Bucky Pizzarelli • Challis In Wonderland

Review from AllMusic (by Ken Dryden):
Bucky Pizzarelli salutes arranger Bill Challis, who was responsible for many of the most important charts played by the Jean Goldkette Orchestra and Paul Whiteman's Orchestra, along with helping transcribe the handful of compositions by legendary cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. In his eighties at the time of these sessions, the seven-string guitarist shows no signs of slowing down, joined by bassist Jerry Bruno and on a few tracks adding his son John on guitar or a swinging string quartet led by the talented young violinist Aaron Weinstein with string arrangements by Dick Lieb. Most of the repertoire includes music of the '20s and '30s, with two exceptions. Pizzarelli's original "Challis in Wonderland" is a lush, laid-back ballad saluting the arranger performed as a guitar duet, while Bob Haggart's timeless ballad "What's New" has long been a part of the leader's repertoire. Zez Confrey penned the obscure "Romanza," played as an intimate father/son duet. The trio's intricate reading of Beiderbecke's "In the Dark" is a lyrical masterpiece. Pizzarelli is buoyed by the strings in his breezy, toe-tapping rendition of Beiderbecke's "Davenport Blues," while the cornetist's "In a Mist" has long been a brilliant, expected solo feature for the guitarist at jazz parties. Weinstein switches to mandolin for a swinging setting of "Oh Baby" with the leader and Bruno. These rewarding sessions by Bucky Pizzarelli provide ample proof that the master guitarist keeps the spirits of Bix Beiderbecke and Bill Challis very much alive.

Bucky Pizzarelli Trio • Three For All

Pizzarelli was faceless for most of his 75-year career, working with big bands, television ensembles, session musicians, and vocalists’ orchestras. When he was nearly 50 the guitarist began to gain a reputation with the public, getting notice first for a duo act with fellow guitarist George Barnes and then on his own, either leading his own bands or playing solo guitar.

He was a pioneer in jazz for his use of the seven-string guitar, which allowed him to play bass parts simultaneously with understated chords and single-note lines. The unusual instrument aside, he was known for his tasteful style, with chord-based solos that nodded more to rhythm guitarists like Freddie Green (whom he cited as his major influence) than melodists like Wes Montgomery.

Asked in his mid-eighties by writer George Cole about his approach to music, Pizzarelli replied, “Every day I get up and I try to correct what I screwed up the night before!”

John Paul Pizzarelli was born January 9, 1926 in Paterson, New Jersey. His parents, John and Amelia DiDomenico Pizzarelli, owned a grocery store—although his father had previously been a ranch hand in Texas and was obsessed with cowboys. He nicknamed his baby son “Buckskin,” which was shortened to Bucky and stuck for life.

Two of Pizzarelli’s uncles played guitar and banjo, and young Bucky decided to be a musician when he saw his uncle Bobby, the guitarist, working in big bands (and making big money despite the Great Depression). He began playing the guitar himself when he was nine, with his uncles as his first teachers.

Outside his family, Pizzarelli’s musical models were Green, Django Reinhardt, and two guitarists associated with Benny Goodman: Charlie Christian, the first great electric guitarist in jazz, and George Van Eps, the first to play a seven-string guitar. Through these gateways, Pizzarelli became a deep scholar of jazz guitar, able to outline its history and key players chapter and verse.

At 17, he joined singer Vaughn Monroe’s dance band and went on the road. After only a few months, however, he was drafted into the U.S. Army infantry, seeing action in Germany and Austria in the few months before the end of the European phase of World War II. He went to the Philippines to mobilize for an invasion of Japan—which, because of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, never came. After his 1946 discharge, he rejoined Monroe.

Pizzarelli went in 1952 to NBC Television, working in the orchestra for singer Kate Smith’s program. When that ended, he joined pop band the Three Suns for two years, then became a New York session player—appearing, uncredited, on massive hit records such as Dion and the Belmonts’ “A Teenager in Love,” Ray Charles’ “Georgia on My Mind,” and Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me.”

