The Guitar Trio. Two years later, he released the synth-heavy The Infinite Desire, which featured guest spots from Herbie Hancock and Peter Erskine. He rounded out the decade with 1999's Winter Nights, his first-ever holiday-themed album.

During the 2000s, Di Meola continued this eclectic approach with releases like 2003's Revisited, 2006's Consequence of Chaos, and 2007's Diabolic Inventions and Seduction for Solo Guitar, Vol. 1: Music of Astor Piazzolla. The following year, he paired with flutist Eszter Horgas for the concert album He and Carmen. In 2011, Di Meola delivered the Latin-infused studio album Pursuit of Radical Rhapsody, featuring bassist Charlie Haden and Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba. 2013's All Your Life: A Tribute to the Beatles Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London found the guitarist reworking songs from the Lennon/McCartney songbook.

The lushly textured fusion effort Elysium followed in 2015. Two years later, Di Meola delivered the concert album Morocco Fantasia, recorded live at the Mawazine Festival in Rabat, Morocco. Along with Di Meola's band, the show featured guest appearances by Moroccan musicians oud player Said Chraibi, violinist Abdellah Meri, and percussionist Tarik Ben Ali. In 2018, he delivered Opus, which featured contributions from Cuban-born pianist Kemuel Roig. Across the Universe, Di Meola's second exploration of the music of the Beatles, arrived in 2020.

Grant Green • Green Street

Review by Michael G. Nastos
As a trio, this edition of guitarist Grant Green's many ensembles has to rank with the best he had ever fronted. Recorded on April Fool's Day of 1961, the band and music are no joke, as bassist Ben Tucker and drummer Dave Bailey understand in the most innate sense how to support Green, lay back when needed, or strut their own stuff when called upon. Still emerging as an individualist, Green takes further steps ahead, without a pianist, saxophonist, or most importantly an organist. His willpower drives this music forward in a refined approach that definitely marks him as a distinctive, immediately recognizable player. It is also a session done in a period when Green was reeling in popular demand, as this remarkably is one of six recordings he cut for Blue Note as a leader in 1961, not to mention other projects as a sideman. To say his star was rising would be an understatement. The lean meatiness of this group allows all three musicians to play with little hesitation, no wasted notes, and plenty of soul. Another aspect of this studio date is the stereo separation of Green's guitar in one speaker, perhaps not prevalent in modern recordings, but very much in use then. Check out the atypical (for Green) ballad "'Round About Midnight," as the guitarist trims back embellishments to play this famous melody straight, with a slight vibrato, occasional trills, and a shuffled bridge. The trio cops an attitude similar to Dizzy Gillespie for the introduction to "Alone Together," with clipped melody notes and a bass filler from Tucker. Three of Green's originals stamp his personal mark on rising original soulful post-bop sounds, as "No. 1 Green Street" has basic B-flat, easy-grooving tenets similar to his previously recorded tune "Miss Ann's Tempo." Two interesting key changes and chord accents identify the outstanding "Grant's Dimensions" beyond its core bop bridge and jam configuration not the least of which contains a hefty bass solo from the criminally underrated Tucker and Bailey trading fours. "Green with Envy" should be familiar to fans of Horace Silver, as it is almost identically based on the changes of "Nica's Dream," a neat adaptation full of stop-starts and stretched-out improvising over ten minutes. (The alternate take of this one on the expanded CD reissue is a full two minutes shorter.) If this is not a definitive jazz guitar trio, they have not yet been born, and Green Street stands as one of Grant Green's best recordings of many he produced in the ten prolific years he was with the Blue Note label.

Dave Stryker • Groove Street

Biography
Whether you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker fronting his own group (with 25 CD’s as a leader to date), or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and many others, you know why Gary Giddins in the Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.” He was recently voted once again one of the Top Guitarists in the 2014 Downbeat Critics and Readers polls for the 7th time. His most recent CD “Eight Track” was also picked as one of the Top Albums of 2014 in the Downbeat Readers Poll.

