George Benson • In Concert - Carnegie Hall

Review by Thom Jurek
In Concert -- Carnegie Hall is George Benson's final recording for Creed Taylor's CTI label, and was mostly recorded on one night in 1975. There was some additional recording done at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in 1976, where Taylor replaced the original rhythm section of Wayne Dockery on bass and Marvin Chapell on drums with Will Lee and Steve Gadd, for whatever reason Taylor had at the time. Regardless, this is a solid "live" effort with Benson cooking on all burners, beginning with a monster version of Dave Brubeck's "Take Five," which had been cut on an earlier album and had become a staple in the live set. Organist Ronnie Foster's backing skills here are indispensable, as they keep Benson talking to the other members of the band. The version of "Summertime" here could have been recorded by Phil Spector. The concert version of the tune -- on which Benson takes a vocal -- has been added to with the substitution of the rhythm section and the later addition of a string orchestra in the studio. (Perhaps Taylor understood Benson's crossover appeal; he would cross over into the pop charts on Warner the next year with "This Masquerade.") The crowd dug it, but it's simply OK over the test of time. Hipper is the long snaky groove of Benson's own "Gone," with begins with the steady pulse of Hubert Laws playing a counterpoint foil on flute. The entwining harmonic interplay between the two is gorgeous and goes on for over ten minutes. The band then takes on Freddie Hubbard's "Sky Dive" with real aplomb. The Latin rhythm and slippery guitar by Benson pull the rhythm section up a notch before he begins the head. His funky articulation of fifths and then eighths in his break is mesmerizing. The way Chapell rides the cymbal like a bell is particularly satisfying. The album closes on another Benson original with Laws popping in again. It's called "Octane." Over ten minutes in length, it begins with Benson in full roar before the time signature changes and triples, feeling like a bebop tune more than anything else. Foster keeps it all grounded, but this baby swings so hard it threatens to lift off. In retrospect, listening to this record in the 21st century, it's difficult to imagine Benson making the switch from a classy guitar firebrand to a pop star so quickly.

Thievery Corporation • Saudade

There’s no English analog for the Portuguese word saudade, which translates roughly to a melancholic longing for someone or something from the past. The term so aptly fits Thievery Corporation’s oeuvre (always wistful and dreamy) that it’s a wonder this is the first time the D.C. duo have employed it as an album title. Looking to the sounds of Brazil–bossa nova, samba, tropicalia–for their seventh long-player, longtime musical partners Rob Garza and Eric Hilton deliver a set that evokes shimmering seascapes and poolside cocktails. It’s the kind of album James Bond would put on for a romantic evening in Rio.

Saudade‘s expressive acoustic guitars and placid string arrangements meld sweetly with delicate synths and gentle percussion, as a rotating cast of five female vocalists coo sensuous melodies. While many of these songs (“Quem Me Leva,” the title track) are bold adventurers into new sonic territory, others, such as “Depth of My Soul” and “Firelight,” are vintage Thievery Corporation with a Brazilian twist: deeply groovy and endlessly mesmerizing.

///////

Bobby Lyle • The Way I Feel

Pianist and composer Bobby Lyle's first encounter with the great Hammond B-3 player Jimmy Smith was in a Minneapolis nightclub called Big Al's, where the then-teenaged Lyle performed as the "local talent" on the downstairs stage. Upstairs, Smith was playing as the headliner and Lyle, after finishing his set as quickly as possible, raced upstairs to hear Smith and perhaps shake his hand.

"Jimmy was a black belt in karate," says Lyle of that first meeting. "So when he shook my hand, he almost broke my little fingers!"

Lyle would go on to teach himself the organ on the job by playing organs he came across in Minneapolis' nightclubs, including the occasional strip club. There are some things you just can't learn in a music conservatory.

The Way I Feel, is Lyle's tribute to Smith—who, shortly after that memorable first handshake, became a personal mentor and friend to the young organist/pianist. This recording, Lyle's first since 2006, may come as a surprise to those who know him only for his beautifully arranged and produced chart-topping albums of jazz, funk, fusion, and so-called smooth jazz, as it is the first album where Lyle plays Hammond B-3 organ on every track.

