Louis Armstrong • In Scandinavia, Vol. 3

Review by Ken Dryden
The third volume in a series of compilations of concerts by Louis Armstrong from his tours of Scandinavia features the jazz legend on three separate occasions. The first continues from the second volume, with Trummy Young, Edmond Hall, Billy Kyle, Arvell Shaw, Barrett Deems, and a vocal feature for Velma Middleton. The bandmembers are in great spirits on tunes they likely played thousands of times, so there are few surprises in this portion of the disc or the middle tracks that were recorded just a few days later. The final set, from a 1959 concert, substitutes Peanuts Hucko (clarinet), Mort Herbert (bass), and Danny Barcelona (drums). A third complete rendition of Armstrong's theme song, "When It's Sleepy Time Down South," opens the show, seguing immediately into a lively take of "Indiana" (which was also a staple in the trumpeter's repertoire). The leader's humorous vocals come across best in the less frequently heard "I Get Ideas," though he doesn't make its lyrics overly lecherous. The medley of two pop songs, "Tenderly" and "You'll Never Walk Alone," is also a bit off the beaten path for a typical Armstrong set. The sound quality is excellent, and while little new ground is covered, the high level of musicianship makes it worth acquiring.
