Cal Tjader ‎• Several Shades of Jade

One of the most unique albums of Cal Tjader's career, 1963's Several Shades of Jade is a collaboration with composer and arranger Lalo Schifrin that transposes the vibraphonist's musical travels from Latin America to the Far East. This is no more traditional Asian music than Tjader's similar albums from this period are traditional Latin American music, but the pair wisely avoids the standard clichés of Asian music (no smashing gongs after every musical phrase or melodies that sound like rejects from The Mikado). Instead, Schifrin frames Tjader's meditative vibraphone solos in arrangements that strike a cool balance between western kitsch and eastern exotica, never tipping too far in either direction. Although the follow-up album, Breeze From the East, is rightfully panned by just about everyone whose idea of Asian music doesn't begin and end with the Vapors' "Turning Japanese," Several Shades of Jade is actually an interesting experiment that succeeds more often than it fails.

Uno de los álbumes más singulares de la carrera de Cal Tjader, Varios Shades of Jade de 1963 es una colaboración con el compositor y arreglista Lalo Schifrin que transpone los viajes musicales del vibrafonista desde América Latina hasta el Lejano Oriente. Esto no es más música tradicional asiática que los álbumes similares de Tjader de este período son la música tradicional latinoamericana, pero la pareja sabiamente evita los clichés estándar de la música asiática (no se rompen gongs después de cada frase musical o melodía que suena como un rechazo de The Mikado). En cambio, Schifrin enmarca los solos de vibráfono meditativos de Tjader en arreglos que logran un equilibrio fresco entre el kitsch occidental y la exótica oriental, y nunca se inclinan demasiado en ninguna de las direcciones. A pesar de que el álbum de seguimiento, Breeze From the East, está justamente enmarcado por casi todos aquellos cuya idea de la música asiática no comienza ni termina con "Turning Japanese" de Vapors, "Varios tonos de jade" es en realidad un experimento interesante que tiene éxito más a menudo de lo que falla.