The CD is also a tribute to the great guitarist Wes Montgomery, who recorded several popular, genre-busting albums with Smith back in the sixties. Houston-based guitarist Brennen Nase steps up and steps into Montgomery's role and his playing is a joy to hear. Montgomery's sound and technique—not to mention right hand thumb—were truly one of a kind. Nase easily navigates what amounts to several decades of guitar history, channeling Montgomery on the standard "Baby It's Cold Outside" and the Lyle-penned tribute, "Feelin' Wes," bringing some inspired funk to Lyle's "Horizon," and stepping on the distortion pedal for "Hard Workin' Man," which includes some vocals from Lyle and the CD's featured drummer, Patrick Williams.

Not content to just recreate a 1965 Verve recording session, Lyle brings the Hammond B-3's legacy into the 21st century for a program that includes New Orleans second line, gospel, and even sixties-era go-go music. The playing on The Way I Feel is tight and inspired and Lyle's organ playing burns throughout.

Smith may arguably be responsible for making the Hammond B-3 a "viable lead jazz instrument," but with The Way I Feel, Lyle and his co-conspirators carry that legacy and kick it into a funky future.

Track Listing: The Cat; Feelin' Wes; Baby It's Cold Outside; Diddley Boom Boom (French Quarter Strut); B's Bop; Horizon; The Way I Feel; On The Fly; Hard Workin' Man; Walk On The Wild Side.

Personnel: Bobby Lyle: Hammond B-3 organ, acoustic piano, synthesizer; Brennen Nase: guitar; Patrick Williams: drums; Mark Simmons: drums; Mark Prince: drums; Keith Vivens: bass; Milton Comeaux: percussion.

///////

Lista de canciones: The Cat; Feelin' Wes; Baby It's Cold Outside; Diddley Boom Boom (French Quarter Strut); B's Bop; Horizon; The Way I Feel; On The Fly; Hard Workin' Man; Walk On The Wild Side.

Althea Rene • Flawsome

Album Notes
This spectacular project combines the "soulful Detroit fire" that the motor city is known for, with the silky appeal that smooth jazz fans adore. The musicianship is top-notch and the collaboration of such renowned guest artists helps to make this CD so powerful.

Detroit, Michigan born flutist Althea Rene has never regretted having chosen music as her purpose in life. With Flute Talk in 2000, Chocolate Rush (2003), In The Moment (2006), No Restrictions (2008), In The Flow (2013), Live In Detroit (2015) and Unstoppable (2017) she can look back on a remarkable discography. Now her new album Flawsome (2019) delivers the next paving stone of her street to glory.

Althea explains the title Flawsome as something or someone that is extraordinary because of its imperfections. The album is elaborately designed. Demetrius Nabors, Chris “Big Dog” Davis, & Lew Laing are listed as responsible producers. In addition to Althea, who plays the flute as her favorite instrument, are named as musicians on selected tracks Demetrius Nabors (keyboards), Robert Skinner (bass), Gary Johnson, Andrew Freeman and Jas Miller (guitar), Nate Winn, Eric Valentine (drums), Chris “Big Dog” Davis, Lew Laing (drum programming, keyboard bass, keyboards, rhythm arrangements), Euge Groove, Jeanette Harris (sax), Andrew Dorsett (keyboard and programming) and Dwight Adams (trumpet).

The sumptuous line-up is immediately noticeable in the quality of the music.  Inner Circle starts with an introduction in George Duke style followed by a high-quality tune with excellent musicianship of all participating musicians. Althea offers multilayered flutes in spectacular overdub.

Rock with You is a song written by British songwriter Rod Temperton and recorded for Michael Jackson's album Off The Wall. The smooth jazz genre knows covers by Everette Harp, Inaki Arakistain, Darren Rahn or Chuck Loeb. Which approach should be used to interpret this well-known melody? Althea chooses a chorus line of her magic flutes perfectly embedded by Chris “Big Dog” Davis.