He returned in 1964 to NBC, where he became the guitarist in the Tonight Show band. In 1972, when the show’s production moved to Los Angeles, Pizzarelli stayed behind. He had already formed a duo with guitarist George Barnes, winning considerable acclaim and a sizable following at the Playboy Club. (They also performed a much-lauded concert at Town Hall in 1971, later released as an album on Columbia Records.) After breaking with Barnes, Pizzarelli started playing solo gigs and became a success. He soon began recording regularly as a leader.

In 1980, Pizzarelli and his son John, a guitarist and vocalist, began a four-week residency at the Pierre Hotel in New York. It was the beginning of a 40-year collaboration between father and son, who made numerous records together and toured frequently, sometimes with other players but more often just as a duo. Pizzarelli also worked over the years with another son, bassist Martin, and his daughter, Mary, yet another (classical) guitarist.

In addition to Benny Goodman, with whom Pizzarelli worked regularly from 1966 until Goodman’s death in 1986, his high-profile gigs included two performances at the White House under Ronald Reagan—one for the president of Italy, the other for the King of Jordan—and a third under Bill Clinton, as well as a performance at former First Lady Pat Nixon’s birthday party. In 2012, he (and son John) appeared on Paul McCartney’s standards album Kisses on the Bottom.

Bucky Pizzarelli, a celebrated guitarist whose collaborators ranged from Vaughn Monroe and Benny Goodman to Ben E. King and Paul McCartney, died April 1 at his home in Saddle River, New Jersey. He was 94.

His death was announced by his son John Pizzarelli, another frequent collaborator, who said that the cause of death was coronavirus, with which the elder Pizzarelli had been diagnosed on March 29.

Barney Kessel • Some Like It Hot

Review
by Scott Yanow
The release of the movie Some Like It Hot served as a good excuse for guitarist Kessel to join together with Art Pepper (switching between alto, clarinet, and tenor), trumpeter Joe Gordon, pianist Jimmy Rowles, rhythm guitarist Jack Marshall, bassist Monty Budwig, and drummer Shelly Manne to interpret a variety of vintage numbers, most of which dated from the 1920s. Such tunes as "I Wanna Be Loved by You," "Runnin' Wild," "Down Among the Sheltering Palms," and "By the Beautiful Sea" are given fairly modern arrangements but still retain the flavor of the 1920s, and it's particularly interesting to hear Gordon and Pepper soloing on these ancient songs.

Canciones como "I Wanna Be Loved by You", "Runnin' Wild", "Down Among the Sheltering Palms" y "By the Beautiful Sea" tienen arreglos bastante modernos, pero aún conservan el sabor de la década de 1920, y es particularmente interesante escuchar a Gordon y Pepper solos en estas canciones antiguas.

Bucky Pizzarelli • April Kisses

Master guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli offers 20 short, patient solo pieces played on his seven-string, acoustic, Benedetto, plectrum, archtop, hollow-bodied, double f-hole instrument. They reflect the style and compositions of early pioneers Carl Kress, Eddie Lang, and George VanEps, and emphasize that Pizzarelli was, and still is in the company of these peers, mentors, and historic figures. A flamenco tinge is unmistakable on the first two numbers, Kress' "Helena" and the Lang written title cut. Then a classical, no-time feeling comes about on the regret filled three part Kress suite "Afterthoughts." By "The End of a Love Affair" Pizzarelli's guitar is weeping and moaning. George M. Smith is another figurehead in this tradition and he gets his due on "Slow Burning," as does Django Reinhardt for "Tears." More classical sounding selections as Kress' "Love Song" make way for tunes with some tempo, like the two beat Pizzarelli original "Indy Annie," based on "Back Home Again in Indiana," the upbeat Kress number "Sutton Mutton," and the slower VanEps chestnut "Squattin' at the Grotto." Pizzarelli tosses in a polka-like, cat quick single line with chordal accented tribute to bassist Slam Stewart "Slamerino," a technical marvel. Concluding the program are more swinging displays like Kress' "Peg Leg Shuffle," Bucky's hard driving "Stompin' for Boz," and the slicker "Silk City Blues." Pizzarelli's sound should be put on the commodities market and sold as a public offering. This music is much more precious than bars of gold. Only the lack of a rhythm section might detract more listeners from getting next to this beautifully conceived work. Those who don't need bass and drums surely will treasure this regardless.

