If
it was possible to directly sublimate lucid dreams into sound, it isn't
hard to imagine the results coming out somewhat like this. Music is
made to simulate that kind of loose natural flow of thoughts often
enough, but it's more rare for it to capture the experience as directly
and vividly as Portico Quartet do on their sixth full-length. Memory
Streams isn't just suggestive of memories flowing and shifting, it feels
like a fleeting, mysterious, wash-through-your-mind dream in itself.
The
sonic palette is familiar to those who have been following the band
since their defining shift toward jazztronica on their eponymous album
(Real World, 2012): ethereal saxophone (live and looped), equally
mercurial synthesizer swirls, the vaguely otherworldly resonant tone of
the steel hang drum, skittering rhythms built on an organic blend of
drumming and programming. It's a natural continuation from the landmark
Art in the Age of Automation (Gondwana, 2017) and its counterpart
AITAOA#2 (Gondwana, 2018) that continues stretching and tweaking the
template in subtle minimalist ways. Jazz and ambient, analogue and
digital, strings and console knobs—in Portico's hands, they're all
complementary ingredients rather than dichotomies.
The result on
Memory Streams has the feel of a sort of immersive cocoon washed by a
beautiful understated light show, relaxing as a cabana and mysterious as
outer space. With "Ways of Seeing" the group floats on lively rhythmic
shuffling; "Memory Palace" reprises a previous track's motif for a
thoughtful sax-garnished piano interlude, while the highlight "Offset"
turns to chill-dub as the hang and sax hypnotically flit through the
ether. The quartet sounds more comfortable and effortlessly interlocked
than ever, even as the complex interplay stays sharp and their
soundscape continually expands. The mental and musical stream is a
practically limitless one, wide, deep and endlessly fascinating.

difícil imaginar que el resultado fuera algo parecido a esto. La música
se hace para simular ese tipo de flujo natural de pensamientos con
bastante frecuencia, pero es más raro que capture la experiencia tan
directa y vívidamente como lo hace Portico Quartet en su sexto álbum.
Memory Streams no sólo sugiere recuerdos que fluyen y cambian, sino que
se siente como un sueño fugaz y misterioso que atraviesa tu mente.
La
paleta sonora es familiar para aquellos que han estado siguiendo a la
banda desde su cambio definitorio hacia la jazztrónica en su álbum
homónimo (Real World, 2012): saxofón etéreo (en vivo y en bucle),
remolinos de sintetizador igualmente mercuriales, el tono vagamente
resonante de otro mundo del tambor de acero colgante, ritmos deslizantes
construidos sobre una mezcla orgánica de batería y programación. Es una
continuación natural del emblemático Art in the Age of Automation
(Gondwana, 2017) y de su homólogo AITAOA#2 (Gondwana, 2018) que sigue
estirando y retocando la plantilla de forma sutilmente minimalista. El
jazz y el ambiente, lo analógico y lo digital, las cuerdas y las
perillas de la consola, en manos de Portico, son ingredientes
complementarios en lugar de dicotomías.
El resultado de Memory
Streams es una especie de capullo inmersivo bañado por un bello y
discreto espectáculo de luces, relajante como una cabaña y misterioso
como el espacio exterior. Con "Ways of Seeing", el grupo flota sobre un
animado barajar rítmico; "Memory Palace" retoma el motivo de un tema
anterior para un reflexivo interludio de piano adornado con saxo,
mientras que el punto culminante, "Offset", se convierte en chill-dub
mientras el hang y el saxo revolotean hipnóticamente por el éter. El
cuarteto suena más cómodo y entrelazado sin esfuerzo que nunca, incluso
cuando la compleja interacción se mantiene afilada y su paisaje sonoro
se expande continuamente. La corriente mental y musical es prácticamente
ilimitada, amplia, profunda e infinitamente fascinante.
