Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Every
decade has its own retro craze spearheaded by a true believer who
brings classic sounds and styles back into vogue. Brian Setzer performed
this trick not just once but twice: first as the leader of the Stray
Cats, the trio who brought rockabilly back into the charts during the
'80s, and then as a figure who helped popularize the swing revival of
the '90s with the Brian Setzer Orchestra. Both of these sounds were
grounded in the '50s, which is when rockabilly was born, but it was also
the heyday of the kind of jump blues Setzer loved, such as Louis Prima
and Big Joe Turner. While the Stray Cats were purists of sorts, indebted
to the big beat of Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent, as a solo act Setzer
wound up fusing these aesthetics together, playing rockabilly guitar to
a swinging beat. With this jumping sound, he cultivated a loyal
following -- consisting of not a few latter-day disciples -- that
stretched well into the new millennium, developing the long-running,
successful career that many of his idols never had. Though Setzer's
first solo effort, 1986's The Knife Feels Like Justice, was a heartland
rock album, his big step forward came with 1994's The Brian Setzer
Orchestra, where his rockabilly/swing fusion first took hold, and with
1998's The Dirty Boogie, he took that sound to the pop charts. His work
with the Orchestra and the occasional holiday-themed release dominated
his solo career, but he took detours back to rockabilly, most notably on
2005's Rockabilly Riot, Vol. 1: A Tribute to Sun Records and 2021's
Gotta Have the Rumble. 2023's The Devil Always Collects was recorded
with a trio.
While the heroes of rockabilly's golden era -- Eddie
Cochran, Gene Vincent, Elvis, and Carl Perkins -- loom large in
Setzer's oeuvre, as a kid growing up in Long Island he initially fell
for big-band jazz. His first instrument was the euphonium and he played
brass in a variety of jazz bands while in school. He'd sneak into
classic clubs like the Village Vanguard, but he also developed a taste
for blues-rock and punk, which led him down the road to rockabilly.
Picking up a guitar, he formed the Tomcats with drummer Gary Setzer and
Bob Beecher in 1979, the latter was also a bandmate of Brian's in the
Bloodless Pharaohs. As his infatuation with rockabilly intensified,
Setzer devoted himself to the Tomcats, which evolved into the Stray Cats
when bassist Lee Rocker and drummer Slim Jim Phantom entered the lineup
in late 1979.
Sensing the U.S. wasn't quite ready for their rock
& roll, the Stray Cats departed for London in June of 1980, hawking
their instruments to get across the Atlantic. Within a few months, they
earned the attention of roots rocker Dave Edmunds -- who just happened
to appear in the 1973 film That'll Be the Day, playing in a band called
the Stray Cats -- and he took them under his wing, producing their 1981
eponymous debut for Arista. Thanks to the singles "Rock This Town" and
"Stray Cat Strut," the record was a hit; its 1982 sequel, Gonna Ball,
didn't do as well, but highlights from the two LPs were culled for the
American album Built for Speed. Thanks to those aforementioned singles,
which both received heavy MTV airplay, Built for Speed turned the Stray
Cats into stars in the U.S., paving the way for 1983's Rant n Rave with
the Stray Cats, which had another major hit in the form of "(She's) Sexy
+ 17" and a minor one in the form of "I Won't Stand in Your Way."
Success
came to the Stray Cats, but the group fractured in 1984 and Setzer
responded by acting as a sideman for a variety of rockers, most
prominently playing in Robert Plant's oldies band the Honeydrippers on a
tour. Setzer launched a solo career in 1986 with The Knife Feels Like