John Paul "Bucky" Pizzarelli (January 9, 1926 – April 1, 2020) was an American jazz guitarist.

He was the father of jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli and double bassist Martin Pizzarelli. He worked for NBC as a staffman for Dick Cavett (1971) and ABC with Bobby Rosengarden in (1952). The list of musicians he collaborated with includes Benny Goodman, Les Paul, Stéphane Grappelli, and Antônio Carlos Jobim. Pizzarelli cited as influences Django Reinhardt, Freddie Green, and George Van Eps

Early life :
Pizzarelli was born on January 9, 1926, in Paterson, New Jersey. He learned to play guitar and banjo at a young age. His uncles, Pete and Bobby Domenick, were professional musicians, and sometimes the extended family would gather at one of their homes with their guitars for jam sessions. Pizzarelli cited as an inspiration Joe Mooney, a blind accordion player who led a quartet that included Pizzarelli's uncle, Bobby Domenick.During high school, Pizzarelli was the guitarist for a small band that performed classical music.

Career :
Pizzarelli began his professional career at 17 when he joined the Vaughn Monroe dance band in 1944.

In 1952 Pizzarelli became a staff musician for NBC, playing with Skitch Henderson. In 1964, he became a member of The Tonight Show Band on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. During his time spent performing for the Tonight Show, he accompanied guest bands and musicians playing through a variety of musical genres, including playing with Tiny Tim (after tuning the performer's ukulele) on the day that Tiny Tim married Miss Vicki on Carson's show.

From 1956 to 1957, Pizzarelli used the stage name "Johnny Buck" and performed with The Three Suns pop music trio. He toured several times with Benny Goodman until Goodman's death in 1986. During the following year, he and guitarist George Barnes formed a duo and recorded two albums, including a live performance in August 1971, at The Town Hall in New York City. Beginning in the 1970s, he began recording as a leader, issuing many tributes to musicians of the 1930s. He performed with Benny Goodman at the White House in Washington, D.C., and he performed for presidents Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and First Lady Pat Nixon.

"Jersey Jazz Guitars" was the name of a 1985 concert held at the Rutgers University Nicholas Music Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The ticket featured Pizzarelli, Les Paul, Tal Farlow, and Pizzarelli's son, John. The concert was aired on New Jersey's public radio station as part of their three-part New Jersey Summerfare Series. Pizzarelli and Les Paul had performed together before, as they were neighbors and friends. The show aired for one hour in August 1985, with son John adding his vocals on two selections.

Pizzarelli continued to play into his 90s, making several appearances even after a stroke in 2016, officially retiring after a final brief appearance with Michael Feinstein in 2018.

Guitars :
Pizzarelli's first guitar was an archtop Gibson, an expensive instrument at the time. He played a Benedetto Bucky Pizzarelli Signature seven-string guitar made by Robert Benedetto, who also makes guitars for Howard Alden and Frank Vignola. He learned to play the seven-string from George Van Eps.The extra string on Pizzarelli's guitar provided him with a bass line during performances. Pizzarelli also played a custom seven-string American archtop guitar made by luthier Dale Unger, who also makes custom guitars for Pizzarelli's partner, Ed Laub.

