Roby Lakatos And His Ensemble • As Time Goes By

Review from MusicWeb International: Roby Lakatos is descended from János Bihari, the celebrated violinist and this compilation of movie themes gets the genuine gypsy treatment with full-blooded interpretations of pieces such as the titular 'As Time Goes By' from Casablanca (1942) and 'If I were a Rich Man' from Fiddler on the Roof. The selections that work best though are those where Lakatos takes centre stage with his expressive violin playing, particularly on the two Morricone tracks, 'Poverty' and 'Deborah's Theme' from Once Upon a Time in America (1984). An agreeable collection, performed with aplomb, that should entertain most and will especially appeal to those who gravitate towards the colour and energy of gypsy music. http://www.musicweb-international.com/film/2002/nov02/lakatos_as_time_goes_by.html

The Classical Jazz Quartet • Play Tchaikovsky

Review:
Jazz renditions of classical compositions go way back -- even before jazz, actually, when the procedure was called "ragging the classics." Tchaikovsky has been friendly territory for jazz players from the start with his great self-contained tunes. The Classical Jazz Quartet -- Kenny Barron on piano, Ron Carter on bass, Stefon Harris on vibraphone and marimba, and Lewis Nash on drums -- takes up where the Modern Jazz Quartet of the 1950s left off. This disc was originally released as The Nutcracker Suite; it now reappears as part of a series of CJQ discs, each devoted to a different composer. This entire disc is based on Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, whose famous tunes each serve as a basis for a variety of post-bop modern jazz improvisations. Tchaikovsky works as well for this purpose as would popular song melodies (for several of which his music has already served as the source, anyhow). A special pleasure is the vibraphone "Dance of the Mirlitons," (here titled "Mirlitonova"), in which Harris comes to the fore with a strong evocation of the style of Milt Jackson of the Modern Jazz Quartet. With the caveat for classical purists that this is a jazz disc rather than a jazz-flavored performance of Tchaikovsky, this is fusion music that anyone can enjoy at holiday time.

Roby Lakatos • Gypsy violin virtuoso

Roby Lakatos is a Romani (Gypsy) violinist from Hungary. He is renowned for his mix of classical music with Hungarian Romani music and jazz themes.

Romani violinist Roby Lakatos is not only a scorching virtuoso, but a musician of extraordinary stylistic versatility.[citation needed] Equally comfortable performing classical music as he is playing jazz and his own Hungarian folk idiom, Lakatos is the rare musician who defies definition. He is referred to as a gypsy violinist or ‘devil’s fiddler’, a classical virtuoso, a jazz improviser, a composer and arranger, and a 19th-century throwback, and he is actually all of these things at once. He is the kind of universal musician so rarely encountered in our time—a player whose strength as an interpreter derives from his activities as an improviser and composer. He has performed in the great halls and festivals of Europe, Asia and America.

Born in 1965 into the legendary family of Romani violinists descended from János Bihari, ‘King of Gypsy Violinists’, Roby Lakatos was introduced to music as a child and at the age of nine he made his public debut as first violin in a Romani band. His musicianship evolved not only within his own family but also at the Béla Bartók Conservatory of Budapest, where he won the first prize for classical violin in 1984. Between 1986 and 1996, he and his ensemble delighted audiences at the restaurant ‘Les Atéliers de la Grande Ille’ in Brussels, their musical home throughout this period. He has collaborated with Vadim Repin and Stéphane Grappelli, and his playing was greatly admired by Sir Yehudi Menuhin, who always made a point of visiting the place to hear Lakatos. In March 2004, Lakatos appeared to great acclaim with the London Symphony Orchestra in the orchestra’s ‘Genius of the Violin’ festival alongside Maxim Vengerov.

