Roby Lakatos And His Ensemble • As Time Goes By

Review from MusicWeb International: Roby Lakatos is descended from János Bihari, the celebrated violinist and this compilation of movie themes gets the genuine gypsy treatment with full-blooded interpretations of pieces such as the titular 'As Time Goes By' from Casablanca (1942) and 'If I were a Rich Man' from Fiddler on the Roof. The selections that work best though are those where Lakatos takes centre stage with his expressive violin playing, particularly on the two Morricone tracks, 'Poverty' and 'Deborah's Theme' from Once Upon a Time in America (1984). An agreeable collection, performed with aplomb, that should entertain most and will especially appeal to those who gravitate towards the colour and energy of gypsy music. http://www.musicweb-international.com/film/2002/nov02/lakatos_as_time_goes_by.html

Ray Nance • Body And Soul

///////

 Ray was not only cool but also trumpeter and singer. This album is his role with the violin of 1969.

Review by Ken Dryden
This is a very unusual date by Ray Nance, as he sticks exclusively to violin with an occasional vocal. Accompanied by either Jaki Byard or Roland Hanna on piano, the shifting supporting cast also includes guitarists Tiny Grimes and Tommy Lucas, and tenor saxophonist Brew Moore. Nance swings like mad through "Get Happy" with some hot licks from Grimes and Lucas, and delivers a poignant "Body and Soul" in a duet with Hanna. Some of the pop tunes from the 1960s fare less well, especially the rather monotonous "Sunny" and an uninspired arrangement of the gospel tune "Oh Happy Day." The two tracks from the Duke Ellington-Billy Strayhorn songbook are the album's highlights. "Guitar Amour" (which strangely omitted guitar in the many renditions of it by Ellington) has a gypsy flavor. But the masterpiece of this long unavailable LP is Nance's dirge-like duet with Hanna of "Take the 'A' Train" (which Nance had earlier performed at Strayhorn's memorial service); it is difficult not to be moved by this emotional arrangement, which contrasts starkly with typical recordings of it.

///////

Ara Malikian y Fernando Egozcue Quinteto • Con Los Ojos Cerrados

///////

In 1998, during one of Ara Malikian’s tours in Spain, destiny made that the virtuoso violinist Malikian met Fernando Egozcue and his captivating music. Since then many things have happened, many shared music, many concerts and a natural understanding which is today the expression of the same feeling, deep and mature.

It has a lot to do with this Moisés P. Sánchez, probably the best jazz pianist in Spain nowadays, who oozes creativity, professionalism and good deeds at every step; Miguel Rodrigáñez, elegant double-bass player who combines a polished classic bow with the presence and rhythmic of folk musics and Martin Bruhn, multifaceted and exquisite percussionist who joins the music with the most natural thing.

Roby Lakatos • Gypsy violin virtuoso

///////

Roby Lakatos is a Romani (Gypsy) violinist from Hungary. He is renowned for his mix of classical music with Hungarian Romani music and jazz themes.

Romani violinist Roby Lakatos is not only a scorching virtuoso, but a musician of extraordinary stylistic versatility.[citation needed] Equally comfortable performing classical music as he is playing jazz and his own Hungarian folk idiom, Lakatos is the rare musician who defies definition. He is referred to as a gypsy violinist or ‘devil’s fiddler’, a classical virtuoso, a jazz improviser, a composer and arranger, and a 19th-century throwback, and he is actually all of these things at once. He is the kind of universal musician so rarely encountered in our time—a player whose strength as an interpreter derives from his activities as an improviser and composer. He has performed in the great halls and festivals of Europe, Asia and America.

Born in 1965 into the legendary family of Romani violinists descended from János Bihari, ‘King of Gypsy Violinists’, Roby Lakatos was introduced to music as a child and at the age of nine he made his public debut as first violin in a Romani band. His musicianship evolved not only within his own family but also at the Béla Bartók Conservatory of Budapest, where he won the first prize for classical violin in 1984. Between 1986 and 1996, he and his ensemble delighted audiences at the restaurant ‘Les Atéliers de la Grande Ille’ in Brussels, their musical home throughout this period. He has collaborated with Vadim Repin and Stéphane Grappelli, and his playing was greatly admired by Sir Yehudi Menuhin, who always made a point of visiting the place to hear Lakatos. In March 2004, Lakatos appeared to great acclaim with the London Symphony Orchestra in the orchestra’s ‘Genius of the Violin’ festival alongside Maxim Vengerov.

When Roby Lakatos mixes so-called ‘classical music’ with the magic of Hungarian-gypsy vitality, it is not disrespectful toward the classical tradition, but it reflects the deep tradition rooted in the cultural heritage of the Romani people and offers new, refreshing pleasures to the listener and music lover. And just as Liszt, Brahms and others used Hungarian overtones in their compositions, so now the public profits from the reuniting of these classics with their Romani roots. This enlivens all those men and women in whose veins still pulses at least a little bit of the blood of the wandering spirit.

