Naseer Shamma, an Iraqi musician and renowned Oud player, was born in 1963 in Kut, Iraq — a city on the Tigris River — and graduated from the Institute of Music Studies in Baghdad in 1987. He has since attained a PhD in Musical Philosophy.
Shamma began studying the oud at the age of 12 in Baghdad, following in the footsteps of Jamil Bashir and Munir Bashir — two of Iraq's most celebrated masters of the instrument. In the 1980s, the Iraqi government accused Shamma of criticizing Saddam Hussein. He was lured to the Iraqi embassy in Amman and forcibly taken back to Iraq, where he was imprisoned. He fled Iraq definitively in 1993. From 1993 to 1998, he taught oud at the Tunisian Higher Institute of Music in Tunis. In 1998, he was invited to Cairo to realize his dream of establishing an institute specifically dedicated to training soloists on the oud.
In 1999 he established the Arab Oud House in Cairo. Also in 1999, Shamma established the nine-person instrumental ensemble Uyun (Eyes), based upon the model of the Arab takht — a small ensemble typically including one player each of ud, qanun, nay, and percussion. Shamma is renowned for his commitment to peace, especially by targeting youth during his musical performances.
