Larry
Goldings is a Grammy-nominated pianist and composer. His organ trio
with Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart has been recognized in the New
York Times as "the best organ trio of the last decade." Goldings'
musical inspirations draw from a lifetime of absorbing jazz, pop, funk,
R&B, electronic and classical music.
As a performer and
recording artist, he is known for long-term collaborations that straddle
the realms of jazz and pop with such artists as Jim Hall, Maceo Parker,
John Scofield, Steve Gadd, Jack DeJohnette, Pat Metheny, Michael
Brecker, Sia Furler, John Mayer, and others.
Goldings has been
recording and touring with singer-songwriter James Taylor since 2001,
and is the featured musician on Taylor's One Man Band CD/DVD, the
culmination of a two year world-wide tour with James and Larry in duet.
In 2007, Scofield/Goldings/DeJohnette's Trio Beyond - Saudades (ECM) was
recognized with a Best Instrumental Jazz Album Grammy nomination for
their searing live recording at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall.
Goldings'
music graces the soundtracks of many film and television projects. He
contributed to the jazzy fabric of Clint Eastwood's Space Cowboys and
enhanced John Madden's Proof and Judd Apatow's Funny People with
original compositions, as well as providing ghoulish organ music for
"Lurch" to play in the animated film, The Addams Family. Goldings' Nino
Rota-inspired score to Jeff Garlin's Dealin' With Idiots is the backdrop
to this hilarious film about the zany parents of a Little League
baseball team. Listeners of NPR's This American Life can hear Goldings'
music underscoring many of its dramatic stories.
Larry scored the
Netflix series, Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker,
infusing the drama with shades of ragtime and early jazz, in combination
with modern, back-beat oriented cues, in which early jazz meets
hip-hop. The soundtrack has been released by Warner Bros. through

Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein & Bill Stewart • Toy Tunes
Review
The jazz world has seen many great organ trios over the years however Larry Golding’s trio with Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart is not only one of the most innovative but also one of the most prolific. Next week see’s the release of their 12th Album titled “Toy Tunes”, the second for their current label Pirouet Records.
Toy Tunes, is the follow up release to “Ramshackle Serenade” released in 2014 to critical acclaim, and once again see’s trio great form. The album contains a mix of original compositions mixed with treatments of a number of standards including “I’m In The Mood For Love”, Carla Bley’s “And Now the Queen” and the title track, Wayne Shorter’s “Toy Tune”.
Larry Goldings when speaking about the trio said “Our approach has never been dictated by the ‘organ trio’ format but rather by our individual personalities, our broad range of musical interests, our desire to be highly interactive, and to grow together as musicians.” This could not be further from the truth as the trio explore many styles on the album from the more straight ahead readings of “I’m In The Mood For Love” and closing track Calm to the abstract of Carla Bley’s “And Now the Queen”.
The Album opens with a Goldings original “Fagan” referencing Steely Dan’s co-leader Donald Fagan and introduces the album well. The track with is staccato motif and straight eight feel is a strong opener without giving to much away as to what is coming. Larry stated the the music of Donald Fagan “introduced me to a whole new world of harmony and song structure” and this can be heard in this track.
I especially liked the lilting 6/8 feel of Bernstein’s “Lullaby For B” that Peter wrote for his oldest son and back beat groove of Bill Stewart’s “Don’t Ever Call Me Again”. Highlight of the album in my mind is treatment of Wayne Shorter’s “Toy Tune’. While not deviating all that far from the original Shorter recording both Bernstien and Goldings lay down impressive solo’s. Goldings says that improvising on Wayne Shorter’s pieces “is akin to playing with a Rubik’s Cube” and if this is the case on this recording he certainly was able to get all the squares lined up.
The performances on the album are excellent throughout as is the recording quality. Toy Tune is not only a welcome addition to the trios discography but a welcome addition to any Hammond fan or for that matter jazz lovers in general.

