Cerri was born in Milan and learned to play guitar when he was 17. In 1945 he became a member of the group led by Gorni Kramer and joined the orchestra of the television show Buone vacanze. He played double bass in addition to guitar starting in the 1950s, such as with Chet Baker and Buddy Collette. He has also played with Dizzy Gillespie, Johnny Griffin, Stéphane Grappelli, Lars Gullin, Billie Holiday, Lee Konitz, Gerry Mulligan, Lou Bennett, Bud Shank, Tony Scott, Django Reinhardt, Phil Woods, and the Modern Jazz Quartet. He cited as influences Django Reinhardt, Barney Kessell, and René Thomas.

Cerri has led quartets and quintets with Tullio De Piscopo, Pino Presti, Gianluigi Trovesi, Flavio Ambrosetti, and Jean-Luc Ponty.

In 1980 he formed a duo with pianist Enrico Intra, with whom he founded the “Civica Scuola di Jazz” in Milan.

On 1 January 2006, he was knighted by President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.

Cerri nació en Milán y aprendió a tocar la guitarra a los 17 años. En 1945 pasó a formar parte del grupo dirigido por Gorni Kramer y se incorporó a la orquesta del programa de televisión Buone vacanze. A partir de los años 50 tocó el contrabajo además de la guitarra, por ejemplo con Chet Baker y Buddy Collette. Franco Cerri (born on January 19, 1926 in Milan, Italy, and died on October 18, 2021 in Milan, Italy) was an Italian jazz guitarist and bass player.

Franco Cerri is not only one of the world's most popular and most authoritative Italian guitarists, but is also one of the most important stylists in the European jazz world. He began his long and prolific career in 1945 with Gorni Kramer and in 1949 he accompanied Django Reinhardt. In the 1950's he worked with notable jazz musicians including Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, Billie Holiday and Lee Konitz. He also led modern jazz quartet or quintet and became a leader in the Italian and European jazz world. On 1 January 2006, he was named "Commendatore della Repubblica" (official title awarded for service to Italy) by President of the Italian Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. Father of Stefano Cerri.

Comenzó su larga y prolífica carrera en 1945 con Gorni Kramer y en 1949 acompañó a Django Reinhardt. En la década de 1950 trabajó con notables músicos de jazz como Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, Billie Holiday y Lee Konitz. También dirigió cuartetos o quintetos de jazz moderno y se convirtió en un líder en el mundo del jazz italiano y europeo. El 1 de enero de 2006 fue nombrado «Commendatore della Repubblica» (título oficial concedido por servicios prestados a Italia) por el Presidente de la República Italiana, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