When Roby Lakatos mixes so-called ‘classical music’ with the magic of Hungarian-gypsy vitality, it is not disrespectful toward the classical tradition, but it reflects the deep tradition rooted in the cultural heritage of the Romani people and offers new, refreshing pleasures to the listener and music lover. And just as Liszt, Brahms and others used Hungarian overtones in their compositions, so now the public profits from the reuniting of these classics with their Romani roots. This enlivens all those men and women in whose veins still pulses at least a little bit of the blood of the wandering spirit.

Roby Lakatos has released five albums for avanticlassic to date: Prokofiev project with Polina Leschenko, Christian Poltéra and Martha Argerich; Fire Dance; Klezmer Karma with the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, Yiddish singer Myriam Fuks and accordionist Aldo Granato and; Roby Lakatos with Musical Friends with Stéphane Grappelli, Vadim Repin, Randy Brecker, Tony Lakatos - his brother and established jazz musician in his own right, Marc Fosset and the Vieuxtemps Quartet. La Passion live at Sydney Opera House.

Laurindo Almeida • Guitar Music Of Spain

Biography by arwulf arwulf
During a long and uncommonly productive career, Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida achieved a ubiquity in popular music that has yet to be fully recognized. Largely responsible for the Brazilian/North American "samba jazz" that would eventually catch on in the form of a musical trend known as bossa nova, he played behind dozens of well-known pop vocalists and improved the overall texture of many a studio production ensemble. One credible estimate states that Almeida contributed to no less than 800 film soundtracks (among them The Old Man and the Sea, How the West Was Won, and Breakfast at Tiffany's), as well as countless TV scores. He also authored a series of guitar instruction books that are still in use worldwide. A master improviser and a skilled arranger as well as a brilliant interpreter of classical repertoire, he left for posterity superb recordings of works by J.S. Bach, Fryderyk Chopin, Claude Debussy, and Joaquín Rodrigo as well as a host of Brazilian composers including Heitor Villa-Lobos, Radamés Gnattali, and Alfredo Vianna. Almeida's own chamber compositions include a concerto for guitar and orchestra.

Laurindo Jose de Araujo Almeida Nobrega Neto was born in the village of Prainha near the Port of Santos in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, on September 2, 1917. He received his first musical instruction from his mother, a classically trained pianist, and credited her fondness for the music of Fryderyk Chopin as a primary influence. After observing his sister being given guitar lessons, "Lindo" borrowed her instrument and retreated to a barn where he taught himself to play entirely by ear, transferring what he'd heard his mother play on the piano to the strings of the guitar. Many years later he would declare his preference for the direct intimacy of the guitar as opposed to the more percussive piano. By the age of nine he had become uncommonly skilled and was well on the way to becoming a guitar virtuoso; it was then that he lost his father to typhoid fever. At 12 he relocated to São Paulo with his brother. He joined the Revolutionary Army at 15 and was wounded in a civil conflagration. While recuperating in a hospital he met Garoto, a nationally respected guitarist who was visiting to perform for the patients. Within a few years, Almeida would perform and record extensively with Garoto.

In 1935 Almeida moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he teamed up with singer and tenor guitarist Nestor Amaral and began working in radio while becoming active as a songwriter, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist and performing regularly at the Casino da Urea. He composed folk songs, fox trots, sambas, choros, waltzes, and comedic airs, and worked with a broad range of artists including choro master Pixinguinha. He also collected 78-rpm jazz records, and was especially fond of the way Fats Waller played the piano. In 1936, at the age of 19, he got a job (playing banjo for the most part so as to be heard) for half a year on the Cuyaba, a cruise ship that docked in every country along the coast of Europe from Spain to Germany. While visiting Paris he was able to hear Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli in person. In 1941 he played the Casino Copacabana, and switched over to the Casino Balneario da Urca the following year. It was there that he met a Portuguese ballerina named Natalia (Maria Miguelina Ferreira Ribeiro) in 1944 and married her shortly afterwards.