Benjamin Koppel, Larry Goldings & Bill Stewart • Hammond Street
Hammond Street is a groovy and jazzy trio album, recorded in Los Angeles, USA in January 2006 by the Danish saxophone player Benjamin Koppel, the Hammond organ player Larry Goldings and the drummer Bill Stewart.
Hammond Street is the street where everything happens. It crosses Sunset Boulevard where the jet set cruise in their big American cars and the stars of Hollywood is out to be seen.
The great sound of the B3 Hammond organ is played by the sublime master of the instrument, Larry Goldings. He is known for his cooperation with among others John Scofield, James Taylor and Maceo Parker. In the 1950’s and the 1960’s Jimmy Smith began to play jazz on the B3 Hammond Organ and Larry Goldings has since then developed his very personal style of playing. His play is extrovert and has a modernistic style – inspired by both free jazz and funk music.
Benjamin Koppel has a very special relationship to the B3 Hammond Organ. His father, Anders Koppel (founding member of the beat and rock band Savage Rose), is a very talented organ player. Benjamin Koppel used to be with his father on tour, so he has been listening to the instrument from his early childhood. Benjamin Koppel is playing with several international jazz musicians and his compositions have been recorded by names like Daniel Humair and Phil Woods.
Goldings and Koppel are accompanied by Bill Stewart on drums. He is a true New Yorker with a great character who has played and recorded with names like John Scofield, Joe Lovano, Chris Potter, Pat Metheny.
Benjamin Koppel has composed the majority of the titles on Hammond Street. It is blues inspired jazz – swinging and grooving. The desert just outside the city of Los Angeles has been giving inspiration to the titles Ostrich Itch, that has themes from the west coast fusion, and Armadillo Race based on the afro jazz groove in 6/8. The titles lead the thoughts to the dusty desert, the car races across the American continent and the race for the specially trained armadilloes.

Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein, Bill Stewart • Perpetual Pendulum
The sense of movement in the album's title is really well-put – as organist Larry Goldings has this effortless way of running up and down the keys of his instrument, and the bass pedals too – spinning things out in a really freewheeling style that's caught fire by the guitar of Peter Bernstein and drums of Bill Stewart! There's a very modern vibe to the whole thing – the album's not a set that's out to rehash a 60s soul jazz mode, but instead show that new expressions from a guitar/organ trio are alive and well – maybe no surprise, given the strength that both Goldings and Bernstein have given us over the years – although brought into even greater focus here.
PERPETUAL PENDULUM is also their debut release on Smoke Sessions, which has some historical significance related to their origins as a trio. Smoke Jazz & Supper Club, the label’s parent venue, was opened on the former site of Augie’s Jazz Bar, where Goldings, Bernstein and Stewart first performed together and established their rapport on a regular Thursday night gig starting in 1989. They also recorded this album at New York’s Sear Sound Studio A, which is where they recorded their second outing together, 1992’s "Light Blue" and was also 30 years after the release of their debut album, Goldings’ 1991 album "The Intimacy of the Blues."
If it’s hard to imagine a band with the kind of longevity that Goldings, Bernstein, and Stewart share, it’s even more rare to find one maintaining their brilliant level of musicianship and chemistry and that is not lost on the trio.
“We all really dig each other, and that's probably the most important thing,” Goldings says in an attempt to explain the trio’s indefinable chemistry. There’s a lot of crossover in what we like to play and listen to, and our individual visions of jazz tend to align. It’s hard to say, because we never really discuss it; we just try to make good records. We came up together.”
Bernstein concurs. “I think we all share a pure feeling of gratitude. With these cats, I feel pressured to play my best because they’ve heard everything I can do. At the same time, I feel comfortable trying anything with them because I know whatever I do, they're going to hold it together. We’ve all grown through our individual experiences, but we always come back to this. And it's only getting better.”
