Review by Scott Yanow
The packaging of this CD is a little confusing. Although John Graas gets first billing, he is actually only on the first three selections (taken from Jazz Lab, Vol. 2). Of the remaining ten numbers, five are by Graas but he does not play a single note. Those selections were originally issued under bassist Paul Chambers' name for Vee Jay but have long been obscure, being reissued on a Xanadu LP and in England by Affinity. There are individual features for Jack Montrose ("There Will Never Be Another You"), Bill Perkins ("The Song Is Ended") and Paul Moer ("Neat Foot") plus a previously unreleased bass-drums duet by Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones ("I'm Confessin' That I Love You"). The other seven selections are by a quintet with all of the musicians other than Graas. In any case, the music is well-played, cool-toned bop and gives one an opportunity to hear a variety of underrated musicians from the 1950s. This set is worth exploring. Just don't expect many French horn solos!

Hay temas individuales de Jack Montrose ("There Will Never Be Another You"), Bill Perkins ("The Song Is Ended") y Paul Moer ("Neat Foot"), además de un dúo inédito de bajo y batería de Paul Chambers y Philly Joe Jones ("I'm Confessin' That I Love You").
