Review from AllMusic (by Brian Bartolini) - 4.5 Stars:
Tremendous taste prevents Holland from making unsatisfying music. He is a great leader in the truest senses of the word - he gives his team space, trusts their abilities and judgment, yet all the while remains firmly in command and infuses the results with his own style and personality. Prime Directive is a wonderful jazz album. These 77 minutes and nine tracks do not cheat or disappoint. Prime Directive is recommended; a great leader is, indeed, hard to find.

Spirit Fall marks bassist/composer John Patitucci's debut leader album for Edition Records. His sidemen are saxophonist Chris Potter and drummer Brian Blade. The drummer and Patitucci were members of the Wayne Shorter Quartet, and the late saxophonist/composer was a tremendous influence on Potter. Nine of the set's ten tracks were composed by the bassist, and he includes a cover of Shorter's "House of Jade." Spirit Fall is a deeply personal project for Patitucci, reflecting his commitment to music that has the power to uplift and often bridge societal and cultural divides. Patitucci desires connecting with family and friends naturally, but also, and especially, people on the margins. The album draws inspiration from the rich tradition of New York saxophone trio music, reflecting the influence of Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, and Joe Lovano's Trio Fascination.
Opener "Think Fast" is a delightful meld of organic groove from the bassist and Blade as Potter moves through folk themes in a post-bop language. It's Patitucci's inventive, swinging solo that steals the show. "Pole Star" commences as a midtempo modal finger-popper. Potter sets up as the rhythm section engage directly with one another. His sax solo follows and builds on harmony and dynamic before an understated bass solo syncopates the melody. The bassist introduces a blues walk titled "Deluge on 7th Ave," which languidly pursues a funky soul-jazz groove until Potter begins to break free, crossing post-bop, modal blues, and neo-bop as the rhythm section erects a ledge underneath. Patitucci uses his electric bass like a guitar on the title track, creating a droning modal jam that Blade takes apart with double- and triple-timed flourishes before reconstructing the groove as Potter solos on soprano, invoking the spirits of John Coltrane and Steve Lacy. "Lipím" is Cameroonian for "hope." Using an electric bass, Patitucci and Blade deliver lithe, syncopated funk while Potter offers a melody derived from township jazz; it's complex yet nearly hummable. The reading of Shorter's "House of Jade" manages to infuse it with a dynamic, noirish blues vibe inside modal hard bop. In the slightly more abstract "Light in the Darkness" the harmony channels a chamber group. While the bassist leads, Potter deciphers the mysterious melodic code, leading the other players toward improvisation without sacrificing the blues feel. Closer "Sonrisa" melds Caribbean and Afro-Latin rhythms in a joyous, carnivalesque melody that is also almost hummable. The musicians come off sounding like a crack band playing in the street. It contains killer solos from Potter, Patitucci, and amazing rhythmic invention from Blade, who pushes them ever further onto the cliff. While Spirit Fall is a diverse modern jazz recording, its roots lie deep in several musical traditions and international folk forms. Taken as a whole, the album reveals the sax/bass/drums trio has plenty of room for exploration and discovery, as its fine tunes provide a balm for the soul in deeply troubled times.

Working with drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Dave Holland, and guitarist John Scofield, saxophonist Chris Potter recorded his most adventurous record to date with Unspoken. Although his powerhouse rhythm section sometimes overwhelms him, Potter flexes more creative muscle throughout Unspoken, resulting in an engaging, frequently provocative listen.

Adam Rogers' third Criss Cross CD as a leader focuses exclusively on his challenging original works. Joining the guitarist are four superb musicians: tenor saxophonist Chris Potter, pianist Edward Simon, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Clarence Penn. The many twists within the opener, "Labyrinth," are finessed with ease by the group, while Rogers adds a bit of distortion to his instrument for the intense "Tyranny of Fixed Numbers." The extended workout of "The Maya" is built upon an ostinato bass pattern, with Rogers and Potter playing in unison until the piece opens up and the bassist's role is freed; then the leader works his magic with an inventive solo. "Apparitions" is truly a haunting melody as Rogers and Potter introduce the theme, with Penn gradually adding background percussion. The finale, "Moment in Time," is an intriguing low-key ballad, omitting the piano and tenor sax, while Colley (a veteran of guitarist Jim Hall's trio) responds to the stripped-down setting with some of his best work of the session. Highly recommended.

