Barney Kessel • Soaring

Although guitarist Barney Kessel interprets seven standard ballads on this CD reissue (a trio set with bassist Monty Budwig and drummer Jake Hanna), this is not a ballad album. Most of the songs are taken at faster than usual tempoes with the emphasis on Kessel's chordal (rather than single-note) solos. The guitarist was in peak form around this era as can be heard on a romping version of "I Love You," "Star Eyes," "Like Someone in Love" and "Get Out of Town." In addition he contributes one of his finest originals, "Seagull," a song that deserves to be revived. This underrated set is well worth exploring.

Aunque el guitarrista Barney Kessel interpreta siete baladas estándar en esta reedición de CD (un trío con el bajista Monty Budwig y el baterista Jake Hanna), este no es un álbum de baladas. La mayoría de las canciones son tomadas a un ritmo más rápido de lo habitual, con el énfasis en los solos de acordes de Kessel (en lugar de los de una sola nota). El guitarrista estaba en plena forma en esta época, como se puede escuchar en una versión de "I Love You", "Star Eyes", "Like Someone in Love" y "Get Out of Town". Además, aporta uno de sus mejores originales, "Gaviota", una canción que merece ser revivida. Este conjunto subestimado bien vale la pena explorar.
