Empezó a estudiar piano muy pronto y alternaba esos estudios con los del contrabajo y el vibráfono. En 1940 su familia se trasladó a Pittsburgh y siete años mas tarde, en 1947, ya actuaba delante del publico, cosa que alternaba con sus estudios de teoría junto a su hermano.
A la muerte de su madre, se trasladó a Los Ángeles y allí comenzó a tocar con Wardell Grey, Teddy Edwards y Harold Land. Meses mas tarde su destino fue San Francisco, donde entró a formar parte de un grupo dirigido por el contrabajista, Oscar Petifford. Entre 1953 y 1956, formó parte del grupo del clarinetista, Buddy de Franco sustituyendo a Kenny Drew. En 1954, tuvo la oportunidad de viajar a Europa en esa formación y cuando concluyó el contrato con Buddy de Franco, firmó con los "Lighthouse All Stars" que dirigía el contrabajista, Woward Rumsey y en 1957 llegó a New York como pianista de la cantante Dinah Washington. Grabó un disco con el saxo barítono, Serge Chaloff para el sello Blue Note, y a a raíz de esta colaboración pasó a ser un músico permanente de dicho sello que lo contrató en nómina como sideman.
El resultado fueron seis discos a su nombre y teniendo como compañeros de grabación a lo mas granado del hardbop de la época como: Hank Mobley, Art Farmer, John Coltrane o Paul Chambers, y una larga serie de grabaciones al lado de Sonny Rollins, Curtis Fuller, Johnny Griffin, o Dexter Gordon entre otros. Victima, como muchos otros músicos de los estupefacientes, su actividad se tuvo que ver interrumpida al ser ingresado en 1963, en un Hospital de New York con una gran infección pulmonar. Dado momentáneamente de alta, pocos días después murió victima de un infarto cuando aun no había cumplido los 32 años.
