Warren Wolf • Incredible Jazz Vibes
Biography by Matt Collar
Baltimore's Warren Wolf is an acclaimed jazz vibraphonist known for his sophisticated, exploratory, nearly acrobatic post-bop style that moved one critic to exclaim that "he plays the vibraphone like an electric guitar!" Since 2005, he has been recording as a leader and touring with his own groups. His debut, Incredible Jazz Vibes for M&I Jazz, garnered attention from critics all over the globe. In 2007 he became a member of bassist Christian McBride's Inside Straight quintet. In 2011, Wolf signed a deal with Detroit's Mack Avenue label, and delivered his widely celebrated self-titled offering. After touring with the bassist, being an in-demand session player, and leading his own groups on tours of clubs and festival stages, Wolf issued Convergence in 2016; its lineup included McBride (who also acted as co-producer), Jeff "Tain" Watts, John Scofield, and Brad Mehldau.
Born in Baltimore in 1979, Wolf first began playing music at age three, studying vibraphone, marimba, drums, and piano with his father, a teacher and amateur musician. Focusing on classical music in his youth, Wolf attended the Peabody Preparatory School, during which time he also took lessons with former Baltimore Symphony Orchestra member Leo LePage.
It wasn't until his teens, while attending the Baltimore School for the Arts, that Wolf became increasingly interested in jazz. After high school, he earned his undergraduate music degree at Berklee College of Music in Boston, studying privately with vibraphonist Dave Samuels. Also during his time at Berklee, Wolf befriended trumpeter, classmate, and future collaborator Jeremy Pelt. Pelt introduced the vibraphonist to other fellow Berklee notables, including Kendrick Scott, Walter Smith III, and trumpeter Jason Palmer, with whom Wolf would co-lead a band at local club Wally's for most of his time in Boston.
After graduating in 2001, Wolf continued to gig around Boston, while also working as a percussion instructor at Berklee. In 2005 he returned to Baltimore, where he quickly established himself as an in-demand performer and bandleader. As a sideman, Wolf has performed and/or recorded with such luminaries as Bobby Watson, Christian McBride, Wynton Marsalis, Christian Scott, Robert Glasper, Esperanza Spalding, and others.
As a solo artist, Wolf made his debut in 2005 with the independently produced effort Incredible Jazz Vibes. He then signed with Mack Avenue Records and released his sophomore album, 2011's Warren Wolf. Two years later he returned with the quartet album Wolfgang in 2016, featuring appearances from pianist Benny Green, bassist McBride, and others. For the next several years Wolf was called upon often as a session and touring sideman. He appeared on Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah's Stretch Music and Willie Jones III's Groundwork in 2015. The following year he resumed his work as a bandleader with Convergence, featuring McBride, drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts, and pianist Brad Mehldau, as well guitarist John Scofield in a guest spot. Over the next four years, Wolf spent a lot of time in Europe. He played on a series of dates as a sideman including Andrea Motis' Emotional Dance, and Sarah McKenzie's Paris in the Rain. In the States he played on the SF Jazz Collective's Music of Miles Davis & Original Compositions, and T.K. Blue's Amour. He was a featured guest on the Rodney Green Quartet's Live at Jazzhus Montmartre Copenhagen in 2017, and played with the Ted Nash Quintet for Live at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola the following year. In the spring of 2020, Wolf released Reincarnation for Mack Avenue. Its title signified a shift in the artist's musical priorities. Here, he indulged his love for the R&B and soul music that served as the soundtrack to his formative years during the 90's (albeit in original jazz compositions). It featured lead and duet vocals by Imani-Grace Cooper and Marcellus "Bassman Shepard, fronting a quintet that included pianist Brett Williams' drummer Carroll "CV" Dashiell III, and bassist Richie Goods, with guitarist Mark Whitfield appearing as a guest on two tracks.

Woody Shaw • Time Is Right
"Although the quintet featured on this CD reissue from the Italian Red label was one of trumpeter Woody Shaw's finest, it failed to make much of an impact before breaking up. Teamed with trombonist Steve Turre, pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Stafford James and drummer Tony Reedus for an Italian concert, Shaw stretches out on two of his originals plus "You And The Night And The Music" and "We'll Be Together Again"; all four of the numbers clock in between 10-12 minutes apiece. High-quality advanced hard bop". - Scott Yanow

Woody Shaw Quintet • Lotus Flower
Review by Scott Yanow
This CD features one of trumpeter Woody Shaw's finest groups, a quintet with trombonist Steve Turre, pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Stafford James, and drummer Tony Reedus. The five-song program has an original apiece by each of the musicians (other than Reedus) with two by the leader. Shaw was one of the great trumpeters of all time, as he shows on such advanced yet swinging numbers as "Eastern Joy Dance," "Rahsaan's Run," and "Song of Songs." Virtually every Woody Shaw recording is well worth acquiring, including this one.