Dave Stryker grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and moved to New York City in 1980. After establishing himself in the local music scene, he joined organist Jack McDuff’s group for two years 1984-85. When McDuff wasn’t on the road (literally traveling by van all over the country) they worked a steady four-night a week gig at Dude’s Lounge in Harlem. His first break, this turned out to be an invaluable experience, paying his dues night after night with the soulful jazz organist. It was at Dude’s Lounge that Stryker met tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, who would occasionally sit in. After leaving McDuff, Turrentine asked Stryker to join his quintet. From 1986-1995 he played with the legendary saxophonist at all the major festivals, concert halls, and clubs throughout the world. He is featured on two Turrentine CD’s (Stanley recorded Stryker’s tune “Sidesteppin”). With Turrentine, Stryker was able to play with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie and Freddie Hubbard. The ten years playing alongside the tenor legend helped Stryker realize the importance of having his own sound. Dave continued to work with Stanley and was with him during his final week at the Blue Note in NYC, when he passed in Sept. 2000.

Early on Stryker realized that as much as he loved playing standards and the jazz repertoire he had to have something of his own to give to the music. He feels that his writing combined with his playing is what shapes his musical expression. He has recorded and published over 130 of his own compositions. Eighteen of those compositions (from the first five SteepleChase CD’s) are compiled in the book : The Music of Dave Stryker (SteepleChase Music) which can be ordered on this website. Some of the other artists who have recorded his music are: Stanley Turrentine, Kevin Mahogany, Victor Lewis, and Steve Slagle. Dave continues to perform with The Dave Stryker Organ Trio, his Blue to the Bone Band, and The Stryker / Slagle Band. Recent gigs for The Stryker / Slagle Band have included a recent week at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Monterey Jazz Festival, The Blue Note in Las Vegas, The Jazz Bakery in LA, and a 2003 tour of Japan.

Sideman work has included vocalist Kevin Mahogany’s group, with Dave writing and arranging music for Kevin’s Telarc release Pride and Joy and Another Time, Another Place on Warner Bros and tours of Europe, Japan, Brazil, Poland and Carnegie Hall. He also has worked with Blue Note saxophonist Javon Jackson and pianist Eliane Elias. He has appeared on over 50 CD’s as a sideman. As a producer, Stryker compiled the CD The Guitar Artistry of Billy Rogers which is the only existing record of the brilliant jazz playing of the late underground legend who was his friend, former teacher and member of the Crusaders. He has also produced “A Tribute to Grant Green” on Evidence Music.

Dave is the Adjunct Professor of Jazz guitar at Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, and at the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University. He is passing along his experience by teaching both privately The Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop, The Litchfield Jazz Camp, and the Jazzhouse Kids Workshop in Montclair NJ.

Dave sigue tocando con The Dave Stryker Organ Trio, su Blue to the Bone Band, y The Stryker / Slagle Band.

Kenny Burrell • Listen To The Dawn

Review by Ron Wynn
Sharp trio set. Burrell is backed by excellent bass/drums duo of Rufus Reid and Ben Riley, both of whom are Burrell's playing equals. The results are uniformly solid, sometimes more emphatic than others. Burrell is still playing in a relaxed, easy groove, but occasionally increases the energy level. https://www.allmusic.com/album/listen-to-the-dawn-mw0000079933

Cal Tjader & Charlie Byrd • Tambu

Review by Richard S. Ginell
Still trying to stay in tune with the Seventies, Cal Tjader joins forces with another refugee from another time, guitarist Charlie Byrd, for an album of contemporary Brazilian-flavored jazz. The alliance is forged mostly on Byrd's terms, with bossa nova, samba and percussive displays from Brazil's interior dominating the grooves. This time, after proving very adaptable to previous experiments, Tjader seems to be out in the cold in these settings, and he lays out a lot more often than usual on this album. Byrd rides along in his gentle, prickly-toned manner on acoustic and electric guitars, and the rhythm section shifts personnel and instruments from track to track. Yet oddly enough, this is still a musically rich feast. Electric pianist Mike Wolff's "Samba de Oneida" is a marvelously propulsive samba, and "Tereza My Love," one of Antonio Carlos Jobim's most attractive sleepers, is given a lovely rendition. The title track, written by Airto Moreira, is given an authentic, rambunctious Airto-style treatment, very much up-to-date, but Cal doesn't sound totally comfortable with the rhythm on vibes, spending most of his time on timbales. Even though this isn't prime Tjader, the overall quality of the music makes it a winner.

