Joseph Tawadros is Australia's flamboyant virtuoso of the oud, a North African and Middle Eastern lute and ancestor of the guitar. Currently living in London and playing on the world stage he is a four-time Aria Award winner and recipient of the Member of the Order of Australia award in 2016. His output in recording and live performance is prolific. It's impossible to listen to any of his albums or go to a concert and not be impressed by his musicianship as a composer, improviser and his command of this thrilling instrument. Those of us who have followed his career trajectory have become acquainted with his unmatched technical prowess. To date much of his output has been brimming with youthful high energy and extraordinarily virtuosic playing with occasional forays into a more contemplative exploration of an inner voice. Betrayal of a Sacred Sunflower, his 17th album in 16 years, is a major departure in which virtually the entire album is serene, meditative and transcendental.
The first time I listened to Betrayal of a Sacred Sunflower I was literally transported to a place where time stood still. I lost awareness of the material world and was completely subsumed by the music. This is a rare experience reserved for only the most sublime music of the spirit. Tawadros, reflecting on this new release wrote "For this album I wanted to explore silences. It's about restraint, surrounding myself with artists that know more about space than I do, exploring where I could go in that context." The contribution of the other players is subtle and unobtrusive. Tawadros has been able to convey his vision and the supporting musicians have played very sparsely creating as much space as sound. They are all restrained to the point of being almost transparent rather than inaudible. Special mention goes to James Tawadros who always knows exactly what, if any, percussion is required.
One wouldn't necessarily think that trombone would be part of this kind of serene soundscape but with a player of the calibre of James Greening, the trombone becomes a mesmerising and gentle voice in conversation with the oud. Ever So Still in which the piano plays arpeggios and the oud improvises in a style reminiscent of an Indian sitar is wonderful. The Sun Still Shines is a stand out track in which all the instruments contribute a beautiful statement of hope. Nevertheless this album is very much an expression of Tawadros and his oud. Many tracks are oud solos with occasional whispers from the other players. There are one or two higher energy departures among the 16 tracks. The aptly named On The Flipside has the oud, trombone, violin, guitar and percussion in joyous, jazzy mode. This is fun but I would have been satisfied with an entire album of the sublime and contemplative. The production on Betrayal of a Sacred Sunflower complements the artistic vision perfectly.
I'm very glad that Joseph Tawadros has given us this album. It's one of my favourite Tawadros releases and will be on my play-list when I need some respite and time to go inward. It has a mystical and transportive quality that is a balm in an increasingly crazy world.

Tawadros, reflexionando sobre este nuevo lanzamiento, escribio: "Para este album queria explorar los silencios. Se trata de la contencion, de rodearme de artistas que saben mas sobre el espacio que yo, explorando hasta donde podria llegar en ese contexto." La contribucion de los demas musicos es sutil y discreta. Tawadros ha podido transmitir su vision y los musicos de apoyo han tocado de manera muy escasa, creando tanto espacio como sonido. Todos estan contenidos hasta el punto de ser casi transparentes en lugar de inaudibles. Una mencion especial merece James Tawadros, quien siempre sabe exactamente que percusion se requiere, si es que se requiere alguna.
No se pensaria necesariamente que el trombon formaria parte de este tipo de paisaje sonoro sereno, pero con un musico de la talla de James Greening, el trombon se convierte en una voz hipnotica y suave en conversacion con el oud. Ever So Still, en el que el piano toca arpegios y el oud improvisa en un estilo que recuerda a un sitar indio, es maravilloso. The Sun Still Shines es un tema destacado en el que todos los instrumentos contribuyen con una hermosa declaracion de esperanza. Sin embargo, este album es en gran medida una expresion de Tawadros y su oud. Muchos temas son solos de oud con susurros ocasionales de los demas musicos.