"Like a long cool glass of water amid summer’s baking heat, what delight to come across something so simple, so good so damn right." (Jazzwise)
Larry Goldings
With his signature Hammond organ style and versatility on many keyboards, Boston native Larry Goldings (b. 1968) has traversed not only the wide spectrum of jazz where he is perhaps best known, but also the worlds of funk, pop, and alternative music. High in demand as a sideman, Goldings' sound can be heard on scores of albums by artists in virtually every musical genre.
In recent years, his distinctive playing has graced the albums of Christina Aguilera, Walter Becker, Solomon Burke, Tracy Chapman, De La Soul, Robben Ford, Steve Gadd, Melody Gardot, Herbie Hancock, Jesse Harris, Colin Hay, India.Arie, Al Jarreau, Norah Jones, John Mayer, Madeleine Peyroux, John Pizzarelli, David Sanborn, Sia, Luciana Souza, and many others.
Goldings has collaborated closely, on the road and in the studio, with such artists as Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny, Jim Hall, Maceo Parker, Madeleine Peyroux, John Scofield, and James Taylor. Taylor's retrospective album, One Man Band (Hear Music), represents the culmination of two and a half year worldwide tour, with Goldings as Mr. Taylor's sole collaborator/accompanist, or "one man band." The album, which was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), features an original composition by Larry entitled "School Song." As a leader, Larry has released 15 albums, many of which feature his long time organ trio with Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart. This group is widely recognized for charting new ground, with the musicians' synergistic playing and their hard-swinging, yet very thoughtful, music. In 2007, Larry (alongside John Scofield and Jack DeJonnette) received a Best Jazz Album Grammy nomination for their recording, Trio Beyond - Saudades (ECM).
In the past decade, Goldings has become increasingly known as a composer, arranger, and producer. Goldings' compositions have been recorded by Michael Brecker, Jack DeJohnette, Bob Dorough, Jim Hall, John Scofield, Toots Thielemans, Curtis Stigers, Jane Monheit, Gaby Moreno and Sia Furler, among others. His songs and arrangements also appear in the films Space Cowboys, Proof, and Funny People. Goldings is a featured performer in the 2009 Clint Eastwood documentary, The Dream's on Me, playing original arrangements of several classic Johnny Mercer tunes on piano and Hammond organ. Also sought out by the advertising world, Larry has written music for Amtrak, Time Warner Cable, and others.
Current projects include his recent album, When Larry Met Harry (Cafe Society Records), featuring sax great Harry Allen. In May, Goldings released a solo piano record, In My Room (BFM Jazz), exploring songs by Brian Wilson, Joni Mitchell, The Beatles, The Zombies, Stephen Foster, Abdullah Ibrahim and others. It also includes new compositions, and prepared piano improvisations.
Peter Bernstein
born 1967, New York City has been a part of the jazz scene in New York and abroad since 1989. During that time he has participated in over 80 recordings and numerous festival, concert and club performances with musicians from all generations. As a leader, Peter has released nine albums and a DVD, Live at Smoke.
He got his first break while attending the New School when he met the legendary guitarist Jim Hall. Hall asked Peter to participate in his Invitational Concert as part of the 1990 JVC Jazz Festival. The event featured such guitarists as John Scofield and Pat Metheny and was release as Live at Town Hall Vol. 2. by Music Masters. Hall noted that Peter “…has paid attention to the past as well as the future. He is the most impressive guitarist I’ve heard. He plays the best of them all for swing, logic, feel and taste.”
Also in 1990, Peter Bernstein was discovered by alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson and took part in the first of four recordings with him. He was a regular member of his group throughout the 1990s. “Some people just have it.” Donaldson said. “…most of the time you have to teach someone what to do, but Peter knows it all.”
Peter has also enjoyed long musical associations with legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb (Cobb’s Mob), as well as organist Larry Goldings and drummer Bill Stewart as a member of their highly acclaimed trio. The New York Times called them “the best organ trio of the last decade”. Together they recorded a dozen of records, all of which display their distinctive sound, whether exploring the depths of jazz standards or playing their original compositions.
