Louis Armstrong • In Scandinavia, Vol. 2

Review by Scott Yanow
This set of previously unreleased music features Louis Armstrong & His All-Stars at concerts in Stockholm and Copenhagen, twice in 1952 and once in 1955. Unlike many of his American appearances during the 1950s, these performances have a generous amount of surprises as Armstrong gets away from some of his set solos and sounds inspired. Best are the first nine numbers, which are from the 1952 Stockholm concert. "New Orleans Function" has its humorous moments, "Muskrat Ramble" features a different Armstrong solo than expected, and Velma Middleton's singing on "Big Daddy Blues" is joined by some superior ensemble playing. Trombonist Trummy Young and clarinetist Bob McCracken co-star on the 1952 numbers (which include fine versions of "On the Sunny Side of the Street" and "High Society" from the Copenhagen concert), while McCracken is succeeded by Edmond Hall on the six tunes from the 1955 concert. The recording quality is excellent and Louis Armstrong is heard throughout in exuberant form. Recommended.

Recomendado.