Justice, a record that found him right in line with the heartland rock
of the mid-'80s but didn't generate any hits and, perhaps
coincidentally, Setzer returned to the Stray Cats' fold that year for
Rock Therapy, a reunion that also failed to stir sales. Next up was
1988's Live Nude Guitars, a record that moved him closer to Stray Cats
territory but also failed to gain an audience. Another reunion with the
Stray Cats followed, one that lasted for three albums over four years.
First was 1989's Blast Off!, which they supported with a tour opening
for Stevie Ray Vaughan, but the record reached no higher than 111 on
Billboard and EMI dropped them in America. Undaunted, they teamed with
Nile Rodgers in 1990 for Let's Go Faster!, a record that appeared on
Liberation to little attention; they then returned to their roots for
1992's Choo Choo Hot Fish, a final album recorded with their original
producer, Dave Edmunds.
This was the last go-round for the Stray
Cats and it was time for a reset for Setzer. He found one with the Brian
Setzer Orchestra, where he refashioned his rockabilly boogie for the
neo-swing era. Their eponymous debut appeared on Hollywood in 1994 and
it did OK on the charts, reaching 158; then corporate restructuring
pushed him over to Interscope Records, which put out Guitar Slinger in
1996. That record failed to chart but it laid the groundwork for 1998's
The Dirty Boogie, which was a smash hit thanks to a hit cover of Louis
Prima's "Jump Jive & Wail." The single peaked at 23 and the record
went all the way to nine on the Billboard 200, and if Setzer never
scaled those heights again -- the 2000 follow-up, Vavoom!, reached 62 --
he nevertheless found his niche and ran with it, releasing all manner
of swinging big-band records in the new millennium, ranging from a
series of Christmas albums (there are at least five seasonal releases in
his discography) to swinging covers of classical compositions (2007's
Wolfgang's Big Night Out), most issued on SurfDog Records. 2004's The
Ultimate Collection: Recorded Live was a solid document of this period; a
two-album set, the first disc featured a show in Montreal from one of
the Setzer Orchestra's early tours, while the second preserved a show in
Japan after the band's commercial breakthrough, previously issued on
its own in 2001 as Jumpin' East of Java: Live in Japan.
At times,
Setzer would step outside of the Orchestra to return to his rockabilly
roots, beginning with 2003's Nitro Burnin' Funny Daddy, running through
Rockabilly Riot, Vol. 1: A Tribute to Sun Records in 2005, and extending
to 2014's Rockabilly Riot! All Original. Another holiday album, Rockin'
Rudolph, showed up in time for the Christmas season of 2015. Setzer
celebrated the 25th anniversary of forming the Brian Setzer Orchestra
with the release of 25 Live!, a limited-edition Record Store Day 45 of
"Gene & Eddie" and "Let There Be Rock," in November 2017. In 2020,
The Ultimate Collection: Recorded Live set from 2004 got a vinyl reissue
in the form of two double-LP sets, with The Ultimate Collection
Recorded Live, Vol. 1 featuring the Montreal concert and The Ultimate
Collection Recorded Live, Vol. 2 containing the Japanese show. In 2021,
Setzer issued his first solo outing in seven years, the rollicking, yet
reflective Gotta Have the Rumble.
He returned to the studio with
co-producer Julian Raymond, mixing engineer Chris Lord-Alge, and a cast
of sidemen; he emerged with The Devil Always Collects. Released in
September 2023, it showcased originals and covers, evidenced by lead
single "Girl on the Billboard," a mid-'60s trucker's anthem closely
associated with Del Reeves. Following its release, Setzer undertook the
Rockabilly Riot Tour with an international trio that included bassist
Australian bassist Chris D’Rozario and drummer Juan Laurios from Mexico
City.

