Muddy Waters Featuring Dizzy Gillespie • Muddy Waters Blues Band

Review by AllMusic
Muddy Waters was the man who electrified the blues--bringing the sound of the Mississippi delta to the mean streets of Chicago and giving it bite and kick with electricity, volume and a strong backbeat. This recording was made in the late 1960s or early '70s, and it's a fine slice of live performance by Muddy and one of his regular touring bands. Also included here on two songs is the unlikely guest star jazz trumpet legend Dizzy Gillespie. The recording quality is a bit spotty--do not expect super-perfect sound--and the band hits an occasional clinker, but this album is valuable as an example of how Muddy Waters and band really sounded live in front of an appreciative crowd. Waters is in fine voice, the band plays like the night and the harmonica playing (by Jerry Portnoy) is so sharp you could get yourself cut. A good deal at the price, for old fans of Muddy and as an intro to the Chicago blues style.
