Philip Catherine has been on the forefront of the European jazz scene since the sixties and worked with great artists like Chet Baker, Stéphane Grappelli, Charlie Mingus and Dexter Gordon. His unique approach and sound, his dedication to music have been important and influential, and today he is a source of inspiration for many artists of the new generation.

Born in London in 1942 and being from a musical family, he developed a musical ear from an early age. When he was 18 he already toured Europe with Lou Bennett. With his recordings “September Man” and “Guitars” in the mid-seventies, jazz amateurs all over the world discovered not only a brilliant guitarist but also a talented composer: themes like “Homecomings” and “Nairam” have become famous.

Philip Catherine has played in the most prestigious concert halls, from the Berlin Philharmonic to the Carnegie Hall, from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam to the Olympia and Salle Pleyel in Paris and the Palais des Beaux-Arts of Brussels.

About the solo album “Guitars Two” (2008, Dreyfus Jazz) the magazine Guitarist Acoustic wrote : “simply one of the most beautiful cd’s of this year”. The CD “Concert in CapBreton” (2010, Dreyfus Jazz) is a magic live recording with an all star line up featuring Enrico Pieranunzi, Hein Van de Geyn and Joe LaBarbera. “Philip Catherine plays Cole Porter” - in Quartet with Karel Boehlee (p), Philippe Aerts (b) and Martijn Vink (dr) - was released in 2011 on Challenge Records and received among others the CHOC in JazzMag.

Philip Catherine celebrated his 70th birthday in October 2012 with a memorable anniversary concert at the Brussels Palais des Beaux-Arts and a new CD. “Coté Jardin” (11/2012, Challenge Records) was recorded with his new quartet : great italian pianist Nicola Andrioli, young drum phenomenon Antoine Pierre and longstanding companion Philippe Aerts on bass, and enchants both jazz fans and classical music lovers.

In january 2014 the album ‘New Folks’ was released on ACT Music, a duo recording with German bassplayer Martin Wind, followed by several tours throughout Europe and the US.

The première of Philip Catherine's 'String project', a selection of his compositions in arrangements with string orchestra, took place on 13.01.2015 at Flagey/Brussels. Philip's quintet, together with the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie conducted by Frank Braley, gave a sublime concert for a full house. The performance was filmed by national TV VRT-Canvas, and a selection was released on CD in September 2015 on ACT Music : “The String Project – Live in Brussels”. R.Garszczyński wrote in JazzPress : “This is one of the best jazz recordings with strings of all times.”

In May 2016 Philip received the ECHO JAZZ AWARD 2016 'Best international guitarist' in Hamburg/Germany, with this album.

Philip Catherine will celebrate his 75th birthday in the autumn 2017. For this occasion WARNER Music France prepares a special 5-CD Box : the long awaited re-release of his early vinyl records 'September Man' and 'Guitars', the albums 'Babel' and 'End of August', completed with an unedited solo recording by Radio Bremen of 1979 & 1982.

Philip Catherine continues relentlessly and open-minded his search for renewal and perfection. The formulas with which he performs give him the rhythmic support and freedom to unfold his wide palette of musical styles, from that irresistible groovy rock sound to the broad lyrical phrases of which he is a master.

Enrico Pieranunzi has been a popular guest in Copenhagen for over 30 years, where he has played with elite Danish musicians like Mads Vinding, Alex Riel and Jesper Lundgaard. In recent years he has collaborated closely in a duo context with the phenomenal bassist Thomas Fonnesbæk and the two, together, were soon able to achieve new heights of creativity.
Pieranunzi is an exceptional pianist, whether he’s playing solo, duo or trio. Melodically, harmonically, and not least of all rhythmically, he is “out of this world”. He has something you simply don’t hear with other musicians. Part of the explanation is likely due to a unique combination of influences, from his deep roots in classical and Italian music to his collaboration with iconic film composer Ennio Morricone and jazz giants like Chet Baker and Art Farmer. The rest – and most importantly – is due to Enrico himself.
On this recording, from December 1996 at the legendary and now closed Copenhagen Jazzhouse, he is joined by two masters in their own right; Marc Johnson on bass and Paul Motian on drums. This trio plays with virtuosity and force that shines through on every note and beat.
The album opens with the tempo filled track Abacus, written by Motian. A track that has a playfulness and displays the three musicians’ genuine interaction and functions as a conversation between the piano and bass. Both the technique as well as feel is top-level as the musical resources are in free flow. The Night Gone By, written by Pieranunzie, starts with more of a ballad feel before a bass solo transcends the track into a higher tempo midway lead by the piano, before coming back to its initial softer feel at the end. Album closer Pannonica, a Thelonius Monk penned classic, has more of a swing feel to it, has more of a swing feel to it and closes the album in style.
Pieranunzi, the Italian piano master, is recognized as one of the best European jazz pianists and as a pianist, composer and arranger he has recorded more than 70 albums.

Pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, in a trio with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron, explores ten songs from movies scored by Italian film composer Ennio Morricone. While none of the pieces are standards, the ten that were chosen are each easily adaptable to jazz. Ranging from romps to waltzes and mood pieces, the music is (not too surprisingly) often cinematic and episodic, but the songs fare well standing independent of the films. Several of the pieces deserve to be covered by other jazz musicians looking for fresh material. While Pieranunzi is the lead voice, Johnson and Baron make important contributions to the swinging music. Recommended.

About the album
Classical/pop, rock/classical, classical/jazz, fusion: the list of possible crossovers can get very long. What all these couplings have in common is the desire to blend two or more different languages. It is a bit like triggering a chemical reaction, the outcome of which no longer has anything to do with the original components of the reaction itself. In the more specific field of jazz/classical music crossover, the 1920s were crucial. In fact, they gave us one of the first, absolutely extraordinary, works of the genre: the famous “Rhapsody in Blue.” In this masterpiece, Gershwin achieved exceptional results thanks to his merging of elements from American popular music, particularly the blues, with others typical of the European classic tradition.

John Lewis moved in the same direction as Gershwin, but from a very different vision and experience. Indeed, Lewis was an excellent jazz pianist (it’s enough to think of his collaborations with Charlie Parker and Miles Davis) where Gershwin, who was also a phenomenal pianist and very well-versed in the jazz of his time, was strictly speaking never a full-time jazz pianist. But above all Lewis, besides being a great jazz player, was deeply in love with the music of Bach and from the earliest years of his career onward made the blues/Bach pair the banner of his artistic life. The Modern Jazz Quartet, which he founded in 1952 – for nearly half a century one of the most celebrated groups on the international jazz scene was the unmistakable vehicle of his musical conception and the real workshop of his highly original crossover.

It is to this musical conception and to the compositional art of John Lewis that, a little more than two decades after his passing, “Blues and Bach” wishes to pay tribute. His tunes have been reworked and orchestrated for the occasion with an ensemble that, in some ways, is itself a crossover within a crossover (jazz trio plus string quintet and woodwind quintet).

As a final thought, we would like to add that “Blues and Bach” is a kind of documentation in music of our two musical biographies. Indeed, encountering blues and Bach were fundamental experiences for both of us, and it is precisely thanks to John Lewis’ dream of blending two musical worlds so far apart that these experiences have been happily brought together here.

Enrico Pieranunzi es uno de los mejores pianistas italianos de jazz que se ha embarca en los más diversos proyectos que van desde sus propios trabajos como líder hasta discos donde se rinde homenaje a algún jazzman de renombre, caso del dedicado al contrabajista Charlie Haden.

‘Blues & Bach – The Music of John Lewis’ entra de llena en esta última categoría, ya que es un disco dedicado al más clásico de los miembros del Modern Jazz Quartet (MJA), el pianista John Lewis, un hombre que a lo largo de su carrera demostró su amor por los compositores clásicos, sobremanera Juan Sebastian Bach, y de ahí el título de este disco.

De hecho, la ambición de John Lewis era realizar lograr una síntesis del blues con Bach. Ahí está para demostrarlo ‘Blues On Bach’ (1974) del MJQ.

Pero vayamos con Enrico Pieranunzi que para llevar a buen puerto este álbum se ha rodeado, además de por su trío habitual con el contrabajista Luca Bulgarelli y el baterísta Mauro Beggio, por la Orquesta Filarmónica Italiana que ofrece ese necesario contrapunto clásico.

