Ray Draper Quintet • Tuba Sounds

 

 

Review from All About Jazz (by Derek Taylor): The tunes on the date are a well-chosen mix of originals with a single standard thrown in as a nod to tradition. Draper’s potbellied horn is surprisingly agile on the changes, particularly on his own numbers “Jackie’s Dolly” and “Mimi’s Interlude.” Plump and viscous, it’s a sound that skates along the bedrock of the bass register while still managing to fire off quick salvos of notes. Young stays fairly understated, but still chimes in occasionally with fine solos, as on the latter composition and some intriguing exchanges, as on the opening “Terry Anne.” McLean’s devilish alto, brimming with youthful bravado, routinely dances rings around the leader’s fleshy figures. Resena de All About Jazz (por Derek Taylor): Los temas de esta sesion presentan una mezcla bien elegida de composiciones originales con un unico standard incluido como reconocimiento a la tradicion. La tuba de Draper resulta sorprendentemente agil sobre los cambios, particularmente en sus propios temas “Jackie's Dolly” y “Mimi's Interlude”. Su sonido es pleno y viscoso, deslizandose sobre los cimientos del registro grave mientras lanza rapidas rafagas de notas. Young se mantiene bastante contenido, aunque interviene ocasionalmente con buenos solos, como en esta ultima composicion, y con algunos intercambios interesantes, como en el tema inicial “Terry Anne”. El saxo alto de McLean, lleno de impetu juvenil, suele superar con soltura las figuras de Draper. La seccion ritmica normalmente se limita a su funcion habitual, aunque Waldron encuentra espacio para un tema y varios pasajes de solo.