Roby Lakatos has released five albums for avanticlassic to date: Prokofiev project with Polina Leschenko, Christian Poltéra and Martha Argerich; Fire Dance; Klezmer Karma with the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, Yiddish singer Myriam Fuks and accordionist Aldo Granato and; Roby Lakatos with Musical Friends with Stéphane Grappelli, Vadim Repin, Randy Brecker, Tony Lakatos - his brother and established jazz musician in his own right, Marc Fosset and the Vieuxtemps Quartet. La Passion live at Sydney Opera House.

John Daly • Traditional Irish Fiddle

A native of Cork, fiddle player John Daly now lives in Chicago where he performs about town and often anchors the sessions at the famous Abbey pub. This is where I myself first met John, and had a wonderful time playing with him and discovering on the go his inventive style of variation. John confessed almost apologetically that it wasn't to everybody's taste, but I have always been fascinated by that aspect of traditional playing, and could not get enough. John seems to have kept that penchant somewhat in check on this, his first solo album, and the music is a little more tame than my "live" experience had made me expect. Not that the album is in any way boring, quite the opposite. The influences on John's style of playing are diverse, from the music of Co. Leitrim and Fermanagh which he was exposed to while living in Co. Cavan, to the air playing of the great Shetland fiddle master Willie Hunter. These diverse influences reflect on the repertoire chosen for this album, including quite a few tunes penned by John himself, and on the manner in which it is performed, to give great variety to the whole. John is accompanied on piano by several well-known players, including Marty Fahey, Kevin Brehony (Sligo), and Davie Keith (Shetland), and is joined on a couple of airs by violin and viola player Liz Knowles.

Stephane Grappelli • Live At Corby Festival Hall

Stephane Grappelli recorded frequently during the last three decades of his life and previously unissued recordings like this 1975 concert at Corby Festival Hall have continued to turn up. On this occasion the violinist is accompanied by lead guitarist Diz Disley, rhythm guitarist Ike Isaacs and bassist David Moses. The set is fairly typical, concentrating on standards from the 1920s through the 1940s, starting with a chugging but brisk take of "I Can't Believe That You're in Love With Me." The marvelous duet by Grappelli and Disley of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," Grappelli's inventive treatment of "(Back Home Again In) Indiana" and the crowd-pleasing "Sweet Georgia Brown" are among the highlights. It is simply amazing that Stephane Grappelli never seemed to go on autopilot as he played a song for the hundredth (or possibly thousandth) time; this CD is a valuable addition to his already vast discography.

Stephane Grappelli • Planet Jazz

Biography
Stephane Grappelli (originally surname was spelled with a 'Y') would have earned himself a place in Jazz History books if only for his important role in the Quintette of the Hot Club of France, featuring the dazzling virtuosity of Django Reindhart. Grappelli's violin was the perfect foil to Reindhart's guitar in this piano-less group.
Fired by Reindhart's tremendous rhythmic powers, Grappelli's contributions to recordings by the Quintette like Lime House Blues, China Boy and It Don't Mean A Thing (all 1935) and Them There Eyes, Three little Words and Swing '39 (these latter three tracks from 1938-39) were admirable in their execution.
Occasionally Grappelli would play piano, as when harmonica virtuoso Larry Adler recorded with the group in 1939, the year when Reindhart and Grappelli, violin, recorded (with delightful results) as a duo (all Django Reindhart).
Grappelli born (1908) and raised in Paris was involved with music at a very early age. By 12 years, he had acquired his first violin- just one of several instruments he learned to play. He began professionally with theatre bands, eventually being introduced to jazz music. A French jazz musician, Philippe Brun, introduced Grappelli to Reindhart. Soon after that meeting they put the idea of Quintette into practice.
When World War II commenced, Grappelli and the band were touring Britain. While the others returned to Paris Grappelli decided to stay. During the next six years he became a popular figure in London with habitues of nightlife in general and in musical entertainment in particular, working with local musicians in the local clubs. In 1946, he returned to Paris, renewed association with Reindhart, but he magic of pre-war days did not re-appear too often. Between 1948-55 worked in Club Saint Germain, Paris, and in the latter year played nine-month residency in St. Tropez.
During the '70s Grappelli has played throughout Europe, in Clubs, concerts and festivals, has and broadcast televised extensively, and has been a regular visitor to the recording studio.
In 1966, Grappelli was recorded in concert in Switzerland, together with fellow jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, Stuff Smith and Svend Asmussen (Violin Summit). Since then he has recorded frequently in London. A live date at the Queen Elizabeth Hall (Stephane Grappelli 1972) finds him responding to an enthusiastic audience. Elsewhere he has recorded with much success, with Americans Gary Burton (Paris Encounter), Bill Coleman (Stephane Grappelli-Bill Coleman), Roland Hanna, (Stephane Grappelli Meets he Rhythm Section) and Barney Kessel (I Remember Django).

Svend Asmussen • Makin Whoopee! ...and Music!