After touring north with Carmen Miranda, Laurindo Almeida moved to Los Angeles in 1947, and was able to do so because of royalties received from the sale of his tune "Johnny Pedlar," made famous as "Johnny Peddler" by popular acts like Jimmy Dorsey, Les Brown, and the Andrews Sisters. He performed in Laguna Beach with Nestor Amaral, José Oliveira, and violinist Elisabeth Waldo and appeared in a variety show with vocalist Dennis Day and comedians Victor Borge and Red Skelton, and in movies with Jimmy Durante and Danny Kaye. What made Almeida so different from anyone else on the scene at the time was his practice of using only his fingers on the guitar strings; everybody else used picks. When asked who his favorite guitarists were, he gave an answer that was emblematic of his entire career: classical virtuoso Andrés Segovia and Oscar Moore of the King Cole Trio. Almeida's film production work brought him to the attention of bandleader Stan Kenton, who hired and featured him while absorbing stylistic elements of the northeast Brazilian baiao, the samba, and the choro. Kenton eventually composed "Lament" especially for the guitarist. Almeida's direct involvement with Kenton's orchestra lasted until 1952. His first album as a solo artist, Concert Creations for Guitar, was released in 1950 by Kenton's host label, Capitol.

Just as Machito, Dizzy Gillespie, and Chano Pozo had enlivened the scene with their Afro-Cuban jazz during the late '40s, Laurindo Almeida's session work during his first decade in the U.S. pollinated the modern jazz scene with rhythms and melodies from Brazil. During the years 1953-1958, he recorded several jazz samba albums with saxophonist Bud Shank that have since come to be regarded as precursors of the bossa nova trend of the late '50s and early '60s. In addition to steady session work with vocalists like June Christy, Rosemary Clooney, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Doris Day, Frankie Laine, Peggy Lee, Robert Mitchum, Connie Russell, Frank Sinatra, Martha Tilton, Mel Tormé, Kitty White, and vocal groups like the Four Freshmen, the Hi-Lo's, and the Platters, Almeida collaborated with bandleader Ray Anthony, pianist George Shearing, multi-instrumentalist Herbie Mann, space age pop music's Juan Garcia Esquivel, Kenton's right-hand man Pete Rugolo, and Hollywood's master of movie music Henry Mancini.

Between 1960 and 1967 Almeida put out no less than nine pop-oriented albums for Capitol; these were in addition to at least as many "classical" titles for that label. When the bossa nova craze really set in, Almeida brought an authentic Brazilian presence to records by Stan Getz, Shorty Rogers, and Cal Tjader; he also assisted with a Harry Belafonte Christmas LP and cut an album with the Modern Jazz Quartet, touring with them throughout all of Europe. While continuing to work with Mancini, he practiced anonymity as a member of Guitars Unlimited and the 50 Guitars of Tommy Garrett, sat in with bandleader Gerald Wilson, backed Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr., and shared a session with trumpeter Rafael Méndez. In 1968 he played on the soundtrack of the film Charly, based upon Flowers for Algernon, a novel by Daniel Keyes.

In 1970 Almeida was one of the musicians backing Phil Ochs on his Greatest Hits album, produced by Van Dyke Parks, who invited the guitarist back to record the album Discover America in 1972. In 1974 Almeida and Bud Shank formed the L.A. 4 with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne (later replaced by Jeff Hamilton); this unit would eventually turn out at least eight albums, mostly for the Concord label, with which Almeida would be closely associated for the rest of his days. During the 1980s he performed with his second wife, Canadian soprano Deltra Ruth Eamon; he also recorded several albums with guitarist Charlie Byrd and led a trio at Disney World in Orlando, FL. In 1988 he formed a three-piece unit called Guitarjam with Sharon Isbin and Larry Coryell. Laurindo Almeida never failed to get behind musicians who earned his respect, and was especially supportive of other guitarists, including fellow Brazilian Baden Powell and classicist Paulo Bellinati. At the age of 74 he cut a live album (Outra Vez) with his trio at a club near San Diego, performing (in addition to his own compositions) works by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Enriqué Granados, Thelonious Monk, Ludwig van Beethoven, Irving Berlin, and Antonin Dvorák. This intriguingly diverse selection was typical of Laurindo Almeida, who passed away on July 26, 1995, in Van Nuys, CA.

