Turk Murphy's San Francisco Jazz Band • Let The Good Times Roll

Review by Scott Yanow
Trombonist Turk Murphy's lone recording for RCA would also be his band's last studio album until 1972. The addition of cornetist Ernie Carson to the sextet (which at the time also included clarinetist Bob Helm, pianist Pete Clute, Bob Short on tuba, and, surprisingly, Frank Capp on drums) gave the group a powerful soloist. Pat Yankee takes vocals on five of the 11 numbers (including a vocal duet apiece with Turk Murphy and Ernie Carson), and overall, this is a pretty satisfying and well-rounded LP. Highlights include "Struttin' With Some Barbecue," and an unusual version of "Bilbao Song" which has Clute switching to calliope, "Tiger Rag," and "Wild Man Blues." Worth a search by Dixieland fans.
