Goodman grabó muchas sesiones de calidad dispar en especial para la radio. Normalmente aparecía él como solista y la banda detrás o, como mucho, Christian o Hampton. Es una música obsoleta que suena dispersa y aburrida. ¿Por qué? Aparte del estilo, Goodman, lo mismo que otros, como Cab Calloway, odiaban grabar. Interpretaban que eso beneficiaba a las discográficas, pues sabían que ellos percibían poco o nada de los royalties. Así que se dedicaban a tocar realmente bien sólo cuando hacían bolos en directo. Cuando acudían al estudio sonaban bien, pero mecánicos. No le echaban ganas.
ReplyDeleteHubo una sesión cuyos Eps fueron muy demandados en la que la orquesta de Goodman se salió del guión y tocó como lo hacían cara al público. La sesión es ahora difícil de encontrar, pero que explica por qué su formación y no, por ejemplo, las de Ellington o Basie era la banda a batir. En esa sesión la orquesta de Goodman suena más conjuntada y más compacta que cualquier otra.
