Cultural fusion has become a franchise of the postmodern world, but Uwe Schmidt has a more amusing proposal: cultural confusion. A German citizen who has lived in Chile since 1996, Schmidt has maintained a career as a musician and producer on a global scale from Santiago, and is the man behind Señor Coconut, the name under which he has recorded songs from sources as diverse as heavy rock or the electronic sounds of Kraftwerk transformed into salsa, merengue, mambo, cha cha cha or wawancó.
"For Fiesta songs I wanted another step. And I actually recorded musicians in Denmark and learned a lot there too, because I talked to them, I sang the things I wanted, like "Smoke on the water" (the hit by the rock band Deep Purple) and pom pom pom, and they looked at me and played and I came home with thousands of parts and shots all over the place. And what we set up was like a patchwork between recordings and the computer.
Listening to Deep Purple's classic piece, "Smoke on the Water" in cha-cha-chá and sung in Spanish, is an absolute nonsense that nevertheless turns out to be a great recreation. The Doors' merengue "Riders on the Storm" is another unparalleled adventure, while Sade's "Smooth Operator" as a mambo or Michael Jackson's "Beat it" as a merengue, round out another album that is hard to ignore.
Mr. Coconut is one of the strangest products of Western cultural hybridization. Those rockers who can't dance can start here, no problem.
