Kjeld Lauritsen • In the Zone

Kjeld Lauritsen Hammond Organ Kjeld Lauritsen is one of the few remaining jazz organ players, who plays the big Hammond Org an with rotating leslie speakers and bass pedals. In his younger days he was a profile on the danish blues scene, which gave him a background similar to many of the original organ grinders. When he started his own jazz combo – The Organizers – with Bob Rockwell on saxophone, succes came immediately. 7 CDs with this group, 3 under his own name and 2 records with big-bands followed. In 2011 he released a CD with a 7-piece band playing homegrown compositions from jazz and blues to beyond. The title of this group is Hammond Organ 7. The Press wrote: “Who ever thinks of North European people thinks of cool people, the counterpart of Mediterranian people. But you did not know Kjeld Lauritsen, the hot jazz man at the Hammond. May be his attitude is friendly and restrained but you will experience a total different music: swinging, cooking, just a very active asset of the Danish jazz scene”. – Jürgen Wolf, http://www.iajo.org/ “Only very few people can play jazz on organ, but in Denmark we have a master Kjeld showed his excellent skills as an organplayer, that covers ground from the massive and agressive to the very subtle, underlined by his foot pedal playing. He is really fantastic at playing bass with his feet.” (from Aarhus Jazzfestival 2009) ”Hammond Time!” is a wonderful record that just makes you happy. It really swings, and Kjeld lift the heritage from great people like Jimmy McGriff in a sublime way.”

Kjeld Lauritsen • Learning to Smile

Review from Jazznyt (by Niels Overgård) [original text in Danish]:

Kjeld Lauritsen • Hammond Organ 7

Description from Kjeld Lauritsen official website (kjeldlauritsen.dk):
Composing tunes and playing them with my fellow musicians has for a long time been one of the biggest thrills in my musical career. At the same time, I have always enjoyed projects where all members of the group are engaged in the process of writing and arranging the music. Hammond Organ 7 is one of those collaborative efforts. Featuring sax masters Bob Rockwell and Hans Ulrik. New star Peter Marott on trumpet and his mentor Erling Kroner on trombone. First-call guitarist Per Gade and swingin' and inventive drummers Espen Laub and Casper Mikkelsen complete the lineup.

Erling Kroner was my original inspiration for assembling this band. Unfortunately Erling became very ill and was unable to perform and record with us. Determined to put out an album with the original group I decided to use live recordings made before Erling fell ill.

Kjeld Lauritsen, The Organizers ‎• Fontaine Nights

Kjeld Lauritsen is one of the few remaining jazz organ players who plays the big Hammond Organ with rotating leslie speakers and bass pedals.
These two Scandinavian offerings could not be more different or enjoyable. Tenor Saxophonist Anders Gaardmand bar-walks his way through ten B-3-oozing standards in a manner bordering on sentimental schmaltz, but fortunately never quite getting there. La Fontaine Live is the documentation of a Chitlin' Circuit Danish Sinatra singing in front of the Texas Tenor cum Scandinavia of the Gaardmand—(Red) Holloway axis. Old war-horses like "Misty" and "Old Folks" are peppered with the more contemporary fare of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and the Beatles' "Long and Winding Road." Bobo Moreno's vocals are believable, as are Gaardmand's solos. The glue for this disc and the next is organist Kjeld Lauritsen, who single handedly saves Fontaine from being something else altogether. Don't get me wrong; there is nothing wrong with Fontaine. But it is not as serious as The Organizers + 1.
On the Organizers + 1, the standard tenor—organ trio is augmented with the congas of Ethan Weisgard. The music is groovin' and but not too greasy, though the blues are very much in evidence. Eddie Harris' "1974 Blues" is very cool and funky and an antiseptic sort of way. That is to say that this music tend to be more squeeky clean than down and dirty. It is crisp and exciting and should give any organ jazz aficionado a good listen for their money. The cold country of Northern European is indeed the spawning palace of some of the best jazz being made. Generally better known for their big bands, these two recordings show that small Scandinavian groups can function at the very same high standards.  https://www.allaboutjazz.com

Ronnie Cuber • Ronnie Cuber Live At Montmartre

This recording marks the third time Ronnie Cuber has visited Jazzhus Montmarte in Copenhagen, the first time being in 2015 where he played a beautiful concert with Nikolaj Bentzon.
He recalls: ”I noticed Horace Parlan, one of my favorite pianists came in to dig the band. When we finished the set, I announced Horace was in the house and he gave me his famous ear to ear grin. He was living 75 kilometres away from the center of Copenhagen in 2016 and made the trip into the club again a year later. February 2017 he passed away in his beloved Denmark, a few months before my third time playing at Montmartre.”

3 concerts were held, all three of them being recorded by Storryville Records. The line-up consisted of Ronnie Cuber (bars), Kjeld Lauritsen (hamm org), Krister Jonsson (g) and Andreas Svendsen (dr).
Ronnie Cuber is a renowned Jazz Saxophonist, who has played with George Benson, SlideHampton and Maynard Ferguson and outside the jazz world such as Frank Zappa, B.B. King and Eric Clapton.
Cuber remains an active and creative force on the jazz scene to this day, as evidenced by this release, recorded in 2017.

His first recording as a band leader goes back to 1976 and he has been very active since then, both as a band leader and a side-man.

The set list at these shows was mix of well-known classics written both by Cuber as well as other musicians, and includes classics such as Au Privave (Charlie Parker) and Four (Miles Davis) as well as Cubers own tribute to Richard Tee, Tee’s Bag and organist Kjeld Lauritzens Jazz Girls.

///////

Sigurdur Flosason & Kjeld Lauritsen • Daybreak

They used to call this kind of thing "mood music." The idea was to put the listener in a particular mood, usually one of calm and relaxation. When it came to jazz, the US label Prestige climbed on the bandwagon with a whole series titled—wait for it— "Moodsville."

Moodsville aimed at providing jazz that was "beautiful, poetic and thoughtful."

Talented Icelandic alto saxophonist Sigurdur Flosason and Danish Hammond organ player Kjeld Lauritsen have similar aspirations. Lauritsen cites Ben Webster, Jim Hall and Bill Evans as the inspiration for this album.

Flosason says the music has nothing to prove. "It simply is, neither old nor new, complex nor simple. In a way it is the core and the essence of all music: rhythm, melody and harmony in their barest and truest form—just music."

"The Night We Called It A Day..." "Blue Moon..." "Dreamsville..." One dreamy ballad follows another until, with Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin,'" the sun finally rises.

Two numbers stand out, both by Duke Ellington. "I Like The Sunrise" was part of his "Liberian Suite," written in 1947 to celebrate the African nation's centennial. It was originally furnished with trite lyrics sung in his inimitably pompous way by Al Hibbler.

We are spared them here as Flosason breathes new life into one of Ellington's less distinguished tunes, followed by a fine solo with calypso leanings from guitarist Jacob Fischer.

"Morning Glory" was written by Ellington and trumpeter Rex Stewart in 1940 and recorded by the Ellington band just once. After a rather wooden opening by Lauritsen, Flosason and Fischer deliver excellent solos.

Sandwiched between the two pieces of Ellingtonia is a very nice version of the Sigmund Romberg/Oscar Hammerstein number "Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise" from 1928.

Again, the organ intro is a trifle stolid but Flosason quickly lifts the number and Lauritsen redeems himself with some nicely understated work before close of play.

"The Night We Called It A Day..." "Blue Moon..." "Dreamsville..."
