 It may not be cutting-edgeaa but this debut release from Tricotism – featuring established jazz hands Craig Milverton (piano) and Nigel Price (guitar) and comparative newbie Sandy Suchodolski (bass) – is full of melodic and improvisational sparkle, proving there's life in the old tradition yet. Milverton has long had a thing about Oscar Peterson – what self-respecting jazz pianist doesn't? – and this new trio is very much modelled on the Canadian's classic drummerless trio. Four of the tunes they perform are drawn from the Peterson compositional catalogue – ‘Sushi’, ‘Place St. Henri’, ‘Wheatland’ and ‘When Summer Comes’. The output of other mid-century keyboard modernists also features: Bud Powell's ‘Webb City’ and Thelonious Monk's ‘Eronel’ allows space for Price in particular to spread out; Billy Strayhorn's ‘Isfahan’ provides an opportunity for an extended display of delightfully evocative romanticism. The title track, an intricate fast blues that demands, as its title suggests, a good deal of its interpreters' digits, is the only original and brings the set to a rousing conclusion.

Puede que no sea vanguardistaaa, pero este primer disco de Tricotism, en el que participan los veteranos del jazz Craig Milverton (piano) y Nigel Price (guitarra) y el debutante Sandy Suchodolski (bajo), está lleno de chispa melódica y de improvisación, demostrando que todavía hay vida en la vieja tradición. A Milverton le gusta Oscar Peterson desde hace mucho tiempo -¿a qué pianista de jazz que se precie no le gusta? - y este nuevo trío sigue el modelo del clásico trío sin batería del canadiense. Cuatro de los temas que interpretan proceden del catálogo compositivo de Peterson: "Sushi", "Place St. Henri", "Wheatland" y "When Summer Comes". La producción de otros modernistas del teclado de mediados de siglo también está presente: Webb City', de Bud Powell, y 'Eronel', de Thelonious Monk, dejan espacio para que Price en particular se explaye; 'Isfahan', de Billy Strayhorn, brinda la oportunidad de un extenso despliegue de romanticismo deliciosamente evocador. El tema que da título al disco, un intrincado blues rápido que exige, como sugiere su título, una buena parte de los dígitos de sus intérpretes, es el único original y lleva el conjunto a una conclusión entusiasta.