When you like Stevie Wonder's Pastime Paradise then you will the Spanish flavored Passion. I don't know who is Barbara Mae. A living person or fictive. However Euge Groove and Althea offer a maximum of authenticity and emotionality. Althea explains: Barbara Mae is her mother. Jump To It is a sparkling dance floor hit that will surely fill the hearts of all dancers.

Flawsome is a very memorable title, although it doesn't fit on the title song at all. Althea once again shows her distinct sense for perfect harmony in the multiple sound of her flute. We Are One is a masterpiece by Frankie Beverly and also the title of the same named album by Bay Area-based R&B group Maze, released in 1983 on Capitol Records. The interpretation sees Jeanette Harris in the lead in replacement of Frankie's vocal recitation followed by Althea on flute. Romel Veal on guitar and Eric Valentine on drums deliver the original Maze feeling.

If Chris "Big Dog" Davis has one thing on his plate, it's the catchy R&B groove. Let Me Love You is tailor-made for Althea. With Life On Mars, Althea reaches far back into the past. Back in 1976, Dexter Wansel, keyboardist for O'Jays, the Stylistics, and the Intruders, released his groundbreaking debut album Life On Mars. Althea means it seriously with the Funk. She blends her flute with Dwight Adam's trumpet to a flawless brass arrangement and rises on her solo to a splendid Ian Anderson level.

Althea Rene's album Flawsome serves classy renditions with original compositions of enduring quality performed on a ultra-high standard. You cannot dig deeper to find a better album.

Con Flute Talk en 2000, Chocolate Rush (2003), In The Moment (2006), No Restrictions (2008), In The Flow (2013), Live In Detroit (2015) e Unstoppable (2017) ella puede mirar hacia atrás en una discografía notable.

En 1976, Dexter Wansel, teclista de O'Jays, the Stylistics, and the Intruders, lanzó su innovador álbum debut Life On Mars.

Vibes Alive • After Hours

The vibraphone was developed in the '20's and found soon the way to jazz musicians. Jazz legends like Lionel Hampton, Gary Burton, Milt Jackson, Cal Tjader and Dave Samuels made the instrument popular. In the acid jazz genre interprets are besides the famous Roy Ayers, Roger Beaujolais (The Beaujolais Band, Vibraphonic) and Mike Benn (Duboniks). Vibraphone players of the smooth jazz genre are Michael Ortega and Dirk Richter.

Vibist Dirk Richter joined Randall Crissman, a guitar playing television and movie composer. Both founded the group Vibes Alive called after their first album, which was released in 1997 on Syndrome Records. Guest-musicians on this ambitious album were Jeff Lorber, Luis Conte, Jimmy Johnson, Jimmy Haslip and Carlos Vega. After a long hiatus of eleven years Vibes Alive is back with their sophomore album After Hours (2008). Guests on the new album are Jeff Lorber, Luis Conte, Vinnie Colaiuta, Jimmy Johnson and Gary Meek. According to Dirk Richter, the music is about “going back to the basics of creating music.”

The album starts with the up-tempo Lighthouse. Dirk Richter defines the theme on the vibraphone, while Jeff Lorber answers on the Wurlitzer electric piano. This tune will be released as first single.

After Hours is featuring saxophonist Gary Meek, who accompanies Dirk's performance in a smooth intimate way. Dirk Richter prefers short themes with a hypnotic repetition. These themes are usually the starting point for short solos.

The romantic ballade Hard To Say Goodbye calms down listener's mood. On Lunch Track Jeff Lorber's performs on the Wurlitzer piano and the clavinet. Piano and vibes are complementing each other perfectly.

Tunes like Open Door reveal the brilliant arrangement of all instruments running seamlessly in each other. Sambahia (Samba and Bahia) brings some Brazilian flavor. While Luis Conte and Vinnie Colaiuta hold up the Bossa Nova flag, Dirk Richter (vibes) and Garry Meek (flute) shines with mesmerizing solos.

We can enjoy the luckiest moments in the shady or sunny places of our gardens. In The Garden reminds of these moments with a refreshing melody. Bright Lights features trumpet player Bob Summer, who accompanies Dirk so perfectly that you have to listen closely to recognize that two instrumentalists are performing. Randall Crissmann adds a furious guitar solo with a distortion note.