Mientras que The
Records y Gotta Have the Rumble de 2021. The Devil Always Collects de
Gracias a los sencillos "Rock This Town" y
difusión en MTV, Built for Speed convirtió a The Stray Cats en estrellas
en los EE. UU., allanando el camino para Rant n Rave with the Stray
"y uno menor en la forma de" I Won't Stand in Your Way."
productor original, Dave Edmunds.
Billboard 200, y si Setzer nunca volvió a escalar esas alturas the ¡el
cuenta en 2001 como Jumpin' East of Java: Live in Japan.
A veces,
limitada El Día 45 de "Gene & Eddie" y "Let There Be Rock", en
the Rumble.
el ingeniero de mezcla Chris Lord-Alge y un elenco de acompañantes;
surgió con The Devil Always Collects.

Review by AllMusic
Aided by an all-star band, John Abercombie makes it clear on CAT 'N' MOUSE exactly why he continues to be regarded as one of jazz's most creative and progressive guitarists. He's possessed not only of fearsome chops, but a finely honed textural sensibility that enables him to move from the slinky lines and feathery tones of the opening cut "A Nice Idea" to the forward-looking experimentalism of "Convolution" and post-bop firestorm of "Stop and Go" without missing a beat. Yoemanlike work is done as well by violinist Mark Feldman, whose purity of tone is matched only by his ceaseless originality and succinct phrasing. On the album's numerous contemplative tunes, it's a pleasure to hear Abercombie and Feldman's lines cris-crossing, creating spontaneous tone poems that bear beauty and invention in equal measure.

by Richard S. Ginell
George Benson rebels against the machine and comes out with an all-instrumental album, his first in 11 years and also his first full teaming with onetime protégé, acoustic guitarist Earl Klugh. Klugh sounds much more mature and forthcoming here than he did as a teenager in Benson's CTI days. Yet Benson still blows him away with his effortless swing, endless invention (within the constraints of the carefully controlled arrangements, however) and totally assured placement of the notes. "Mimosa" has some especially fluid work by Benson, with Klugh serving as an effective foil. The backing is mostly an electronic wash, though underpinned by solid funk support from former Benson bandmembers Harvey Mason and Paulinho Da Costa. The biggest hang-up are the so-so tunes, which both guitarists gratefully transcend whenever they solo. While Collaboration disappointed many guitar fans back in 1987 who were hoping for a more energetic session, time has underlined and strengthened its musical virtues.

Biography
by Craig Harris
The
role of the flamenco guitar evolved considerably through the playing of
Paco de Lucia (born Francisco Sanchez Gomez). The son of flamenco
guitarist Antonio Sanchez and the brother of a flamenco guitarist, Ramón
de Algeciras, and flamenco singer, Pepe de Lucia, Paco de Lucia
extended the former accompaniment-only tradition of flamenco guitar to
include deeply personal melodic statements and modern instrumentation.
His collaborations included ten albums with flamenco vocalist El Camaron
de la Isla and work with American pianist Chick Corea and the Guitar
Trio, featuring guitarists John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, and Al
DiMeola. His recordings with his sextet, which included his brothers
Ramón and Pepe, include such groundbreaking masterpieces as La Fabulosa
Guitarra de Paco de Lucia, Fantasia Flamenca, Fuente y Caudal,
Almoraima, and Zyryab. Yet, de Lucia did not completely forsake
traditional flamenco. His 1980 album, Interpreta a Manuel de Falla, paid
homage to the classical composer and flamenco enthusiast, while his
1987 album, Siroco, marked a return to pure flamenco. "I have never lost
the roots in my music," de Lucia said during a late-'90s interview,
"because I would lose myself. What I have tried to do is have a hand
holding onto tradition and the other scratching, digging in other
places, trying to find new things I can bring into flamenco."
Born
in Algeciras, a small city in southernmost Spain's Cadiz province, de
Lucia was bred to be a world-class musician. He trained with his father
and brother from the age of five. Mastering the art of flamenco guitar
by his 11th birthday, he made his public performance debut on Radio
Algeciras in 1958. A year later, he received a special award at the
Festival Concurso International Flamenco de Jerez de la Frontera.
Heralded as a child prodigy, de Lucia was invited to join the flamenco
troupe led by dancer José Greco at the age of 16. He remained with the
group for three years. A turning point in de Lucia's musical development
came while on tour with Greco's troupe in North America. Meeting
Sabicas, the first flamenco guitarist to tour the world, he was
instructed to pursue his own style of playing. Although he remained tied
to traditional flamenco on his first two solo albums -- La Fabulosa
Guitarra de Paco de Lucia in 1967 and Fantasia Flamenca in 1969 -- and
continued to seek a personal approach. The renowned guitarist died
suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack in Mexico in February 2014;
he was 66 years old. The city of Algeciras, de Lucia's birthplace,
declared two days of official mourning.

