Clifton Chenier • 60 Minutes With The King of Zydeco

Review
This album is Arhoolie's attempt to create a posthumous greatest hits compilation for the king of zydeco, presenting the 15 best-sellers from their catalog. As such, all of the best songs from Chenier's days are available together here, ranging from slower blues to high speed party-based zydeco. Any fan of Chenier (or zydeco in general) should look into this album for its breadth over the years. Aside from that, single albums are probably better suited for most purposes. If someone just wants one comprehensive Clifton Chenier album in their collection, however, this is the one to have.

Revisar

Buckwheat Zydeco • On a Night Like This

Review by Adam Greenberg
A relatively basic album of party-based zydeco from the heir apparent to the throne after the death of Clifton Chenier. The nice thing about Buckwheat Zydeco's (Stanley Dural's) albums is the broader diversity that he uses as far as the compositions are concerned. Along with his own compositions on this album are bits from Booker T ("Time Is Tight"), the Blasters ("Marie Marie"), and Bob Dylan ("On a Night Like This"). To accompany his own band, a portion of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band fills in on horns throughout the album, much to the credit of the finished sound. The album is jumping, just the way it's supposed to. This is certainly one of Buckwheat's best albums, right in with Where There's Smoke, There's Fire. Pick it up for a high energy album of Louisiana's party music.

Where There's Smoke, There's Fire".

Chubby Carrier & The Bayou Swamp Band • Black Pot

Review from OffBeat Magazine (by Dan Willging):
Despite its perplexing black skillet cover, Black Pot is Chubby Carrier's most unusual and selfless release of his extensive discography. Admittedly, he didn't have enough material to head back into the studio, but Bayou Swamp Band drummer Jayme Romain did, hence an album of all Romain originals. As a result, most of this is radically different from anything Carrier has ever waxed but better positions him in the contemporary zydeco market.

The first two tracks, the infectiously festive "Blackpot" and the slaying funky grooves of "No Time," are absolutely killer. Romain handles the lion's share of vocals with Carrier singing on only four tracks. Romain often exudes charisma with his originals touching various shades of modern zydeco, like the R&B-tinged "The Reason Why" with its R&B background vocals and the Temptations-recalling "Nothing Like My Girl." A few tunes are classic enough to fit Carrier like a glove.

Obviously, Carrier isn't the uptight control freak. On the breezy, soulish "Who You," bassman Randall Jackson plays the smaller, single-row squeezebox, as opposed to Carrier's beefy triple-row variety, for a change-up in sound. "Dancing with a Feeling" is novel when you realize both Carrier's triple and Jackson's single-row accordions are on the same track, which is practically unheard of.

By the time "Offshore Shuffle" rolls around, it all makes sense. It's a tribute to Carrier's late father/accordionist Roy who, for years, hosted Thursday night jams at his Offshore Lounge that helped many budding accordionists, like Beau Jocque, on their way. In a way, this is an extension of that.

Clifton Chenier • Bayou Blues

Review by Thom Owens
Bayou Blues compiles a selection of 12 tracks Clifton Chenier cut for Specialty Records in 1955, including the original versions of "Boppin' the Rock," "Eh, Petite Fille," "I'm On My Way" and "Zodico Stomp." It may not be a definitive retrospective, but it's an entertaining and necessary sampler of Chenier at the beginning of his career -

The Accordion in the Americasː Klezmer, Polka, Tango, Zydeco, and More!

An invention of the Industrial Revolution, the accordion provided the less affluent with an inexpensive, loud, portable, and durable "one-man-orchestra" capable of producing melody, harmony, and bass all at once. Imported from Europe into the Americas, the accordion with its distinctive sound became a part of the aural landscape for millions of people but proved to be divisive: while the accordion formed an integral part of working-class musical expression, bourgeois commentators often derided it as vulgar and tasteless. This rich collection considers the accordion and its myriad forms, from the concertina, button accordion, and piano accordion familiar in European and North American music to the exotic-sounding South American bandoneón and the sanfoninha. Capturing the instrument's spread and adaptation to many different cultures in North and South America, contributors illuminate how the accordion factored into power struggles over aesthetic values between elites and working-class people who often were members of immigrant and/or marginalized ethnic communities. Specific histories and cultural contexts discussed include the accordion in Brazil, Argentine tango, accordion traditions in Colombia, cross-border accordion culture between Mexico and Texas, Cajun and Creole identity, working-class culture near Lake Superior, the virtuoso Italian-American and Klezmer accordions, Native American dance music, and American avant-garde. Contributors are María Susana Azzi, Egberto Bermúdez, Mark DeWitt, Joshua Horowitz, Sydney Hutchinson, Marion Jacobson, James P. Leary, Megwen Loveless, Richard March, Cathy Ragland, Helena Simonett, Jared Snyder, Janet L. Sturman, and Christine F. Zinni.

Lynn August & The Hot August Knights • Zydeco Groove

Biography by Jason Ankeny
One of zydeco's most versatile performers, Lynn August spiked his native southwestern Louisiana sound with elements of pop, gospel and R&B. Born in Lafayette on August 7, 1948, the blind August was encouraged by his mother to pursue a career in music, and he was raised on a steady diet of zydeco, New Orleans rhythm and blues and swamp-pop. After learning to play drums on an old wash basin, at the age of 12 he was recruited to play percussion with the legendary Esquerita, who convinced him to also take up the piano; a few years later, August made the switch to the Hammond B-3 organ as well. During the mid-1960s, he played with a young Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural, later mounting a solo career as well as sitting in with a variety of local swamp-pop combos; he also led a big band, and even directed a church choir. In 1988, August turned to the accordion and began his zydeco career in earnest; forming the Hot August Knights with tenor saxophonist John Hart, he also studied field recordings made in 1934 by archivist Alan Lomax to absorb the original Creole style of "jure" singing into his own contemporary aesthetic. After signing to the Maison de Soul label, August debuted with It's Party Time, followed in 1989 by Zydeco Groove; a move to Black Top heralded the release of 1992's Creole Cruiser, with the acclaimed Sauce Piquante appearing a year later.