Una estimación creíble afirma que Almeida contribuyó a no menos de 800 bandas sonoras de películas (entre ellas The Old Man and the Sea, How the West Was Won y Breakfast at Tiffany's), así como a innumerables bandas sonoras de televisión.

Jerry Murad's Harmonicats • Harmonica Rhapsody

Jerry Murad's Harmonicats were an American harmonica-based group. The band was founded in 1947; by 2009, they were no longer performing. Originally they were named The Harmonica Madcaps and the group consisted of Jerry Murad (chromatic lead harmonica), Bob Hadamik (bass harmonica), Pete Pedersen (chromatic harmonica), and Al Fiore, (chord harmonica). They reformed later as a trio with Murad, Fiore, and bass harmonica player Don Les.

Pedersen and Gail Wallace remained contributors to the group throughout its existence, working on arrangements and occasionally recording.

During 1949 when Don Les' father died, the band called upon Johnny Thompson to fill in for Les on bass harmonica for a couple of weeks. Thompson went on to play with them at their residency gig at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas in the early 1950s. In the mid-1950s, Les suffered from a detached retina, and Thompson once again took his place until Les was able to return full time later in the decade.

Members
Jerry Murad
Jerry Murad (chromatic harmonica), was an Armenian born in Istanbul, Turkey who moved to America at the age of 2. He played diatonic harmonicas at first, and took up chromatic soon after. Murad played Hohner 270s and 64s, as well as the Musette, a harmonica made especially for him that replicates the sound qualities of a French accordion. It is featured on their 1960s recording of "Parisienne Fantasy". Murad also played the Hohner Polyphonia (a type of orchestral melodic harmonica).

Don Les
Don Les (Dominic Leshinski) (1914–1994) (bass harmonica) was born in Lorain, Ohio, with congenital cataracts. He was able to see again at the age of twelve after a "couple of operations," but even as an adult his vision was only about 30% of normal. At one point, he formed his own version of the Harmonicats. The Don Les Harmonicats, which featured Mildred Mulcay (of the harmonica duo the Mulcays) and Lenny Leavitt. They released a Christmas album entitled Christmas with the Don Les Harmonicats.

Al Fiore
Al Fiore (chord harmonica), was born in Chicago and started experimenting with chord harmonicas at the age of 13. Fiore played the rare pre-war Hohner Chord harmonica. He recorded the band's No. 1 hit, Peg o' My Heart on this harmonica.

Lanzaron un álbum de Navidad titulado Christmas with the Don Les Harmonicats.

Renaud Garcia-Fons • Entremundo

Review from All About Jazz (by Jim Santella):
World music is universal. As bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons performs eleven original compositions with his small ensemble, we're treated to the sounds of India, Persia, Spain, Ireland, South America, South Africa, and more. Reaping a contemporary flavor with the harmonic depth of a much larger ensemble, his band provides exotic sounds and pleasant melodies.

Born in 1962 in Paris from Spanish parents, Garcia-Fons has a natural grasp of world music. His title track, "Entremundo," features bowed bass on a soaring climb over the various mountain ranges that circle the globe. By closing the album's program with an eight-minute bass solo, he gives his audience reason to savor the instrument's capacity for lyrical melody. A bass virtuoso, Garcia-Fons emerges as a spokesman for the universal language. Like Yanni, he has the ability to mesmerize the masses with his dynamic performance. Classical music from centuries past combines with folkloric idioms from all over the world in this musical ambassador's vibrant presentation.

"Entre Continentes" captures the celebratory atmosphere found anywhere. Dancing with a lively step, the ten-piece ensemble drives its message forcefully. Don't stop to sit down. You've got to join this wedding celebration with feet flying. "Sarebân" emerges dreamily from a cocoon and proceeds to emulate Michael Flatley's Riverdance, with its persuasive dance aura and popular flute echoes. Classical Spain is represented by Garcia-Fons' lovely pizzicato foray through "Rosario" and his trio's heart-wrenching ache on "40 Días."

