Super Trombone are an all-star septet with four veteran trombonists (Jim Pugh, Conrad Herwig, Dave Bargeron, and Dave Taylor), playing arrangements by David Matthews. Though multiple-trombone small groups are somewhat of a rarity, the musicianship of this band, backed by a strong rhythm section (pianist Bill Mays, bassist Chip Jackson, and drummer Lewis Nash), keeps things lively throughout this 2004 session. Except for one original by Matthews, the songs come from the repertoire of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, and Erskine Hawkins, though the performances are anything but small-group re-creations of the original recordings. With great solos and ensembles throughout the date, trombone fans will enjoy this session, though the total time (46 minutes) of the CD seems more like that of an LP.