Excepto ‘Autumn In New York’ de Vernon Duke, que apareció en el disco de debut del MJQ, el resto de los temas –siete en total-, fueron escritas por John Lewis para el cuarteto del cual formó parte.

Entre las composiciones elegidas hay clásicos del jazz como ‘Skating In Central Park’, ‘Django’ y ‘Concorde’, pero también se presenta alguna pieza más desconocida de Lewis como ‘Jasmine Tree’.

Aunque ha tardado varios años en llegar a su conclusión este proyecto, desde que se puso en marcha en el año 2018, lo cierto es que el resultado final está a la altura de los participantes.

This CD has a very special meaning for me. Remembering Chet takes me back to 1979 when I first met him. That meeting would soon prove to be a turning point in my musical life. Playing together, sharing concerts or recording sessions with him allowed me to be in close contact with an artist of rare jazz experience who caused an enormous change in my playing. Many of the tunes on this CD come from those important years of collaboration. Among them are Soft Journey, Fairy Flowers and Brown Cat Dance, which I composed expressly for Chet and which, like Night bird, are included in “Soft Journey”, recorded at the end of 1979, just after our first meeting. The opening track, From E. to C., as the title clearly suggests, is a dedication to Chet and also dates to our first period of collaboration, whereas Echoes was recorded later in 1987, as a part of “Silence,” a CD under Charlie Haden’s name.

There is, however, much else that deserves to be highlighted on this CD. For instance, the fact that “Chet Remembered” was conceived and realized in tandem with Bert Joris, a wonderful trumpet player in whose playing there are clear traces of Chet’s style, reworked in a very personal way. I can say that, although we play different instruments, Chet’s influence has determined a sort of stylistic “brotherhood” in our approach to improvisation, an affinity that is one of the distinctive elements of this CD. The dual role that Bert plays on this CD also deserves to be emphasised. Along with Bert Joris as a great trumpet player, Bert Joris also in fact appears here as an outstanding arranger. His ability to work with the melodic cells of the pieces, making them the basis of unpredictable melodic-rhythmic developments, is fantastic. And I find his ability to take full advantage of the palette of colors offered by the big band very impressive. Among the countless, excellent examples of his latter quality I would like to highlight here the harmonisation and orchestration of the solo on Soft Journey, which Chet improvised on the 1979 album of the same name (track 4, between 2’03” and 3’43”). A typical, wonderfully melodic Chet solo that I personally transcribed a few hours after Chet had improvised and recorded it. After so many years, it is so nice to listen to this solo here in the lush, refined big band version set up by Bert. Definitely a fine way to remember and honour Chet’s improvisational mastery.

Of course, this tribute to our mutual mentor could not have been accomplished in such an original and effective way without the contribution of the magnificent HR Big Band and its musicians, to all of whom I’d like to address my sincerest thanks. The days spent with them in the Frankfurt studios while recording this CD were most enjoyable and full of exciting musical moments.

A final special thanks to Challenge for enthusiastically accepting the release of this project that is designed to remember and celebrate the art of one of the purest talents in the history of jazz.

Este CD tiene un significado muy especial para mí. Recordar a Chet me retrotrae a 1979, cuando le conocí. Aquel encuentro pronto resultaría ser un punto de inflexión en mi vida musical. Tocar juntos, compartir conciertos o sesiones de grabación con él me permitió estar en estrecho contacto con un artista de rara experiencia jazzística que provocó un enorme cambio en mi forma de tocar. Muchos de los temas de este CD proceden de aquellos importantes años de colaboración. Entre ellas están Soft Journey, Fairy Flowers y Brown Cat Dance, que compuse expresamente para Chet y que, al igual que Night bird, están incluidas en "Soft Journey", grabado a finales de 1979, justo después de nuestro primer encuentro. El tema de apertura, From E. to C., como sugiere claramente el título, es una dedicatoria a Chet y también data de nuestro primer periodo de colaboración, mientras que Echoes se grabó más tarde, en 1987, como parte de "Silence", un CD a nombre de Charlie Haden.
