Steve Nelson Quartet • Communications

Nacido en Pittsburg, Pennsylvannia, en 1954, el vibrafonista Steve Nelson está considerado como uno de los músicos más versátiles de su generación. Aprendió en sus años jóvenes a tocar el piano y el vibráfono, y al poco tiempo ya actuaba con artistas de la talla del guitarrista Grant Green.

Estudió en la Rutgers University, y durante los años ochenta trabajó con Kenny Barron, Bobby Watson, David Newman y otros músicos de New York. También efectuó giras junto a George Shearing.

En la actualidad es miembro destacado de los grupos de Dave Holland, del sexteto de Mulgrew Miller (“Wingspan”) y del trio de Lewis Nash.

Ha grabado, como líder, un puñado de excelentes CD’s, como Live At Acireale (Red Records), Full Nelson (Sunnyside) y Communications (Criss Cross). También ha grabado junto a Mulgrew Miller, Lewis Nash, Dave Holland, David “Fathead” Newman, Kenny Barron, Jackie McLean y Johnny Griffin.

Con un concepto “orquestal” de su instrumento, Steve Nelson es el continuador en nuestros días de la gran saga de vibrafonistas afroamericanos que se inicia con Lionel Hampton y continúa con Milt Jackson y Bobby Hutcherson. Con un estilo fuertemente enraizado en el blues y el gospel, un conocimiento enciclopédico de los standards, y una capacidad de integrarse sin la menor dificultad en conceptos musicales contemporáneos, Steve Nelson es uno de los músicos mas completos en el panorama del Jazz de nuestros días.

Steve Nelson (born August 11, 1954 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an American vibraphonist, and has been a member of Dave Holland's Quintet and Big Band for over a decade. He graduated from Rutgers University with both Master's and Bachelor's degrees in music, and his teaching activities have included a position at Princeton University. He has appeared at concerts and festivals worldwide and has made recordings as the leader of his own group. As a resident of the New York City area he has performed and recorded with many musicians, including Kenny Barron, Bobby Watson, Mulgrew Miller, David "Fathead" Newman, Johnny Griffin, and Jackie McLean.
