Hampton Hawes • Blues For Walls

For a few years (mostly 1972-74), pianist Hampton Hawes spent time exploring electric keyboards. His music became funkier and less distinctive, but his recordings from the era (which are mostly out of print) are certainly quite listenable, if a bit dated in places. This Prestige LP, which has not yet been reissued on CD, finds Hawes teamed with trumpeter Oscar Brashear, the reeds of Hadley Caliman, guitarist George Walker, bassist Henry Franklin and drummer Ndugu Chancler for performances of seven of the keyboardist's interesting (if not overly memorable) originals.