The impressionism represented on Entremundo can mesmerize any audience. As Garcia-Fons persuades his five-string acoustic bass to sound like a sitar, violin, cello and guitar, he's in command of the situation. He's in a position to unite nations of music lovers.

Resena de All About Jazz (por Jim Santella):

No te detengas a sentarte.

Rhoda Scott • Come Bach To Me

By Terje Biringvad
What does Johann Sebastian Bach and jazz organ have in common? Rhoda Scott.
The concept for the album 'Bach Come to Me' is quite simple; pick Bach's well-known favorites, every track whereupon Rhoda Scott builds a musical bridge to the well-known jazz standards. But this two-world "simplicity" needs to be played. As an organist, you must first be able to handle complex Bach's works as he wrote them, then plunge into the improvised melodies of familiar themes and then to end the journey as Mr. Bach did on note paper. Bach came to Scott in her early age in the church where her father served, a place she learned to play the organ and the music by the great classical masters. Later it became gospel in the youth community and then piano studies that ended with a Masters degree in music theory. For the record label Barclay 'Bach Come to Me' was is a daring project for the jazz record buying public in 1971; mixing classical music and jazz organ had not been done before (in the symphonic prog rock genre, super groups like Ekseption, Trace, ELP and Yes had great success mixing classical, rock and jazz elements).
Finding the right musical bridge to put together the right Bach work with a standard jazz tune cannot be done randomly, here Scott has done a solid craftsmanship that makes the music flow naturally while also challenges the listener to follow carefully. Scott does not do the job alone on her Hammond B-3 organ on this album, she has the great support of drummer Felix Simtaine, as loyal and discreet coloring impressive in the various dynamic sections. The organ show is for me started by selecting the last track 'Toccata a re Mineur - Autumn Leaves' on the album, the famous Toccata is probably the ultimate test on how to play Bach correctly. I cannot consider the nuances of the accuracy of the Toccata played and it sounds impressive all the way to 'Autumn Leaves' the being lifted on to the celestial spheres through the impressive tonal variations on the organ with Scott's impressive block chord style in a killing pace. The album's best track. "Prelude say bemol majeure - The Preacher" brings us back to Scott's gospel roots in New Jersey, 'The Preacher' a true display of gospel organ artistry. Funky Bach? Be assured that it works on the 'Symphonie you nouveau monde - Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay', the funky blues organ does not compromise on the tracks originality. `Prelude en sol mineur - Moanin', 'Seigneur Jesus je t'appelle - Come Bach to me' and 'Sonate au Clair de humor - Espoir' starts quietly and gently as adagio's, or ballads, always do, but that's before Scott shows that she has other intentions when she brine us into the jazz organ department at a furious pace after which the ending is in Bach's spirit. I rate this album as one of the best albums in Rhoda Scott's vast discography - the album concept is still cutting edge after 40 years in the market.