Review by Ken Dryden
Although Svend Asmussen should be considered as one of the titans of jazz violin, he still isn't as widely known as Stuff Smith, Stéphane Grappelli, or Jean-Luc Ponty, likely in part because he hasn't toured as widely as the others, with most of his performing and recording taking place in Europe. But the spry Danish veteran, who recorded these sessions in the weeks prior to his 93rd birthday in the winter of 2009, has been the elder statesman of his instrument since the death of Grappelli. His superb rhythm section consists of pianist/organist/bassist Richard Drexler, guitarist Jacob Fischer (whose name was omitted from the credits on the back cover), and drummer Tony Martin. Many of the pieces are standards that have been in his repertoire for decades, including fun-filled treatments of "Makin' Whoopee" and "There Will Never Be Another You." The joyful "Singin' in the Rain" has Drexler simulating raindrops with a catchy vamp in the upper end of the piano as the leader offers his light-hearted solo, while Asmussen's lyrical setting of "Skylark" is sentimental without being syrupy. There are also timeless jazz pieces like the strutting rendition of "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" and a brilliant "Nuages" showcasing both Asmussen and Fischer. The violinist penned a pair of originals, highlighted by the soulful "Sermon for Stuff" (a tribute to the great violinist Stuff Smith, with whom he worked on numerous occasions after Smith moved to Denmark), with Drexler's gospel-infused organ and piano backing him. Perhaps this rare opportunity to hear Svend Asmussen on an American release will open a few more recording opportunities during the violinist's golden years. Highly recommended!

There Will Never Another Another You".

Regina Carter • I'll Be Seeing You

Review / TROY COLLINS, Published: June 6, 2006
Regina Carter dedicated I'll Be Seeing You to her mother, who recently passed away. In the process of recording this disc as both loving tribute and musical therapy, Carter followed the advice of arranger John Clayton, working through a set of tunes culled from her mother's youth. The results are wistfully nostalgic and viable in their commemoration.

The violinist has recorded in a number of configurations and styles, from duets with pianist Kenny Barron on Freefall (Verve, 2001) to full orchestra on Paganini: After a Dream (Verve, 2003). This session finds her in an intimate, stripped-down format. Her regular piano/bass/drums rhythm section is occasionally augmented by Paquito D'Rivera (clarinet) and Gil Goldstein (accordion). Their sumptuous contributions add an air of authenticity to this program of Great American Songbook standards and early swing tunes.

Dee Dee Bridgewater and Carla Cook lend their vocal talents to a few numbers. Cook's bluesy inflection on "St. Louis Blues" and Bridgewater's lively scat solo on "This Can't Be Love" are highlights. Both are giants in their fields, and Carter couldn't have asked for better interpreters for this material.

Carter's discography is a textbook example of the varied experiences from which modern jazz musicians draw inspiration. She was once a member of the String Trio of New York and has accompanied such independent thinkers as James Carter, Mark Helias and Steve Turre. While there is nothing overtly avant-garde on I'll Be Seeing You, the recording definitely manifests a sense of playfulness. She adds uplifting Bachian invention to "Little Brown Jug" and swings John Kirby's arrangement of Edvard Grieg's "Anitra's Dance" with an infectious energy worthy of Raymond Scott. Her buoyant, extended interpretation of "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" features a string of solos for the whole group.

The violinist is in excellent form throughout, soaring with lyrical panache on the swing tunes, grinding away blissfully on the blues numbers, and revealing a tender, dulcet side on the ballads, with a somber take on the titular closing track. Despite the context, the album never drifts into maudlin territory. Simultaneously celebratory and reverent, I'll Be Seeing You is a fitting tribute to Grace Louise Carter.

 Reseña / TROY COLLINS, Publicado: 6 de junio de 2006
Regina Carter dedicó "I'll Be Seeing You" a su madre, recientemente fallecida.

Simultáneamente celebratorio y reverente, I'll Be Seeing You es un tributo adecuado a Grace Louise Carter.

Faux Frenchmen • Faux Frenchmen

The Faux Frenchmen are acoustic guitarists Brian Lovely and George Cunningham, acoustic bassist Don Aren, and violinist Paul Patterson. They’ve played Hot Club-driven gypsy jazz in and around Cincinnati and the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. since 2002.

Guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli fronted the Quintette of the Hot Club of France in and around Paris from 1934 to 1939, and constituted the first generation of European jazz musicians. The Hot Club blended backgrounds in traditional gypsy and European popular and classical music with the then-new sounds of American jazz artists like Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong , Fats Waller, and Benny Goodman to create a new musical genre, now often called "gypsy jazz."
The Faux Frenchmen adapt the Hot Club’s instrumentation and style in forging their own re-Americanized take on gypsy jazz. Their four CD releases, Faux Frenchmen (2007), Oblivion (2008), The Swing Shift (2010), and 3am Waltz (2011) bend the relationship between American and European jazz, utilizing elements of both to create a distinctive stylistic voice.