Like the colorful flower Magnolia grows this tune with all its blooms in your mind. Walk Away streams from a theme, which is repeated by the instruments in swinging and vibrations like church bells.

The final Blew Blues is a short excursion into blues and jazz. A great jam session with much interaction and improvisation. A coherent sound of professional musicians.

We clearly recognize, the return of vibraphone is overdue. After Hours is the first step for the renaissance of vibes. A restoration build by Vibes Alive.

///////

Krzysia Gorniak • Emotions

Review:
Krzysia Górniak is the most recognizable guitarist in Poland. Jazz music has been her passion for many years. This talented artist has recently recorded her new studio album "Emotions". It is a musical image full of bright colors in an extremely subtle form. Of course, the new disc is not without energy, it also contains many positive vibrations and harmony to the ear. Krzysia Górniak, a flesh and jazz jazzman, gave the listeners an interesting stylistic mix, so "Emotions" is filled with groove, funk, soul and pop sounds. This remarkable album will definitely win the hearts of jazz lovers, but I think not only. Also noteworthy is the work of the rhythm section and piano, which give the compositions space. Zdzisław Kalinowski (piano), Michał Grott (bass guitar) and Przemek Knopik (drums) were responsible for these treatments.

The sophisticated artistry of the game can be heard in virtually every song. The sounds are quite diverse - from very standard, typically jazz notes played on the guitar with muffled tones, to quite strong sounds in distortions more in the style of fusion. Krzysia Górniak is a truly unique Polish guitarist who performs her art at the highest world level.

Dirk Richter • Vibes Alive

Review by Jonathan Widran
Keyboardist Jeff Lorber's bluesy, retro-funk production techniques have pushed numerous genre stars -- from Eric Marienthal to the late Art Porter -- to great creative heights, and he adds a similarly soulful energy to the solid debut of vibist Dirk Richter. Named Vibes Alive, a title which captures the lighthearted, loose ensemble nature of the tunes, the album makes a great case for the mallet instrument as a viable smooth jazz vehicle. While Dave Samuels' solos with Spyro Gyra may be the only exposure genre audiences have had to the warm, tropical tones of the vibes, they have always been in counterpoint to the saxophone. Here, Richter takes charge, carrying cool melodies atop those trademark Lorber rhythms and harmonies on '70s throwbacks like the Hammond B-3 and the Wurlitzer electric piano. Richter gets the tropical thing going at times, but more impressively, he's equally proficient as a jazz soloist and in the funky urban mode. Other studio heavyweights like Luis Conte, Jimmy Johnson, and Jimmy Haslip participate, but aside from Lorber, it's co-producer and guitarist Randall Crissman whose soloing makes the most striking impression.

Philippe Saisse Trio • The Body And Soul Sessions

By 2006, the smooth jazz genre's obsession with cover songs was reaching a somewhat ridiculous fever pitch, but the success of recordings like Kirk Whalum's The Babyface Songbook and Rick Braun's Yours Truly proved that listeners loved them. With the intensely likeable, high-spirited, super swinging Body and Soul Sessions, the French born funk-jazz keyboardist whips up an all-cover collection even the biggest skeptic can enjoy. This is due not only to the lively, imaginative arrangements, but also the long awaited opportunity to hear Saisse -- who often favors big swirls of sound, bold sonic textures, and wild. trippy effects -- strip down and play melodies and improvisations straightforwardly on piano and Fender Rhodes. There are a few subtle synth washes here and there -- most notably, on a graceful cover of Bill Withers' "Lovely Day," but these are in perfect service to his gorgeous piano runs and the cool rhythms of acoustic bassist David Finck and drummer Scooter Warner. The song selection is pretty fascinating as well, with a gorgeous rendition of the title track being the only true jazz standard. Otherwise, the trio is balancing pure, playful '60s and '70s pop and soul (the ultra-retro "Do It Again," "September," "Lady Madonna," "We're All Alone") with inspired oddities like "Harley Davidson" (giving a joyous Ramsey Lewis vibe to a clapalong composed by Frenchman Serge Gainsbourg) and "The Dolphin." In his liner notes, vibes master Gary Burton laments the fact that Saisse once upon a time chose piano over vibes as his primary instrument -- to the delight of thousands of fans worldwide. This new trio format finally gives Saisse a chance to just do his thing without the burden of creating a sonic circus around it.

