Perez-Patitucci-Blade • Children Of The Light

In the same way that there are big game and small game, there are also major and minor jazz trios. The one formed by the Panamanian pianist Danilo Pérez, the double bassist John Patitucci and the drummer Brian Blade, capital pieces of the legendary Wayne Shorter quartet, is one of the biggest and his first album ‘Children of the Light’ shows this.

The jazz presented by this trio is of that serious, tough, introspective, deep, a jazz that is not available to all fans, but that if you get caught you attend a music that does not want to be superficial or like at the first audition. This is jazz, music, that the listener has to work on.

'Children of the Light’ is a tribute, a thank you to the music and the person of Wayne Shorter. Perez says that when he gave Shorter a copy he told him: 'This is for you, Doctor. This is our gift. This is our look of love, affection and gratitude for all the lessons’' Maybe that's why all the music performed here has one idea in mind: to go more from music.

The eleven songs of the CD are all original pieces by the band members (seven by Pérez, three by Patitucci and one by Blade), although not necessarily intended for this work, since, for example, ‘Dolores’ one of Shorter's most emblematic pieces is included.

There are two recurring themes in the compositions of this album; children ('Milky Way’, 'Sunburn and Mosquito' (dedicated to Carolina)‘ and, above all, light (’Moonlight on Congo Square,‘ ’Lumen,‘ ’Looking for Light‘ and ’Light Echo/Dolores'), which provoke very different textures and colors in each piece.

In 'Children of the Light’ there is jazz that wants to go beyond jazz itself.
