Gerry Mulligan & Chet Baker • Where It Starts It Ends

Gerry Mulligan, who was primarily known as a saxophonist, but was an expert exponent of clarinet and piano as well as being a highly-respected arranger, was one of the giants of post-war modern jazz and was one of the leading lights in the cool jazz movement focused on the West Coast.

In 1952 he began a legendary collaboration with the young lyrical trumpeter Chet Baker, newly-arrived on the jazz scene after an Army career, with the primary era of their professional relationship ending in 1953 when Mulligan was jailed on narcotics charges.

Baker's melodic style fit well with Mulligan's, leading them to create improvised contrapuntal textures free from the rigid confines of a piano-enforced chordal structure. This great set comprises some of the best recordings they made together during this time as part of Gerry Mulligans quartet.

After the first sessions, which involved pianist Jimmy Rowles, Mulligan developed an innovative piano-less line-up, using bass and drums to make up the quartets, with the pairings being Bobby Whitlock (bass) and and Chico Hamilton (drums), and Carson Smith (bass) and Larry Bunker (drums).

It offers fascinating insights into the the way Mulligan and Baker developed an intuitive rapport, and an absorbing collection of landmark modern jazz performances.

  1. 15 of the disc's 19 cuts come from this Pacific Jazz reissue, covering material recorded in 1952 and '53. (So it's misleading that they put a photo from the '80s on the cover.) Credits can be found here, with pianist Jimmy Rowles showing up on the extra tracks: https://www.discogs.com/release/15985488-Mulligan-Baker-The-Best-Of-The-Gerry-Mulligan-Quartet-With-Chet-Baker?srsltid=AfmBOorTEgFqPyR2sRTJklyzb4RyfFWyHJhEKPkMTrK1NZ6_rEcRq8AT