Bradley Leighton • Back To The Funk

Bradley Leighton’s musical interests have always been diverse.  As a young man, he loved big band music, particularly Maynard Ferguson, Stan Kenton and Woody Herman. Yet he also found himself drawn to the R&B sounds of Tower of Power, Earth Wind and Fire, and, the Brecker Brothers.
Although his first fascination was the player piano, he soon started playing the flute, becoming very involved in school bands and with learning the classical literature.  Then, after considerable listening, and practicing; Bradley’s interest in Jazz and blues led him to hanging out at after-hours clubs in his native Seattle, where he first surprised, and pleased, such local legends as T McGee, Terry Camon, Leri Carter, Billy Haddon, and Mel Washington.
Having mentors both assist and encourage Bradley, and a true love of performing, served as the catalysts for his decision to pursue a career in music. Immediately after high school, he seized an opportunity by enlisting and playing in the Army’s 9th Infantry Division band at Ft. Lewis, Washington. When his talent quickly became obvious, he was appointed musical director of the jazz ensemble. A tour with the 8th Army band in Seoul, Korea soon followed. Bradley remained in Seoul after his discharge several years later to teach, and perform in the country’s only Jazz bar.
But after realizing that the only place to really utilize his musical expertise was the land of his birth, Bradley returned to Seattle for more professional opportunities. By now, an accomplished musician and teacher, he spent the next fifteen years playing in rhythm and blues bands, Hammond organ trios, funk dance bands and straight-ahead jazz groups. He also taught privately, working with encouraging young musicians, just as his Seattle mentors had done for him.
At the same time, he focused on developing his own sound on the flute. His approach was born in his big band roots, where accomplished reedman took their saxophone experience to the flute. Inspired by such legends as Frank Wess and Sam Most, Bradley found that the alto flute was the best vehicle for his creativity.
During this period, he worked in bands that accompanied such legendary artists as Bobby McFerrin, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie and others in addition to jamming and playing with many of the local musicians.  He became Seattle’s first call jazz flutists, and developed a reputation as one of the leading players in the area.
After moving to San Diego in 2001, Bradley started work on his first CD, “Grooveyard” which was released in 2003 to excellent reviews from the jazz world. Five subsequent projects ranging from straight-ahead jazz to R&B, Funk, Pop and Christmas music reinforce his reputation as a player who can and will play from any genre that interests him and his fans.
In addition to recording and performing, Bradley Leighton has continued to share his knowledge and enthusiasm of music as a clinician and teacher. Besides private lessons, he leads workshops for musicians of all skill levels, including, “Improvisation for the Classically Trained Flutist,” and “Music For Life – Improvisation for the Adult Amateur Musician.”
Bradley Leighton performs weekly at Seaport Village in downtown San Diego, California, as well as at other venues in and around San Diego County. He’s also available for clinics, and in performance with his Duo, Quartet and Sextet, as well as a soloist with big bands and orchestras.

///////

VA • A Twist of Jobim

Review by Scott Yanow
The debut release from the I.E. label (which is connected with Polygram) is an unusual multi-artist tribute to the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. Some of his tunes are made funky (but in a melodic and tasteful way), while others become quiet (but still passionate) ballads. The treatments are all jazz-oriented, and there is plenty of solo space for the likes of guitarist Lee Ritenour (in one of his finest jazz efforts), pianists Dave Grusin and Alan Pasqua, altoist Eric Marienthal, bassist Christian McBride, and tenor saxophonist Ernie Watts. Plus, there are guest spots for Herbie Hancock (an excellent acoustic piano solo on "Stone Flower"), the sopranos of Art Porter (on "Dindi") and Steve Tavaglione, the Yellowjackets (who team up with Ritenour on "Mojave"), singer El DeBarge ("Dindi") and the vocal duo of Al Jarreau and Oleta Adams ("Waters of March" and a lightweight rendition of "The Girl from Ipanema"). Nearly every song holds one's interest, the melodies are celebrated, and the fresh interpretations contain more than their share of surprises.
https://www.allmusic.com/album/a-twist-of-jobim-mw0000616318

