Eric Alexander • The Real Thing

The saxophonist Eric Alexander has found an almost infallible formula that has led him to be one of the most outstanding saxophonists of his generation when it comes to the more classical jazz tradition. The recipe is summarized in the '4 Bs': blues, ballads, bosses and boppers.

With that alchemy well mixed in the choice of songs to play, Eric Alexander has achieved, once again, that his new album 'The real thing' has an attractive sound, where the best past of jazz is alive and present. And no, it doesn't sound old, quite the contrary; many of those jazzmen who call themselves modern would like it to sound like this musician and his band.

His band. One of the best things this saxophonist has achieved is to create a band, a stable formation that they have been playing together for many years. And that shows; the filling, the cleaning of the sound, the interpretative freedom, the swing that they distill. With him are his friend, teacher and mentor Harold Mabern, drummer Joe Farnsworth and double bassist John Webber, and on this album they have been joined by guitarist Pat Martino, another of the important names in Alexander's training and subsequent career.

The most bopper part of the album is in a formidable 'The Night Has A Thousand Eyes' and 'For George and Trane', where the saxophone gives free rein to its more coltrenian side; the look to the bossa is in the charming 'Little boat', a theme of Roberto Menescal; The blues is in the version of 'Summertime', with a great Pat Martino, and the ballads have their representation in 'Sleep Warm', and as Harold Marben was always a very muscular pianist for the end have left 'The Chief'.

Yes, if you like jazz well played, clean, nice, brilliant, then this is, by far, your record.