///////

Bucky Pizzarelli & Frank Vignola • Moonglow

Review
by Ken Dryden
Two of the modern masters of jazz guitar, Bucky Pizzarelli and Frank Vignola are a generation apart in age but of the same mind when it comes to their style of playing. Both lovers of memorable melodies, Pizzarelli has long favored a seven-string electric guitar and primarily sticks to playing inventive rhythm accompaniment behind Vignola's bright lead lines. This duo guitar date focuses on ballads, most of which were standards at one time, though many of them have unjustly fallen from favor at the dawn of a new century, including songs like "Moonlight Serenade" and "Deep Purple." Though both have tremendous chops and can show off when they desire to do so, their joint focus in on subtle lyricism throughout the date, seeking to please no one but themselves. The intimate sound makes the listener feel like an eavesdropper on a private session between two old friends. It is almost criminal to highlight just a few of this CD's 16 tracks, so it should be sufficient to say that this release provides a perfect background at the end of a busy day with someone special.https://www.allmusic.com/album/moonglow-mw0000688551

Joe Pass • Live In Vegas

By the time of his death from cancer in 1994, Joe Pass was widely recognized as one of the top jazz guitarists of all time, especially for his virtuoso solo performances. Prior to his passing, I had an opportunity to do a phone interview with Pass and was rather surprised that the guitarist found it difficult to listen to his recordings, as he always felt that he could have played better.

The 1988 broadcast of his appearance at the French Quarter Room of the Four Queens Hotel in Las Vegas was compiled from several sets by engineer Brian Sanders. Pass was a bit difficult to work with, according to Sanders, for several reasons. He arrived without an amplifier and plugged directly into the p. a. system, which caused some problems with the sound, particularly a persistent hum in the background. Pass also demanded changes in the typical broadcast agreement, limiting the airing of the show to a single satellite feed (whereas most shows were rebroadcast at least once) and asking for the return of the master tape afterwards.

Even though this broadcast was compiled from several sets, it has the feeling of a typical performance by Joe Pass. The guitarist worked without any planning, simply choosing songs from the immense musical library within his mind and working his magic upon each selection.

The set begins with an introspective, swinging interpretation of "Come Rain or Come Shine, full of Pass' brief detours into elaborate improvisations. The guitarist's lyricism comes through in "Beautiful Love, while Clifford Brown's "Joy Spring, long a part of his repertoire, is simply breathtaking during his stunning flights through this bop masterpiece.

Pass also delves into the music of Latin American, including a swinging take of Ivan Lins' "Daquilo Que Eu Sei (which is slightly marred near the beginning because of some idiot screaming in the distance, though gambling was taking place not that far from the French Quarter Room) and one of Jobim's most beloved works, "Corcovado (Quiet Nights and Quiet Stars). But he saves the best for last with a slow savored, jaunty take of "Mack the Knife (while joking afterward with a musical illustration about the ridiculous tempo at which it is typically performed, followed by a lengthy workout of "Cherokee that features some of the most elaborate runs of the evening and a blazing finale.

There is the outside possibility that the master tapes were part of Joe Pass' estate and that his heirs may eventually seek to commercially issue this live set. But for the time being, only those who happened to think of taping this 1988 broadcast of the Four Queens Jazz Night From Las Vegas series are able to enjoy this music.

El set comienza con una interpretación introspectiva y oscilante de "Come Rain or Come Shine, full of Pass' breves desvíos hacia elaboradas improvisaciones.

Angelo Debarre (guitar) – Marius Apostol (violon) – Tchavolo Hassan (rythmic guitar) – Antonio Licusati (double bass) - Raangy Debarre (rythmic guitar) - invité possible : Constantin Lacatus (cymbalum)

Marius Apostol • Bohemian Jazz Project

///////

///////

Settled in France for a dozen years now, Marius Apostol, who is now releasing his first album as a leader, is far from being an unknown. This first prize winner at the Bucharest Conservatory, who first gained experience with the Gypsy band Urs Karpatz at the end of the 1990s, very quickly expanded his repertoire to include jazz, accompanying all the greats of gypsy swing: Biréli Lagrène, Angelo Debarre, Stochelo Rosenberg and many others...