Barney Kessel • Bluesology

Biography
One of the finest guitarists to emerge after the death of Charlie Christian, Barney Kessel was a reliable bop soloist throughout his career. He played with a big band fronted by Chico Marx (1943), was fortunate enough to appear in the classic jazz short Jammin' the Blues (1944), and then worked with the big bands of Charlie Barnet (1944-1945) and Artie Shaw (1945); he also recorded with Shaw's Gramercy Five. Kessel became a busy studio musician in Los Angeles, but was always in demand for jazz records. He toured with the Oscar Peterson Trio for one year (1952-1953) and then, starting in 1953, led an impressive series of records for Contemporary that lasted until 1961 (including several with Ray Brown and Shelly Manne in a trio accurately called the Poll Winners). After touring Europe with George Wein's Newport All-Stars (1968), Kessel lived in London for a time (1969-1970). In 1973, he began touring and recording with the Great Guitars, a group also including Herb Ellis and Charlie Byrd. A serious stroke in 1992 put Barney Kessel permanently out of action, but many of his records (which include dates for Onyx, Black Lion, Sonet, and Concord, in addition to many of the Contemporaries) are available, along with several video collections put out by Vestapol. Kessel was diagnosed with inoperable cancer in 2001, which eventually took his life in May of 2004. He was 80 years old. ~ Scott Yanow

Ulf Meyer & Martin Wind feat. Alex Riel • Kinnings

This record was recorded in Hamburg in Oct. 2002. The band is comprised of four top European musicians - three Germans and one Dane. Half of the tunes are original compositions, the rest are older jazz standards ("Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans" and Duke Ellington's "Ain't Got Nothing But the Blues"), and newer jazz standards ("Groove Merchant"), also including some latin inspiration ("O Grande Amor"). Guitarist Ulf Meyer has a fine, flowing feel, sometimes reminiscent of Pat Metheny. Alex Riel, from Denmark, is one of the best and most famous drummers in Europe today. The four musicians on this CD are highly compatible, making the music sound effortless and relaxed.

Meyer came into contact early on with the Scandinavian way of playing jazz with folk elements; the melodic has a big influence on his guitar style. With the guitarist Christoph Oeding he performed as a duo for a long time; He also gave concerts with him at the Jazz Baltica Festival in 1994 and released the joint album Early in 2006 . He has released a number of recordings with his own instrumental compositions. In a duo with bassist Martin Wind , he released the albums The Baltic (1994), Live im Orpheus (2012)and Liquorice & Beer (2018), and in a trio with Alex Riel Kinnings (2003) and Feels Like Home (2005). He also performs in a duo with bassist Lars Hansen. As a studio musician, he was also active for various CD library productions (SEL / Selected Sound / EMI). As a film composer, he wrote songs and film music for Rote Rosen , Die Rote Zora and other cinema and television films. He can also be heard on albums by Manfred Maurenbrecher and Hannes Wader. second.wiki

Zoot Sims & Bucky Pizzarelli • Elegiac

Review by Scott Yanow
This generally interesting but only adequately recorded set, which was issued for the first time on this 1996 CD, features duets played by Zoot Sims (doubling on tenor and soprano) and guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli. The pair mostly sticks to swinging standards, other than Neal Hefti's "Fred" and Rod McKuen's "Jean," and there are some strong moments (particularly on "Lester Leaps In," "Limehouse Blues" and "Softly As In a Morning Sunrise"), but one does miss the bass and drums after awhile.
