The Harmónica Rascals was the lirst and most popular of the Vaudeville harmónica bands. Formed in 1927 after harmónica salesman Borrah Minevitch met fourteen year oíd Johnnv Puleo, The Harmónica Rascals blended slapstick comedy with a large har¬mónica band sound. Minevitch built his band's image around a newsboy/ragmuffin motif vvith Puleo, a harmónica player midget, as the core of the act. Minevitch liad him play the poly- phonia, the largest harmónica available at the time, simply because il looked funny.

The group went on to become one of Vaudeville's biggcst attrac- tions, grossing over $3,000 per week, although ihe players, most of them teenagers, vvere paid only a pittance for their vvork. The group became so popular that Minevitch was able to opérate three different Harmónica Rascals groups: west coast, midvvest and east coast, each vvith their ovvn harmónica playing midget. They also appeared in several movies during the 1930's and 40's.
During the many decades that the group was together it featured hundreds of players, including: Borrah Minevitch, Johnny

Puleo, Leo Diamond, Mike Chimes, Pete Pedersen, Ray Tankersley, Jerry Murad, Ernie Morris, Don Les, Cari Ford, Sammy Ross, Abe Diamond, Irvin Crane, Mal Leighton, Hugh McCaskey, Fuzzy Feldman, Alex Novelle, Eddy Manson, Ix*o Friedman, Richard Bain, Bill Walden, Dave Doucette, Richard Hayman, George Fields, Lou Delin, George Ross, Don Henry, Al Furbish and many others. most of whom vvent on to success- ful careers in music.
The Harmónica Rascals remained under the control of Borrah Minevitch until his death in 1955. The ñame was taken over by Paul Barón, who started his own Harmónica Rascals band and by Borrah's daughter, Lydia Minevitch, whose versión of the band lasted only a short time.