This album, which was recorded on February 2, 2004 in Barcelona, is truly a rare gem for the admirers of a man and piano player, who was loved by so many fans and the entire jazz global community. Woody Shaw • The Time Is Right
Review by Scott Yanow
Although the quintet featured on this CD reissue from the Italian Red label was one of trumpeter Woody Shaw's finest, it failed to make much of an impact before breaking up. High-quality advanced hard bop. https://www.allmusic.com/album/time-is-right-mw0000098485

Ralph Moore Quintet • Rejuvenate!
Review
by Scott Yanow
The group assembled for tenor saxophonist Ralph Moor's quintet date is perfect for his John Coltrane-inspired sound: trombonist Steve Turre (who also plays conch shells), pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith. The all-star lineup performs originals by Moore, Turre and Miller in addition to the title cut and "It Might As Well Be Spring" (a ballad feature for the tenor). The two horns blend together very well and consistently inspire each other; the rhythm section is state-of-the-art for this type of modern hard bop music, and the overall results are swinging and at times a bit adventurous. Recommended.

Recomendado.

Mulgrew Miller • With Our Own Eyes
Review by Scott Yanow
The consistent pianist Mulgrew Miller leads his trio (which includes bassist Richie Good and drummer Tony Reedus) through a set dominated by his originals but also including "Body and Soul" and Michel Legrand's "Summer Me, Winter Me." The McCoy Tyner influence will probably always remain a significant part of Miller's style but he is such a powerful player in his own right that one really does not mind. His originals on this set range from the model 6/4 piece "Somewhere Else" and the thoughtful "Dreamin'" to the melancholy "Carousel." As with all of Mulgrew Miller's releases thus far, this one is well worth picking up.

NHØP & Mulgrew Miller • The Duo - Live!
After admiring each other's playing from afar for years, Danish bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and American pianist Mulgrew Miller got together in 1999 to record a promotional album of Duke Ellington numbers for the hi-fi company Bang & Olufsen.
They enjoyed it so much that the following year they got together again for a world tour. This included the North Sea Jazz Festival at the Hague in Holland where the nine tracks on this fine double album were recorded.
Mik Neumann, Pedersen's sound engineer, found himself in awe at "the degree of profundity in their interplay—a talent that demands years of experience. At the same time, thanks to their ability to swing, and their inbred musicality, the music was also immediately accessible.
"Not once during the tour did they sit down and discuss what they were going to play—it materialized on stage, in the moment."
The set opens with Benny Golson's lovely minor key ballad, "Whisper Not," written in just 20 minutes while Golson was playing at George Wein's Storyville club in Boston with Dizzy Gillespie's big band.
Miller's opening statement of the theme reflects his gospel background in Mississippi when his main man was Ramsey Lewis. Later, as his technique grew more formidable, Miller began listening to Oscar Peterson, then—further down the line—McCoy Tyner. These influences can all be heard in his fascinating exploration of Golson's song.
Pedersen stays out of Miller's way on this one, but comes slowly to the fore as the set progresses with Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady," actually written as a tribute to three ladies, Duke's grade school teachers in Washington. "They taught all winter and toured Europe in the summer. To me that spelled sophistication," Ellington explained.
"Mood Indigo," which follows, starts obliquely, but then gets briskly down to business, though in the process changing the original intention of the number, written by Duke and clarinetist Barney Bigard as "Dreamy Blues." The title was later changed to accomodate Irving Mills' lyric.
It's a big ask for a duo—even one of this calibre—to hold an audience's interest and their version of Jerome Kern's "All The Things You Are" tends to ramble before Billy Strayhorn's "Take The A Train" puts things back on track. It's incredible to think that Duke's son Mercer rescued Strayhorn's masterpiece from a trash can where the author had discarded it because he thought it sounded too much like a Fletcher Henderson arrangement.
CD 2 kicks off with another Jerome Kern composition, "I'm Old Fashioned," featuring a beautiful introduction by Miller, who later tries just that little bit too hard to say something new about a ballad that's been recorded by legions of pianists.
Pedersen states the theme of Ellington's "Solitude" ably underpinned by Miller, with neither man straying too far from Duke's lovely, catchy melody.