It is however with a rather unexpected formation in view of his CV that Marius decided to propose his first project: rhythmic piano (Manuel Rocheman, please...!), double bass (Marc Michel Le Bévillon), drums (Luis Augusto), we are not really in the Hot Club de France like Django/Grappelli, but in the classic jazz quartet. Angelo Debarre will nevertheless come to push some electric and virtuoso choruses on three tracks with a lively swing (Swing 2012, Swing d'Ajaccio and the very bop Move always up-tempo), just like his accomplice Ludovic Beier with the accordina on the bossa Mary Bianca and very lively on the pretty ballad Elegance.

Each musician finds perfectly his place in this traditional quartet where mastery, balance and musicality are essential. The solidity of the rhythm allows the violinist all the audacities, and the complicity with Manuel Rocheman, great colorist, is immediately obvious; listen how his harmonic inventions on You and Me respond admirably to the simplicity of the theme (signed Django) taken by the leader.
The excellence and virtuosity of Marius Apostol, who signs here eight titles on the twelve tracks of the album, is no longer to be demonstrated. Equally at ease in classical music (see the intro of Swing Stelian) as in jazz, on ballads (magnificent version of Beautiful Love) as much as on bop tempo (Move) or the swings removed (Swing 2012, Swing d'Ajaccio) his playing always remains admirably fluid, fair, sensitive and inventive. And when, in some places, his phrasing finds the Romanian accents of his origins (Gypsy sweetness, imprint) his music becomes even more endearing...
With Bohemian Jazz Project and its luxurious rhythmics, Marius Apostol signs his first audacious, sincere and perfectly convincing album. We would very much like to see it followed by a tour on the roads of France! Gentlemen festival-goers...

Rocky Gresset • Rocky Gresset

Review by Ken Dryden
The Gypsy swing music of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli of the 1930s has been kept alive by various European jazz musicians in the decades since Reinhardt's death in 1953 and Grappelli's in 1996. For the most part, the young guitarist Rocky Gresset continues Reinhardt's approach in his debut effort as a leader, utilizing a quartet with violinist Costel Nitescu and rhythm guitarist Matheu Chatelain, with bassist Jeremie Arranger taking over on two tracks. Gresset doesn't really break new ground in his treatments of standards like “Time on My Hands," “Just One of Those Things," and “Blue Skies." One of Reinhardt's songs, “Webster," is an obscurity dating from the guitarist's post-World War II years; Gresset and Nitescu offer impressive solos. While most of the music is Gypsy swing, Gresset switches to electric guitar for an impressive rendering of Wes Montgomery's “Jingles," which adds some Gypsy elements into the driving bop vehicle. He also plays electric guitar in an upbeat swinging setting of “Here's That Rainy Day" and the late Michel Petrucciani's upbeat Latin-flavored gem “Looking Up." This is an impressive beginning for Rocky Gresset.

Gresset no abre nuevos caminos en sus tratamientos de estándares como "Time on My Hands", "Just One of Those Things" y "Blue Skies".

The Squeezebox Trio • And A Hotplate

Biography
Purveyors of Gypsy Swing, Sydney act The Squeezebox trio take the driving rhythms of 1930’s Django Rienhardt and combine it with the intensity of Eastern European Balkan music to give one hell of an energetic performance. Add in a few Russian drinking songs, some Disney film classics, more than enough self-deprecating humor and there you have it. Thomas Hodson draws on his time spent touring Europe to bring out the niches of the Balkan tradition, while Javen Sanchez sets a solid Gypsy Jazz foundation with a flamenco flare. Finally, Michael O’Donnell’s draws eclectic mix of gypsy and bluegrass violin to provide some gorgeous melodies over the bands well-arranged three-part harmonies.
After making their debut festival performance at Canberra National Folk Festival 2014, the boys got a taste for the festival circuit, performing concerts all over metropolitan and region NSW and Victoria. The last two years have seen them touring on the strength of their “Frogstamp” EP, both performing demonstrating workshops at Bendigo Blues & Roots (VIC), Gulgong Folk Festival (NSW), Dorrigo Folk and Bluegrass Festival (NSW), Perisher Peak Festival (NSW), Illawarra Folk Festival (NSW), JazzBANG, Planet Dungog and many more.
Finally, after the successful launch of their debut album “And a Hotplate”; SBT recently embarked on an extensive 25 date New Zealand tour headlining the Whare Flats Folk Festival. The album features a myriad of special guests to help Squeezebox present the best of their most recent touring material, including Hodson’s bizarrely original compositions, which are juxtaposed by a selection of great swing tunes spanning from the 1920’s right up till the present.