From 1995 through 1997, Peter was a member of Joshua Redman’s band and played on Redman’s Freedom in the Groove CD. He played with Diana Krall’s quartet from 1999 through 2001 and with Dr. Lonnie Smith, the legendary organist who made his debut on the George Benson Cookbook albums. He has also recorded five CDs with organist Melvin Rhyne, known for his association with Wes Montgomery. In addition, Peter has appeared in groups led by Nicholas Payton, Sonny Rollins, Lee Konitz, Tom Harrell, and Eric Alexander.
Current projects include his recent album, Monk, recorded for the newly reactivated Xanadu label. Together with Doug Weiss and Bill Stewart, he put their own spin on the rich legacy of Thelonious Monk.
In September, Bernstein released a solo guitar record, Solo Guitar – Live at Smalls (Smalls Live), an intimate recording that makes you feel like you’re sitting in the front row at Small’s jazz club in New York City.
Bill Stewart
William Harris “Bill” Stewart was born on October 18, 1966 in Des Moines, Iowa. Bill Stewart’s father was a trombonist and a big fan of Bill Harris, an acclaimed jazz trombonist from the 1940s and 1950s jazz scene. His love for Bill Harris’ work was such that he named Bill Stewart after him, as a tribute.
Bill Stewart’s first exposure to music came from listening to his parents’ collection of jazz and rhythm and blues (R&B) records. Listening to records was the most effective way of getting exposed to different styles of music, since Iowa was a relatively isolated state. Live jazz concerts, for instance, were very rare in that area of the United States.
Bill Stewart began playing drums at the age of 7. He taught himself how to play drums by playing along to records at his house. Therefore, Bill Stewart didn’t get the most traditional of drumming educations in jazz. In fact, Bill Stewart learned jazz drumming using matched grip, a grip that’s mostly associated with rock drumming and the one he prefers using till this day. Drum lessons, drum books, and drum rudiments was something he would get into later on.
Bill Stewart continued developing his drumming skills in high school by performing in its orchestra and in a top 40 cover band. He also furthered his studies in jazz by going to the Stanford Jazz Workshop in California, a summer music camp where he was lucky enough to meet jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie.
After successfully graduating from high school, Bill Stewart enrolled at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. There, Bill Stewart played in the orchestra and in the jazz and marching bands. Bill Stewart wound up transferring to the William Paterson University in New Jersey, where he enrolled in its Jazz Studies and Performance program. During his stint there, Bill Stewart performed in ensembles directed by Rufus Reid, took composition lessons from Dave Samuels, and studied drums under Eliot Zigmund and Horacee Arnold. John Riley and Ed Blackwell – legendary jazz drummers – gave him some drum lessons in college as well, when subbing for Eliot Zigmund. Joe Lovano was another musician that subbed for Eliot Zigmund. He would latter join Bill Stewart in many of his musical endeavors.
Bill Stewart made his recording debut in 1987, while still in college, by contributing drums for Scott Kreitzer’s Kick’n Off. However, the album would only see the light of day in 1992. After graduating in 1988, Bill Stewart moved to Brooklyn, New York. He began establishing his reputation as a musician by appearing regularly at jam sessions that took place in New York. Word of mouth and his constant performances at jazz clubs helped him secure his first gigs, which were with pianist Larry Goldings and guitarist Peter Bernstein. At one of their regular concerts at Augie’s Club in Manhattan, Bill Stewart was invited by former James Brown and Parliament-Funkadelic saxophonist Maceo Parker, who was at attendance, to take part in the recording sessions for his album Roots Revisited (1991).
Shortly thereafter, Bill Stewart was invited to join John Scofield’s quartet, with saxophonist Joe Lovano and either Dennis Irwin or Marc Johnson on the double bass. This was one of Bill Stewart’s first regularly touring bands. After that band, Bill Stewart wound up performing for various other bands John Scofield put together.