Renaud Garcia-Fons • Méditerranées - A Mediterranean Journey

Renaud Garcia-Fons, a singular route between classical, jazz and world music.
Renaud Garcia-Fons was born in 1962 near Paris to parents from the Catalonia region of northeastern Spain, and was introduced to music at age five, taking up the piano and classical guitar. As a young man, he studied the double bass at the Paris Conservatory of Music, performing in its orchestras and refining his knowledge of music theory and performance. He also became the private student of François Rabbath,  as a member of Le Big Band Roger Guerin, he performed side-by-side with some of the most renowned of jazz drummers, including Kenny Clarke and Sam Woodyard. By age 21, Renaud  was awarded a diploma by the French Cultural Minister as Professor of Double Bass. From this point forward he worked independently, allowing his adventurous spirit to liberate him from the technical limitations of his instrument in favor of greater freedom to improvise; and to explore music at the crossroads of jazz, traditional, and contemporary music.
Ten years into this journey, he decided to add a fifth string to his bass, enabling possibilities well beyond the idea of the double bass as an accompanying instrument and particularly the option to be one of an ensemble's improvising voices. Combining this innovation with his con arco and pizzicato techniques, he reached an unprecedented level of performance. Some began to call him the “Paganini of the double bass.” While this has been a great compliment, a more accurate comparison is to Astor Piazzolla, Jimi Hendrix, and Paco de Lucia – artists who have advanced the possibilities of their instrument on the force of selfdirected study and research.
As a member of the Orchestre des Contrebasses and later of the Orchestre National de Jazz directed by Claude Barthélémy, Renaud's knowledge of jazz and improvisation deepened, and brought him into direct contact with many leading European and American jazz musicians. The art of improvisation became a central element in his artistic vision. There are multiple sources for his musical inspiration. He feels as close to the Flamenco tradition, which he has transposed for the double bass, as to the music of the Mediterranean and Orient. This has led him to collaborations with David Dorantes, Gerardo Núñez, and Esperanza Fernandez, as well as Angélique Ionatos (Greece),  Dhafer Youssef (Tunisia), Huong Tanh (Vietnam), and Kudsi Ergüner (Turkey).
A fruitful relationship with Matthias Winckelmann, producer and founder of the German label Enja Records, has resulted in nine recordings: Légendes, Alboréa, Oriental Bass, Fuera (with accordionist Jean-Louis Matinier), Navigatore, Entremundo, Arcoluz (a DVD-CD recording of a trio concert given in Germany), La Línea del Sur with guest singer Esperanza Fernandez, and the newly released Méditerranées. Renaud Garcia-Fons page two Renaud has led a variety of ensembles including the Oriental Bass ensemble, Navigatore 5tet and 8tet, and he has given solo concerts whose title is Pilgrim. Over the past three years, he's performed most frequently with his trio, consisting of Flamenco guitarist Antonio “Kiko” Ruiz and percussionist Pascal Rollando. The trio has evolved into a new quartet with the addition of accordionist David Venitucci who performs on La Línea del Sur. Also new is Renaud's collaboration with Flamenco dancer and singer Sabrina Romero in both solo and quartet settings.
In parallel with his career as a performer, Renaud has been a prolific composer, fulfilling commissions as well as broadening the repertoire of his performing ensembles. At the Scene Nationale de Sceaux in October 2004, he presented World Chamber Music, a piece for string quartet, double bass, and two instruments of Eastern origin: the bansuri, a fute prominent in northern Indian music; and the riq, a small tambourine equipped with cymbals that is played in all Arab music. A commission for the anniversary of the Entente Franco-Ecossaise ofered an opportunity to bring together artists of diferent worlds. For this occasion Renaud composed a piece in five movements for his trio and seven soloists from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Tutti orchestral sequences alternate with more intimate orchestrations, giving individual chamber orchestra members an opportunity to join the trio in improvisation. Renaud and the soloists gave the work's premiere in Scotland in late October 2004 and, the following month, performed it in France at the Festival de la Côte d'Opale and at the Grand Théâtre de Dijon. In 2007, Opera de Lyon gave him carte blanche to program five evenings of concerts.
The following year began with Paquito D'Rivera's Concerto for Clarinet, Double Bass, and Symphony Orchestra, written in tribute to Cuban double bassist Cachao and premiered in Spain's Canary Islands with Renaud on double bass. That summer, Renaud visited Canada for the first time, giving festival performances in Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, Calgary, Montréal, and Québec, and gave his first performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands. The Montréal Jazz Festival invited Renaud to return in 2008 for its prestigious Invitation Series, where artists are presented in three distinct musical settings in the course of three successive nights. He performed in two duos – one with Flamenco dancer Sabrina Romero and another with accordionist Jean-Louis Matinier – and then with his La Línea del Sur quartet. The summer also brought recognition from the International Society of Bassists, which gave Renaud its biennial award for Solo Performance. In 2010, the Deutsch Phono-Akademie chose him for its 2010 ECHO Deutsche Musikpreis for international bassist of the year and the recording La Línea del Sur; and did so again in 2012 for the recording Méditerranées. The Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla awarded its 2010 Giraddillo de Oro prize to Renaud, marking the first time a double bassist has received this prestigious Flamenco award. For its 2011 edition, Germany's Kurt Weill Fest commissioned Renaud to compose and perform new music for the showing of the film classic Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed directed by Lotte Reiniger. This new work has toured in Europe since its festival premiere. He has also been commissioned by Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Limoges to write music for the ballet Carmen in collaboration with choreographer by Sergio Simon for premiere in 2012. This past September, he recorded a solo performance in a 12th century church in southern France, Le prieuré de Marcevol, and released it as the DVD-CD entitled Solo – the Marcevol Concert, his tenth recording for Enja Records. The album has received critical acclaim, including the Preis der Deutschen Schallplatten Kritik (German Record Critics' Award).