Yorgui Loeffler • For Magnio

///////

///////

Yorgui Loeffler is a French gypsy jazz guitarist, born in 1979 in Haguenau (Alsace, France).
Yorgui Loeffler is a distant cousin of Biréli Lagrène and an equally distant relative of accordionist Marcel Loeffler. Under the influence of his older brother Gigi Loeffler, he took up the guitar at the age of 14 and accompanied the latter before they exchanged roles, Yorgui playing the solo part since at least 2003.

Yorgui Loeffler's debut on record came in 2003 with the self-production of an album, For Magnio, recorded by the Loeffler brothers with their cousin Gino Roman (the latter on double bass) and a pianist, Vincent Bidal. Yorgui Loeffler is then noticed by the velocity of his playing and the presence of two waltzes on the album. This album earned him a second prize at the Revelations 2003 of the Juan-les-Pins Jazz Festival.

In 2005, he was the guest of Marcel Loeffler, accompanied by Biréli Lagrène and Marcel Azzola, among others, on the CD Source manouche. The same year, with Samson Schmitt and Mike Reinhardt (no relation to Django Reinhardt), he formed a guitar trio, Les Enfants de Django. The same year, he recorded Live in Paris at the Jazz Club Étoile of the Hôtel Méridien in Paris.

In 2008, he formed a quartet with Steeve Laffont and Chris Campion (the double bass is still provided by Gino Roman) simply named Latchès. The quartet was invited to Stéphane Bern's show Le Fou du roi on October 8, 2008, and recorded an eponymous disc [ref. required] on the Universal Jazz label. The group opens for Thomas Dutronc and is also invited to the show Sébastien et les gitans by Patrick Sébastien on December 20, 2008.

In 2009, Yorgui Loeffler recorded his second solo album, Bouncin' Around, with Harmonia Mundi, again accompanied by the faithful Gino Roman and his brother Gigi but also by Billy Weiss on rhythm guitar and Vincent Bidal on piano. It must be said that at this time, Yorgui claims Chopin as his main influence (apart from Django Reinhardt). His quintet was again invited to Stéphane Bern's house. The same year, the Loeffler brothers take part in a documentary on French jazz co-produced by Arte: From Harlem to Montmartre . They met Wynton Marsalis, who played trumpet on the tracks illustrating the film.

Still with Steeve Lafont and Raphaël Faÿs, Yorgui Loeffler joins a trio of guitarists formed on the occasion of the centenary of Django Reinhardt (the year 2010 being decreed Django year), which still records on Harmonia Mundi the album Nothing but Django (Django and nothing else).

In 2014, a variety of rose is created and named Django Reinhardt. Yorgui Loeffler is the godfather.

Salvatore Russo • Gypsy Jazz Trio

He worked in '90 as session man in concerts and discographical recordings with the most important italian musicians and artists in Rome, and he was present as guitarist in many bands and orchestras in the most important National TV channels of that period.

He started his music teacher career very young, and in the 1993, when he was 23, he taught rock guitar in the celebrated school "Saint Louis College of Music” in Rome, a cooperation that still persists and that demostrates his artistic and didactic collaborations.

Salvatore Russo can boast thirty and more years of concerts, mostly executed in Europe and Latin America. Nowadays he plays in the Salvatore Russo's "Gypsy Jazz Trio”, and collaborates with the great guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg too, leader of the "Rosenberg Trio" and maximum exponent of the musical style created by the genius Django Reinhardt known as gypsy jazz.