This appropriately "smooth jazz" tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim is perhaps one of the best that's come out over the last few years. Like many of Jobim's records, it goes down like a smooth, relaxing drink. Producer, arranger and nominal leader guitarist Lee Ritenour has collected some fine talent, particularly frequent collaborator Dave Grusin, and crafted some very nice moments throughout. Highlights include "Water to Drink" (featuring Ritenour and Grusin), "Captain Bacardi" (an old Ritenour / Grusin staple with Eric Marienthal), "Lamento" (featuring Ernie Watts and Christian McBride) and "Mojave" (with the Yellowjackets and Ritenour). All lend their individual, and often surprisingly distinctive, talents to the collective soul of Jobim's beautiful melodies.

Much to his credit, Ritenour favors some of Jobim's fine, less exploited, tunes. The nicest surprise of all, though, is Herbie Hancock's smoking rendition of "Stone Flower," Jobim's truly under-appreciated maze of rhythm and chord changes from 1970. Hancock, who's lately made a career of inclusion among Jobim tributes, gets his only feature here and it's truly worth the price of admission. Hancock's dynamic playing, reminiscent of his work with Milton Nascimento, is as muscular and as sensitive as Jobim's tricky romance suggests. Although I could do without the vocals and the vocalists (El DeBarge on "Dindi," Al Jarreau and Oletta Adams on the annoying "Waters of March" and "Girl from Ipanema"), each singer, especially Jarreau, fits well into Jobim's universe, ably suggesting the romantic shores of Ipanema.

Great song choices (though I would've traded "Girl from Ipanema" for "A Felicidade") and a sensitive cast of talented players make A Twist Of Jobim worth at least a listen or two.

https://www.allmusic.com/album/a-twist-of-jobim-mw0000616318

Steve Khan • Borrowed Time

Biography
by Matt Collar
Guitarist Steve Khan is a gifted jazz-based performer whose adept skills have found him working with his own groups and as an in-demand session artist. Born in Los Angeles in 1947, Khan grew up in a musical family, the son of famed lyricist Sammy Cahn. Initially, he studied drums and piano in his adolescence before settling on the guitar around age 20. He honed his skills while attending U.C.L.A., after which he moved to New York City and quickly found work in variety of jazz, pop, and R&B settings. During this period he shared the stage with such luminaries as Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich, the Brecker Brothers, Joe Zawinul's Weather Update, and others.

As a recording artist, Khan made his debut alongside fellow guitarist Larry Coryell on 1976's Two for the Road. He then delivered several well-received albums for Columbia, including 1977's Tightrope, 1978's The Blue Man, and 1979's Arrows. Also during this period, he found session work appearing on albums by Ashford & Simpson, Rupert Holmes, Steely Dan, and Billy Joel. In 1980, he delivered the Thelonious Monk-themed Evidence. A year later, he formed the fusion quartet Eyewitness, which continued to work throughout the 1980s. Several more well-regarded albums followed in the '90s, including 1992's Headline, 1994's Crossings, and 1997's Got My Mental with John Patitucci and Jack DeJohnette.

He then joined the Caribbean Jazz Project for 2000's New Horizons and 2001's Paraiso. Khan returned to his solo work in 2006, reuniting with DeJohnette and Patitucci for The Green Field, followed by 2007's Borrowed Time. He then brought along fellow Eyewitness alums Anthony Jackson, Dennis Chambers, and Manolo Badrena for 2011's Parting Shot, followed in 2014 by the salsa-infused Subtext. In 2016 he released Backlog, which featured guest spots from longtime associates like Randy Brecker, Bob Mintzer, Mike Mainieri, and others.
