Bob Keene Septet & Lex Golden Jazz Octet • Solo for Seven - The Lex Golden Jazz Octet in Hi-Fi

Description from Fresh Sound Records / Jazz Hot (by Michel Laplace):
When clarinettist Bob Keene led an 18-piece orchestra in 1951 it was billed as one of the greatest bands since Artie Shaw's. Shaw gave it his stamp of approval and considered Keene to be a worthy successor. However, Keene's fame was fleeting and he's since faded into obscurity. But members of his septet heard here, such as Pepper Adams, Red Norvo and Shelly Manne, still register strongly in the collective memory. Standards from the likes of Kern, Loesser and Arlen are rearranged by Jack Montrose and provide us with 11 compact, highly melodic tracks delivered in cool jazz and swing style. The average length of each clocks in at 2.7 minutes. There's nothing long-winded about Bob Keene!

Prior to the recording of In Hi-Fi, trumpeter Lex Golden was all but unknown outside Los Angeles where he led dance bands in the city's nightspots. Golden peut swinguer ("Flip-Top"). Abe Most (1920-2002), Gene Cipriano (born 1929) and Lester Pinter form a saxophone section heavily influenced by Woody Herman's ("I Wished on the Moon"). Clarence E. Pete Carpenter (1914-1987) is a good trombonist and arranger ("Llama's Mama", "Mule Train", "Lot's O' Lex"). Cipriano and Pinter, both equally Lester Young-influenced, take solos in "Jeepers Creepers."

I Wished on the Moon").

Thad Jones • And the Danish Radio Big Band & Eclipse

The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band visited Scandinavia a couple of times and was a sensation. Later when Mel Lewis and Thad Jones had some difficulties Thad got an offer from the Danish Radio Big Band where his first season was (1977-78). Thad Jones wanted to play his own music and played as many as ten radio broadcasts per year at the Montmartre Club. At the same time he also started up his own big band, Eclipse, with his own repertoire, based at Jazzhus Slukefter in the Tivoli Garden. On this double CD you can hear both orchestras. There are many American musicians in the bands: Idrees Sulieman (tp) and Richard Boone (tb & vo) Tim Hagans (tp) Horace Parlan (p) Ed Thigpen (dr) Sahib Shihab (saxes) Emmanuel Rahim (congas) all living in Copenhagen at the time.
