Billy Larkin & The Delegates • Hold On!

Organist Billy Larkin and The Delegates immediately came to the attention of the Los Angeles jazz audience when their first record was released, but they also picked up a larger audience when the teenagers discovered they could dance to it. Just as Ramsey Lewis, they had an appeal that far exceeded just the jazz listener.
Basically a jazz trio with heavy emphasis on the blues, Billy Larkin and The Delegates was a versatile and dynamic group that reached into all corners of music to come up with a style and an approach that is both fresh and distinctive.

Bill Doggett ‎• The Doggett Beat For Happy Feet

Biography
With his instrumental hit "Honky Tonk" in February 1956, Bill Doggett (born William Ballard Doggett) created one of rock's greatest instrumental tracks. Although it generated scores of offers to perform in rock & roll clubs throughout the United States, Doggett remained tied to the jazz and organ-based R&B that he had performed since the 1930s. Continuing to record for the Cincinnati-based King label until 1960, he went on to record for Warner Brothers, Columbia, ABC-Paramount and Sue. His last session came as a member and producer of an all-star jazz/R&B group, Bluesiana Hurricane in 1995. Born on the north side of Philadelphia, Doggett struggled with poverty as a youngster. Although he initially dreamed of playing the trumpet, his family was unable to afford lessons. Persuaded by his mother (a church pianist), to try keyboards instead, he quickly mastered the instrument. Hailed as a child prodigy by his 13th birthday, he formed his first band, the Five Majors, at the age of 15. Performing with the Jimmy Gorman Band, the pit orchestra at the Nixon Grand Theater, while still in high school, Doggett assumed leadership of the group in 1938. The experience was brief, however, as Doggett sold the orchestra to Lucky Millinder, with whom he continued to work off and on for the next four years. He made his recording debut on Millinder's tracks, "Little Old Lady From Baltimore" and "All Aboard" in 1939. Although he formed a short-lived orchestra with Benny Goodman's arranger, Jimmy Mundy, in late 1939, Doggett continued to work primarily as a sideman. Playing piano and arranging for the Ink Spots from 1942 until 1944, he went on to arrange tunes for Count Basie's band and tour and/or record with Coleman Hawkins, Johnny Otis, Wynonie Harris, Ella Fitzgerald and Lionel Hampton. Replacing Wild Bill Davis in Louis Jordan's band, in 1947, he appeared on the influential tunes, "Saturday Night Fish Fry" and "Blue Light Boogie." He made his debut as an organist during June 1951 recording sessions with Ella Fitzgerald. Debuting his own organ-led combo at New York nightclub, the Baby Grand, in June 1952, Doggett recorded more than a dozen singles before striking gold with "Honky Tonk" four years later. A longtime resident of Long Island, New York, Doggett died on November 13, 1996, three days after suffering a heart attack. ~ Craig Harris

~ Craig Harris

Victor Feldman • A Taste Of Honey And A Taste Of Bossa Nova

Victor Feldman was born in Edgware, Middlesex in 1934.
He caused a sensation as a musical prodigy when he was “discovered” at age 7. His family were all musical and his father founded the Feldman Swing Club in London in 1942 to showcase his talented son. His first professional appearance was playing drums at No 1 Rhythm Club as a member of the Feldman Trio with brothers Robert on clarinet and Monty on piano accordion. In 1944 he was featured at a concert with Glenn Miller's AAAF band, featured inevitably as “Kid Krupa”. Carlo Krahmer encouraged Feldman to play the vibes which he did first in the Ralph Sharon Sextet and later in the Roy Fox band. He worked in India in 1952 and 1953 in a band led by pianist Eddie Carroll. His vibraphone and conga drum playing were notable, but it was as a pianist that he became best known.

Before leaving the U.K. in 1955 to work in the U.S., Feldman recorded with Ronnie Scott's orchestra and quintet from 1954 to 1955, which also featured other important British jazz musicians such as Phil Seamen and Hank Shaw, among others. It was Scott who recommended that Feldman emigrate to the U.S., which he did in 1957. Once there, his first steady work was with the Woody Herman Herd. From there he went on to join Buddy DeFranco. He recorded with many different jazz artists, including Benny Goodman, George Shearing, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and Miles Davis, most notably on Davis' 1963 album Seven Steps to Heaven, the title tune being his own composition. The 5-CD Shelly Manne Black Hawk set, originally released on LP in September, 1959, is a good representation of Feldman's unmistakable driving “comping” behind the soloists, helping to define the session as a valuable hard bop genre element.

In 1957 Feldman settled in Los Angeles permanently and then specialized in lucrative session work for the US film and recording industry. He also branched out to work a variety of musicians outside of jazz, working with artists such as Frank Zappa in 1967, Steely Dan in the 1970s and Tom Waits and Joe Walsh in the 1980s. Feldman died at age 53, a year after the death of his wife, to whom he was completely devoted.

Lynn Hope & Clifford Scott • Juicy!

Review by Myles Boisen
Here's another must for sax instrumental buffs, with rare wax by Texas tenor Clifford Scott and balladeer Lynn Hope. You and a few million others heard Scott on Bill Doggett's classic "Honky Tonk"; here he is joined by organist Hank Marr, Charles Brown on piano, and other session cookers for five solid shufflin' sides. Lynn Hope is a different character -- a Muslim who admired the record-selling style of Earl Bostic, and in turn influenced a generation of ska hornsmen. In contrast to his lush romantic sound on "Stardust," "Tenderly," "Ghost of a Chance," etc., there's the bar-walkin' "Shockin'," jazzy "Juicy," swaggering "Little Landslide," and exotic "Sands of the Sahara." There are 20 tooters total and little duplication with Hope's Saxophonograph material.

Marv Jenkins Trio • Hollywood's Little Giant of Jazz

Best known as a pianist, Marvin Jenkins (1932-2005) was also a skilled flute player, tenor saxophonist, organist and a proficient composer. In the early 60s, in addition to working with guitarist Barney Kessels quartet, he recorded three excellent piano trio albums as leader.

The first, Marv Jenkins Arrives (1960), an auspicious debut on the small Los Angeles label Orovox, moved a&r Neal Hefti to sign him for Reprise Records, where he recorded A Tribute to My People (1961), and Good Little Man (1962). Bassists Jack Bruce and Stanley Gilbert and drummer Kenny Dennis contributed to the good groove achieved on both.

Jenkins touch was heavy and swinging, funky without being trite. Despite naming Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson as influences, he sounded like neither. The twelve selections of the fourth album in this set, Big City, produced by Palomar Records in 1965, served as good vehicles for his talents as pianist, singer and composer, in a groovy session backed by some West Coast jazz stalwarts. That year, still with Palomar, he had a hit single, Ive Got the Blues, added here as a bonus.

Jenkins was an underrated jazzman who spent 25 years of his career as an accompanist to singer/actress Della Reese, and is best known today for his piano work on Marvin Gayes classic 1973 recording Lets Get It On.

///////