Although die-hard fans might not agree, others may contend that Al di Meola's acoustic guitar work is superior to his electric repertoire. You could cite a heightened sensitivity, an emphasis toward his classical and flamenco influences, and in many instances a calming of his pyrotechnics, allowing one to hear his voice more clearly. The acoustic tracks from his first two solo releases for Columbia Records are here, as well as his collaborations with John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia and the extended string-enhanced Chick Corea composition "Isfahan." He does play fast, but with more earthiness. This is a worthwhile collection for those being introduced to di Meola, as well as those who are weary of his speed-demon flashiness, which is often a detriment to his obvious musicality.

After his 1976 debut on ECM, the stunning Danca Das Cabecas with percussionist Naná Vasconcelos, Gismonti returned the following year with this impressive combo outing. Actually, the album consists of a mix of solo pieces and cuts with various partners, in both duo and trio formats. He penned all the material and shines throughout. The guest do the same, with special mention going to guitarist Ralph Towner, percussionist Colin Walcott, tenor saxophonist Jan Garbarek, and Vasconcelos. Highly recommended.

Since releasing Shaw-Neeq, his seminal 1971 Black Jazz debut album while still a member of Ray Charles' band, guitarist Calvin Keys has recorded only sporadically. In 1975 he issued an extremely worthy Black Jazz follow-up titled Proceed with Caution!, but joined Ahmad Jamal's group and didn't record as a leader until the mid-'80s. He signed with the venerable indie Wide Hive in 2000, issuing the crucial acid jazz classic Detours into Unconscious Rhythms. Blue Keys marks only his fourth outing for the label.
This nine-track set is performed by a star-studded cast that includes Gary Bartz on alto sax, Steve Turre on trombone and shells, Babatunde Lea on percussion, bassists Henry Franklin and Scott Brown, saxophonist Doug Rowan, drummers Thomas McRee and Mike Hughes, pianist/keyboardist Mike Rinta, organist Mike Blankenship, and pianist/producer Gregory Howe.
Set opener "Peregrine's Dive" juxtaposes jaunty post-bop, Latin rhythms, and elegant funk. Introduced by a minor modal piano, a sprightly jazzy guitar run, and Bartz's moaning alto, Turre's trombone enters atop a shuffling, breaking drum kit and double bass. Bartz solos first, weaving sumptuous lines around the band before Turre enters, pushing the crew with a rhythmic approach. Keys adds expansive vamps in direct interplay with trombone and drums. His solo weds complex, rhythmic chord voicings and fluid, edgy single-note runs. The jam ultimately swirls together, moving frenetically yet steadily. It's almost danceable. "CK 22" is introduced by a fingerpopping bass riff before keys and trombone decompress them with open modal circularity; playing both trombone and conch shells, Turre offers harmonic support while Keys delivers a deep blue solo. Speaking of blues, "At Arrival" showcases Keys' canny playing, atop a walking double bass, congas, and drums, while "Making Rain" is a funkier look at jazz-blues à la Phil Upchurch and T-Bone Walker. "Six to Seven" explores dub reggae, post-bop, blues, and funk. Keys' five-note theme is buoyed by brass and reeds atop bumping congas, taut basslines, and percussive syncopation. His guitar winds complex scales yet never abandons the groove. A much edgier blues appears in the title track. Initially, Keys revisits his journey with the Charles band, melding leads, chords, and vamps with a piano accent and swinging Chicago-style horns. Closer "BK 18" is the genuine jazz-funk article. A horn section vamp is urged by the drum kit to set up a frame for Keys, who makes use of Bob Marley's Get Up, Stand Up" in the lyric riff. Rhythmically inventive, Keys solos directly at them before letting the horn section exercise a lyric, harmonic motif that hovers between Fela Kuti and James Brown. The middle-eight breaks the jam open as horns, breaking drums, hypnotic bass, and a meandering keyboard line flow around and through his playing. Following Keys serpentine, cut-to-the-bone solo, the tune concludes with spacy dubwise effects and brassy authority. Though recorded eight years later, Blue Keys picks up where Electric Keys left off yet is more musically advanced and groove-centric. This is powerful stuff.