Kyle Eastwood & Clint Eastwood • Eastwood Symphonic

"Eastwood Symphonic" is bassist Kyle Eastwood's tribute to his father Clint Eastwood, the actor, director and - musician. It is less known that Clint Eastwood wrote the music for some of his films himself and that his son Kyle assisted him in the composition and arrangements. In addition, themes from other Eastwood films by Lalo Schifrin, Ennio Morricone and John Williams can be heard.

"In the Eastwood family, music is a family affair. My father knows and loves music, especially jazz, and he passed on to me his passion for music and as well as cinema. Throughout his career and in recent years, he and I have composed the music for these films. The idea for Eastwood Symphonic was to reinterpret my father's greatest film scores with a blend of jazz and classical. This is a project that is very close to my heart. I can pay tribute to my father and his film scores as well as many of the brilliant film composers who have contributed to his films over the years. I want to dedicate this album to them and especially to my father, who showed me what dedication, commitment and joy in one's work really is. Thanks, Dad, for the inspiration and all the decades of mind-blowing cinema."
- Kyle Eastwood

European Jazz Trio • Best Of Classics

about the trio.
The European Jazz Trio, comprising Marc van Roon on Piano, Frans van der Hoeven on bass and Roy Dackus on drums has been recording and performing since 1995, when it released a CD of Beatles' songs in fresh arrangements.

On each album, the trio has taken songs in every style, shape and color, and has given them a jazz interpretation. For the trio 'Jazz' means to have the freedom to combine and mix styles, melodies, sounds and rhythms to create something fresh and surprising.

Van Roon: "A Specialty of the trio is to try and find some unusual material - unusual in a jazz setting - and to arrange it for the trio. It works both ways: You can take the sound of a jazz trio and give it a fresh voice, a new approach; likewise, you can take the music that everybody knows - pop tunes and classical tunes - and give people a chance to hear them in a different way."

The European Jazz Trio pushes the envelope of jazz music by adding to it its own sound and rhythm, a result of the music that has influenced the trio's members.

"We grew up in the seventies and eighties with pop, rock, classical, rap and lots of fusion music. It wasn't only jazz anymore. Being musicians, we try to absorb everything like a sponge and use it somehow. The classical music we perform we really admire, it's very close to us - to our European side."

With every song the trio records the main focus is on the essence and the inner beauty of the composition.

"You cannot approach each song in the same way. And it doesn't have so much to do with what we as a trio want to do. It's contained within the song, it's already there. So it's more about what we can leave out, what we don't have to play. This makes each performance unique and special."

The European Jazz trio has been recording new albums every year since the release of 'Memories of Liverpool' in 1995. All recording are produced by Makoto Kimata, a highly appreciated jazz producer based in Tokyo. Recent albums have been co-produced by Hiro Yamashita from the record label M&I / Pony Canyon Tokyo.

European Jazz Trio • Best of Classics II

about the trio.
