Jim Hall • San Francisco 1986

 

 

A consummate jazz guitarist, Hall's live albums (like "Jim Hall Live!", and "Vol. 2-4" from the same gig as "Live", and "Jim Hall in Tokyo" with the same rhythm section as "Live") have a different quality from his studio recordings. There was a certain subtle excitement, a bit more of an exploratory feel in his playing — nothing over the top, just a willingness to slightly expand his playing on both originals and standards. And this set from 1986 at the American Music Hall in S.F. (with his working rhythm section) is another example of how good Hall was in concert. The trio is Hall-guitar, Steve LaSpina-bass, and Akira Tana-drums. Listening to these three musicians you can hear why it was Hall's working trio at the time. Their intuitive playing is outstanding.

Every tune here has something to recommend it. Things like "With A Song In My Heart", "All The Things You Are", "Chelsea Bridge", from Disc 1 are just some of the highlights. Disc 2 has good things like "I Should Care", "Blue Monk>Hide & Seek", "Bottlenose Blues", and the theme from "MASH" — which isn't a pander to the audience — far from it. This arrangement is another real high point from this gig. There's also an unlisted tune at the end of Disc 2 titled "Aruba", which the trio played after the last listed track, "Waltz (reprise)".

The sound is very good/excellent. The discs snap into trays inside the tri-fold cardboard package which also has a slot for the booklet. The two page booklet has a two panel essay on Hall plus a b&w photo of the trio and one of Hall with his guitar I remember from his "Live!" album.

Speaking of good live Jim Hall, if you're a fan of Hall you already are familiar with the "Jim Hall Live !" album, and hopefully the additional set "Vol. 2-4" which is more from the "Live !" gig. Hopefully that set will be reissued in the future as it was available for a relatively short time. I first really heard Hall when he was with Jimmy Guiffre in the '50s, and was taken aback by his fine playing. Live Hall was always a bit better to my ears than his studio albums — he was a bit more exploratory in his playing, and this 2 CD set is yet another great example of his live work. Jim Hall fans gets this. If his name is new to you check out the live albums mentioned above plus the album with Bill Evans Undercurrent, plus other good examples of his studio recordings.

Un consumado guitarrista de jazz, los álbumes en directo de Hall (como "Jim Hall Live!", y "Vol. 2-4" del mismo concierto que "Live", y "Jim Hall in Tokyo" con la misma sección rítmica que "Live") tienen una calidad diferente a sus grabaciones de estudio. Había un cierto entusiasmo sutil, un poco más de sensación exploratoria en su forma de tocar - nada exagerado, sólo una voluntad de ampliar ligeramente su forma de tocar tanto en los originales como en los estándares. Y este set de 1986 en el American Music Hall de S.F. (con su sección rítmica de trabajo) es otro ejemplo de lo bueno que era Hall en concierto. El trío está formado por Hall-guitarra, Steve LaSpina-bajo y Akira Tana-batería. Escuchando a estos tres músicos se puede entender por qué era el trío de trabajo de Hall en aquella época. Su forma de tocar intuitiva es extraordinaria.

Cada melodía aquí tiene algo que recomendar. Cosas como "With A Song In My Heart", "All The Things You Are", "Chelsea Bridge", del disco 1 son sólo algunas de las más destacadas. El disco 2 tiene cosas buenas como "I Should Care", "Blue Monk>Hide & Seek", "Bottlenose Blues", y el tema de "MASH", que no es una alabanza al público, ni mucho menos. Este arreglo es otro de los puntos fuertes de este concierto. Al final del disco 2 hay un tema que no figura en la lista, titulado "Aruba", que el trío tocó después del último tema de la lista, "Waltz (reprise)".

El sonido es muy bueno/excelente. Los discos encajan en bandejas dentro del paquete de cartón tríptico que también tiene una ranura para el folleto. El folleto de dos páginas tiene un ensayo de dos paneles sobre Hall, además de una foto en blanco y negro del trío y una de Hall con su guitarra que recuerdo de su álbum "Live!".

Hablando de un buen Jim Hall en vivo, si eres un fan de Hall ya estás familiarizado con el álbum "Jim Hall Live !", y con suerte el set adicional "Vol. 2-4" que es más del concierto "Live !". Esperemos que ese conjunto se reedite en el futuro, ya que estuvo disponible durante un tiempo relativamente corto. La primera vez que escuché a Hall fue cuando estaba con Jimmy Guiffre en los años 50, y me sorprendió su forma de tocar. Para mí, Hall en vivo siempre fue mejor que sus álbumes de estudio, ya que era un poco más explorador en su forma de tocar, y este conjunto de 2 CD es otro gran ejemplo de su trabajo en vivo. Los fans de Jim Hall tienen esto.
