Shirley Scott • Soul Sister

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Scott studied trumpet and piano in school. As a performer in the 1950s, she played the Hammond B-3 organ. Her recordings with Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis included the hit "In the Kitchen". Influenced by gospel and blues, she played soul jazz in the 1960s with Stanley Turrentine, who became her husband during the same decade; the couple divorced in 1971.
Although organ trios declined in popularity during the 1970s, they resurged in the 1980s and she recorded again. In the 1990s, she recorded as pianist in a trio and performed at venues in Philadelphia. She was also a jazz educator.
Scott won an $8 million settlement in 2000 against American Home Products, the manufacturers of the diet drug fen-phen. She died of heart failure in 2002.
On June 25, 2019, The New York Times Magazine listed Shirley Scott among hundreds of artists whose material was reportedly destroyed in the 2008 Universal fire.

Brother Jack McDuff •‎ Tough 'Duff

Review  by Scott Yanow
Organist Jack McDuff's second set as a leader teams him with tenor saxophonist Jimmy Forrest, vibraphonist Lem Winchester (an unusual addition for this type of soul-jazz set), and drummer Bill Elliott. This CD reissue finds the group playing fairly basic material, including a pair of McDuff originals, "Smooth Sailing" and "Autumn Leaves." McDuff, Forrest, and Winchester have no difficulty chewing up the chord changes, and although no real surprises occur, the results are typically swingin' and groovin'.

Lem Winchester Sextet featuring Oliver Nelson • Lem's Beat

Review by Scott Yanow
Lem Winchester, an ill-fated vibraphonist who was influenced musically by Milt Jackson, teams up with tenor saxophonist Oliver Nelson, altoist Curtis Peagler and a fine rhythm section for a good straight-ahead date that has been reissued on CD. Nelson emerges as the most distinctive solo voice, and since he contributed three of the six songs, the tenorman's musical personality dominates this set. Winchester shows much potential that, due to his untimely death in early 1961, was never fulfilled. Good bop-based music.

Lem Winchester & Benny Golson • Winchester Special

Review by Scott Yanow
This excellent CD reissue features the ill-fated vibraphonist Lem Winchester teamed up with tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Wendell Marshall and drummer Art Taylor for three standards, an obscurity and two of the leader's originals. The music falls between bop and hard bop with consistently swinging solos that are generally fairly inventive. This was one of Winchester's three recordings for the New Jazz label; all are easily recommended to straightahead jazz fans.

Lem Winchester • Another Opus

Review by Scott Yanow
Vibraphonist Lem Winchester died on January 13, 1961, after an accident with a gun. Although he did not stick around long enough to carve out his own original voice (remaining influenced to a large degree by Milt Jackson), Winchester did record several worthy albums during his final couple of years. This set, which has been reissued on CD in the OJC series, was one of his last and best. Winchester -- in a quintet with flutist Frank Wess, pianist Hank Jones, bassist Eddie Jones, and drummer Gus Johnson -- is in swinging and creative form on three of his originals, Oliver Nelson's "The Meetin'," and the standard "Like Someone in Love." A bonus cut from October 14, 1960, finds Winchester playing "Lid Flippin'" with a quintet that features organist Johnny "Hammond" Smith. Overall this album is one of Lem Winchester's definitive sets.

Johnny 'Hammond' Smith • Talk That Talk

Johnny “Hammond” Smith was the most subtle of the organists to emerge in the 1950s, as he displays on the two sessions combined on this compact disc. He also possessed the most lyrical gift as a composer, which tracks as diverse as “Bennie’s Diggin’,” “Just Say So Long,” and “Dementia” bear out; as well as the flexibility to work in a variety of ensemble contexts. Here he hosts separate encounters with two musicians he had proven his mettle with on Oliver Nelson’s Taking Care of Business (OJC-1784). Nelson himself is a featured guest on three tracks where Smith works with bass (the great George Tucker) but no guitar, plus Ray Barretto’s congas; while vibraphonist Lem Winchester creates a most winning and unusual blend with the organist on the second session.

Shirley Scott • Now's The Time

Review:
Now's the Time is an album by organist Shirley Scott compiling several tracks recorded between 1958 and 1964 and released on the Prestige label in 1967. "This is early Scott, several takes from different sessions for this Prestige release", Allmusic.

Yes once upon a time jazz was a man's world but with gals like Shirley Scott around some of the cats are beginning to get inferiority complexes. Like isn't a woman's place in the kitchen! Not when she happens to be Shirley Scott. Her latest cooking is done on a Hammond, not a stove. ~ extract from Liner Notes by Mark Gardner.

Oliver Nelson • Taking Care Of Business

Complete Bio

Album Review by Scott Yanow
Oliver Nelson would gain his greatest fame later in his short life as an arranger/composer but this superior session puts the emphasis on his distinctive tenor and alto playing. In a slightly unusual group (with vibraphonist Lem Winchester, organist Johnny "Hammond" Smith, bassist George Tucker and drummer Roy Haynes), Nelson improvises a variety of well-constructed but spontaneous solos; his unaccompanied spots on "All the Way" and his hard-charging playing on the
medium-tempo blues "Groove" are two of the many highpoints.