Pianist Joey Alexander was never going to spend his life churning out standards. You could tell from his reimagined version of "Giant Steps," the first track on his 2015 debut album, which begins with a dazzling two-minute solo introduction. The same album also features an original tune, the prowling "Ma Blues." It was clearly only going to be a matter of time before he came up with an all-originals album, and so it is with this, his sixth outing. Meanwhile he has moved to Detroit's Mack Avenue label, whose roster includes other young, like-minded pianists including Christian Sands and Aaron Diehl.
Just turned 19, but way beyond needing to prove himself, Alexander demonstrates a growing emotional maturity that has added depth to his playing and thoughtfulness to his compositions: Cases in point: the meditative "Midnight Waves" or the ballad "Hesitation," with its serene pentatonic melody and Keith Jarrett-like warmth and sweetness.
Musical continuity is present in the shape of long-time collaborators Larry Grenadier on bass and Kendrick Scott on drums. On a few tracks the trio is augmented by Gilad Hekselman on guitar and/or the ubiquitous Chris Potter on tenor or soprano sax. Both appear on "Winter Blues" (part of a mini-suite on a seasonal theme) and "Rise Up." The former is a strutting, syncopated waltz that sees Alexander switch to Fender Rhodes while his guests play the melody in unison; the latter is essentially a funk tune, but so rhythmically complex that it defies attempts at foot-tapping. You can also sometimes hear what he's been listening to: the melody of "Angel Eyes" (a new song, not the standard) hints at "I've Never Been in Love Before."
The best thing about Origin is that for all its accessibility; you never feel you have quite heard everything it has to offer, hence the repeated plays.

I've Never Been in Love Before".

Guitarist Adam Rogers returns with Sight, an album that continues his exploration of heady originals and standards, in the trio format that, with Time and the Infinite (Criss Cross, 2007), took a left-turn from his earlier quartet and quintet records.
Surrounded by friends old and new on Time, with Sight Rogers returns to longtime drummer Clarence Penn after that brief hiatus. John Patitucci may replace equally longtime bassist Scott Colley, but they're hardly new acquaintances. Rogers spent plenty of time with Patitucci in the studio and on the road with the late Michael Brecker's Quindectet project, Wide Angles (Verve, 2003), resulting in a trio chemistry here that possesses both that wonderful "first encounter" energy, and no shortage of established empathy between the individual players. That best of both worlds makes Sight an improvement over the undeniably fine Time.
As meticulous here as in his sideman stint with saxophonist Chris Potter's Underground on Ultrahang (ArtistShare, 2009), in the director's chair Rogers is more decidedly cerebral, with often knotty and unpredictable compositions and arrangements. That doesn't mean a lack of resonance, however. Rogers' title track grooves mightily, a modal tune that opens with a vamp which could easily ratchet into the red zone were it not for the same dark, warm, and woody tone that largely defines Rogers playing throughout the disc, the one exception being his fairly literal look at the balladic standard "Beautiful Love," that Rogers makes his own on nylon-string guitar.
After emerging as a chops-meister in the 1980s with Chick Corea's Akoustic and Elektric bands, Patitucci has evolved into one of his generation's most important bassists. His work in Wayne Shorter's nearly decade-old quartet has contributed to the revitalization of the legendary saxophonist/composer's career, and he brings a similar telepathic elasticity to Rogers' trio. He constantly juggles the role of anchor with that of lyrical foil, and while he clearly still has chops to burn it's never in service of anything but the music. The near-classicism of Rogers' "Kaleidoscope" finds Patitucci acting as contrapuntal partner and harmonic focus for Rogers, whose lithe, graceful lines weave in and out of this ethereal composition with the increasing confidence that's marked the guitarist's trajectory for two decades.
Penn engenders loyalty, whether with Rogers or trumpeter Dave Douglas, in whose electro-acoustic quintet he's held the drum seat since inception nine years ago. Here he creates a stable but flexible pulse to Rogers' complex rhythmic, harmonic, and temporal rearrangement of Jerome Kern's "Yesterdays" and a more faithful version of Woody Shaw's enduring "The Moontrane," the latter a song that—with brass removed and guitar its primary melodic and chordal instrument—still swings, but with in a lighter, more open-ended fashion.
When compared to Kurt Rosenwinkel's standards-heavy Reflections (Wommusic, 2009), Sight is a more challenging and overtly virtuosic look at music that spans decades. For a younger generation of players, it's clear that music at the very foundation of jazz continues to provide inspiration for ultra-modern exploration.
