Empezó a estudiar piano muy pronto y alternaba esos estudios con los del contrabajo y el vibráfono. En 1940 su familia se trasladó a Pittsburgh y siete años mas tarde, en 1947, ya actuaba delante del publico, cosa que alternaba con sus estudios de teoría junto a su hermano.

A la muerte de su madre, se trasladó a Los Ángeles y allí comenzó a tocar con Wardell Grey, Teddy Edwards y Harold Land. Meses mas tarde su destino fue San Francisco, donde entró a formar parte de un grupo dirigido por el contrabajista, Oscar Petifford. Entre 1953 y 1956, formó parte del grupo del clarinetista, Buddy de Franco sustituyendo a Kenny Drew. En 1954, tuvo la oportunidad de viajar a Europa en esa formación y cuando concluyó el contrato con Buddy de Franco, firmó con los "Lighthouse All Stars" que dirigía el contrabajista, Woward Rumsey y en 1957 llegó a New York como pianista de la cantante Dinah Washington.
