Michel Sardaby • Night Cap

Review by Jeff Schwachter
Aside from playing and recording with American blues musicians like Sonny Boy Williamson and T-Bone Walker in the 1960s, the Caribbean-born jazz pianist Michel Sardaby recorded a few fine albums of his own. Night Cap, recorded in Paris in 1970, is one of his best known and features five originals and an eloquent rendition of Duke Ellington's "Satin Doll." Sardaby's trio, with Percy Heath on bass and Connie Kay on drums, brings a strong rhythmic sensibility and an appreciation for the blues to the pieces. There is a nocturnal quality to the album highlighted by the title track, the intense opener "Traveling On," and the meditative "I'm Free Again." This is a highly enjoyable album from an artist who worked with many American musicians throughout his career but was more appreciated abroad than in the United States, where most of his albums are only available as imports.

Michel Sardaby • In New York

Biography by Matt Collar
Caribbean-born pianist/composer Michel Sardaby is an adept jazz performer with a warm, sophisticated post-bop style. Born in Fort de France, Martinique in 1935, Sardaby grew up surrounded by music: His father owned a cafe and sold pianos. As a result, he played piano from a young age, and quickly revealed himself as a prodigy. Blanching under the strict tutelage of his private instructor, Sardaby initially stopped his piano studies, choosing instead to study art at the Boulle School in Paris. He eventually returned to his instrument full-time, and worked regularly throughout the '60s, playing with his own groups, and backing blues artists like T-Bone Walker, and Sonny Boy Williamson. As a leader, he made his recorded debut in the late '60s with the quartet session Five Cat's Blues and the live date Blue Sunset.

By the '70s, Sardaby was spending more time working in New York. His output picked up during this period with albums like 1970's Night Cap, a trio date featuring bassist Percy Heath and drummer Connie Kay. More well-regarded albums followed including 1974's Gail, recorded with bassist Richard Davis and drummer Billy Hart, and 1977's In New York, again with Davis as well as drummer Billy Cobham and percussionist Ray Barretto. These albums showcased both his lyricism and his growing interest in Latin and funk rhythms.

Although Sardaby stayed active, his recordings slowed over the next few years, before he returned with Caribbean Duet, a collaboration with pianist Monty Alexander. Going Places, a trio date with bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith, followed in 1989. A year later, he paired with bassist Jay Leonhart for Night Blossom. Straight On, a rare quintet date featuring trumpeter Louis Smith, saxophonist Ralph Moore, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Tony Reedus, appeared in 1993. Sardaby then moved to the Japanese label Sound Hills for a handful of efforts in the late '90s including Intense Moment, Classics & Ballads, and Voyage with bassist Ron Carter.

Since the early 2000s, Sardaby has recorded intermittently, issuing 2003's trio session Karen featuring bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Dion Parson, and At Home: Tribute to My Father, with bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Winard Harper. In 2006, the pianist celebrated his 70th birthday and a 50-plus-year career with the concert album A Night in Paris.

Michel Sardaby • Blue Sunset

Otros trabajos de Sardaby son Blue Sunset (1970), Night Blossom (1990), Karen (2003) y At Home Tribute to my Father (2004).

Michel Sardaby
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Michel Sardaby (born 4 September 1935) is a French jazz pianist.
Born in Fort-de-France, Martinique, he moved to Paris, where in March 1967, he was one of the pianists, the others being Joe "Stride" Turner, Errol Parker, Claude Bolling, Stuart de Silva, and Aaron Bridgers, accompanied on some tracks by bassist John Lamb, among others, who recorded the 90-minute session known as Tape for Billy, dedicated to Billy Strayhorn, who was in hospital. Duke Ellington, also in Paris, personally supervised the recording, although he didn't actually perform on it himself, and wanted to use the proceeds from its sale to create a Billy Strayhorn scholarship in Paris, similar to the one at Juilliard in New York.
In 1970, he led a trio comprising Percy Heath and Connie Kay which appeared on his debut album, Night Cap.
A 1972 New York recording has him leading a line-up comprising Richard Davis, Billy Cobham and Ray Barretto (Sound Hills Records 1997).
His 1974 album, Gail, won the 1976 Prix Boris Vian.[3] For his 1989 album, Going Places, he was accompanied by Rufus Reid and Marvin "Smitty" Smith, and in 1993, he recorded with his quintet comprising Ralph Moore, Louis Smith, Peter Washington and Tony Reedus.

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Good Deal is a typically fine record from the Three Sounds, who were beginning to hit their stride when this session was recorded in May of 1959. Like most of their records, it's laidback -- even when the group works a swinging tempo, there's a sense of ease that keeps the mood friendly, relaxed and mellow. Balancing standards like "Satin Doll," "Soft Winds" and "That's All" with bop ("Robbin's Nest" ), calypso ("St. Thomas" ) and originals, the Three Sounds cover a lot of stylistic territory, putting their distinctive stamp on each song. It's very accessible, pleasant soul-jazz and mainstream hard bop, but Gene Harris' masterful technique means that Good Deal rewards close listening as well.
