Pete Oxley and Nicolas Meier have already stretched the confines of the jazz-guitar duet by their broad world-musical interests and exotic range of instruments – as they memorably revealed on last year’s Chasing Tales album. Half of this typically melodious two-album set revisits that duo format, with bass and drums added on the second disc. The pair’s favourite sources – Pat Methenyesque songs, Hot Club swing, Latin cool, Turkish music – are prominent again, with Indian influences also present in the sitar-like swerves of fretless instruments, alongside synth guitars mimicking brass, and rugged rockers with mediterranean melodies that spawn clamorous improv on Meier’s oud-like glissentar guitar. One of the few unequivocally jazzy tracks, the hip and slinky Purple Panther, lets Oxley and Meier play fewer notes and let the swing groove do the work, opening spaces that this genially busy set could have used a shade more of.

Pete Oxley y Nicolas Meier ya han ampliado los límites del dúo de jazz-guitarra gracias a sus amplios intereses musicales y a su exótica gama de instrumentos, como revelaron de forma memorable en el álbum Chasing Tales del año pasado. La mitad de este conjunto de dos álbumes, típicamente melodioso, retoma ese formato de dúo, con el bajo y la batería añadidos en el segundo disco. Las fuentes favoritas de la pareja - canciones de Pat Methenyesque, el swing del Hot Club, el cool latino, la música turca - son prominentes de nuevo, con influencias indias también presentes en los giros de los instrumentos sin trastes como el sitar, junto con las guitarras de sintetizador que imitan el latón, y los rockeros robustos con melodías mediterráneas que engendran una improvisación clamorosa en la guitarra glissentar de Meier. Uno de los pocos temas inequívocamente jazzísticos, el hip y slinky Purple Panther, permite a Oxley y Meier tocar menos notas y dejar que el groove del swing haga el trabajo, abriendo espacios que este conjunto genialmente ocupado podría haber utilizado un poco más.
